Thankyou jshponie.
Not to worry, the thread is still going. I've been busy covering the plane and just haven't posted any pics lately.
Got just about all the parts covered with solartex.
Also glassed the cowl and doing the primer work on it.

I flew my DVII with a Saito 2.20 FS, about the same as a G38. Plenty of power, if you are not looking for a 3D bird. I flew along side a DVII with a DL 50 in it and they flew just about the same. Its a big and somewhat draggy ( is that a real word?) airframe. You will love this bird with the 38 in it. Jeff

Jeff, has this just happened in the last couple days?
Was admiring your plane as posted above just a day or two ago, and now its parts..sure hate to see it happen...
Just out of curiousity, what did you collide with?

No, the inside of the wings look like a bomb went off inside. A lot of tooth picks in there. The leading edge is in about a thousand shards. Its just a mess. I could save about a dozen ribs from the bottom wing, and about the same from the top. But even most of them are split at some point. But hey...its winter here, I gotta have something to do.

The more I look at the wheels that Balsa USA calls 1/4 scale, the more I think they are too small. On my first build, I used the standard 7 inch WWI wheels that most people do, and I think a scale size should be around 8 1/2 or 9 inches. Am I looking at it wrong? Or is that just the size that is correct and I should get over it? Oh well, the new build starts. The research on how to piant it starts all over again. WHEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!

Managed to get alittle time in this weekend. With deer season and the holidays here, it's tough to get some build time in.
Got the side cowl panels cut and fit with the access doors scribed in. The door size, types and placement varies between the time and where the plane was manufactured. Carefull when using the plans as a template. The split between the panels should be between the top and bottom cabane mounts. Not exactly as shown.
Before I finished covering the horizontal stab, I added some 3/16" sq. bracing in the frame work. (See pic) The reason for this is if someone holds the plane back or if you stand in front of it and rev up the engine, you wont crack a joint loose as the leading edge of the stabilizer can flex quite a bit. I had that happen on my DR-I. It doesn't add hardly any weight and really strengthens it up.
Not sure what the full scale wheel size is. I'll have to do some research on that.

100% new. I just could not put humpty dumpty together again. About the doors on the cowls. I found that a lot of planes were modified in the field as to where and how many doors were on the cowls. So I was not to worried about getting them perfect. But if you are doing a plane that has a few good photos, that always helps. I like the modifacation to the tail. I never had any problems with the stock set up, but I was always thinking about the strength when I was starting the motor. I am thinking about something in red this time.......but factory green is always nice too.

The rebuild so far is just the wheels re-painted and new guns done. I have to wait until friday for the new kit I think I will do the same aircraft this time but I will try to get it correct this time. I read on RCU somewhere about a person that used white and black shoe polish mixed to stain or dye his wheels white. Were Fokker tires white? Boy, the things you need to know... and I know that there are a few non scale things on a DVII from balsa. The wings are flat bottom, The struts are not right, the rudder is too big (?), the cock pit is not wide enough. Have I missed any? Even with all that, I still love this bird.

Most Balsa USA planes were not designed to be "100% Scale". They are designed to build easily and fly well at an affordable price.
They do have alot of potential to be modified or close to scale looking. It all depends on how far the builder wants to take it.
A far as the white tires, "most" of the black & white pics I see in the books show black tires. I think either would be correct though.

If you want a real treat, get the strut material from GTM. I replaced all of my struts this last winter, and they look awesome. A little more work, but it was worth it.
Also, the great thing about the BUSA DVII is the outline is pretty accurate. I have been getting almost perfect scores in outline at Scale Masters qualifiers.
