You need to lower the incidence of your top wing. It should be around zero. All you have to do is shim the rear strut. an 1/8th inch shim will equal 1 degree. This is a tip from Dick Petit and I was fortunate to do this before my maiden. The down trim was not an issue for me and mine still handels well through all throttle settings without a lot of trim change.
Congrats on the maiden. Always a nervous situation.

Thanks Vertical,
I'll get out the incidence meter when I get it back on the bench for the shake and rattle inspection. Always a good idea after the first flight to make sure nothing is coming loose.
Haven't heard from JB lately. You still with us there buddy?

Warbirds man,
Great first flight! Your planes looks fantastic. The only thing I could have wished for was to be there. Thanks for getting video. Next best thing to being there!
Well you and JeffEE beat me to the maiden flight. Guess I should just hang up my tools for now. :-)
That video sure shows the elevator at level flight. That shows me a ton. Thanks so much.
How much fun was the flight? Did you do any manovurs? Loop or a roll maybe?
How much weight did you need to add for balance? Did you balance right at the doc's of Balsa USA?

Warbird Man,
Was that you with the "Northern Aces Show Team" on the back of your shirt?
I watch your video of your landing a bunch. I see what my plane will look like. I just hope my final product is as nice as yours.
Great flight and landing. Looks like not even ground to land on. However you did a great job! Building and flying!

Thanks Michael,
Ya, that was my good side you saw there.
The field we were flying off of is abit rough for R/C. Nice spot out in the country though.
As you can see in the video I came in abit hot and the ground kinda snuck up on me. But I did bounce over a ditch!
With the elevator trim being abit off (not excesively) I only did a few laps around the field with a DR-I. I did do a big beautiful loop and it tracked very well.
Added about 2-1/4lbs. to balance at listed C.G.
Even though it was a short flight, Out of all the 1/4 scale WWI BUSA planes I've built and flown thus far, I'd say this one definetly flies the best. Nice and stable.
I'm sure yours will too

Warbird Man; Still hanging around, finally got Fritz in the pilot's seat! Still haven't fired her up but will soon I hope. Will take her out for some photos to post also. The heat here has been the pits and no rain in sight to speak of. Trying to find someone to make the lettering for the wingtips and such, any ideas? Called Proctor and he has lost his source for his graphics, 1/4 scale Fokkers anyway. Glad to hear your maiden went ok!

Warbird Man; Yeah, I'll ck with Michael on the vinyl lettering, maybe he would make us a set , I'd be more than happy to pay for them. Seems to me that would be a good business to get in if you had the right equipment and were computer savy, which I'm not! Found a spot to park my bird over the entry way, wings will have to go on the wall in the sunroom though.

JB. First item, nice build on the DVII. Second item, It looks good on the wall. Third item, My wife was walking by the computer when I was looking at your photo, and said " Don't even think about it!" Let us know how the first flight goes, and be ready to add down trim.

She is pretty understanding Warbird Man, she was even going to let me hang it from the ceiling all together, even bought the pulleys , cleat and rope, still might some day but I've gotta take it apart to get it out of the house anyway. I'll keep you all posted on her maiden flight, can't wait to see her in the sky! Thought I'd try to add a little more realism to the stock engine, adding some 2-56 nuts to the cylinder heads and may add some pushrods and valve springs.

I know that we build our planes for our own inner pride or whatever, but at the field this Saturday, after a flight, one of the other pilots at the field came up to me and said " Man that really looks great up there, nice flight." That made my day. I knew it flew nice, but to have others notice was pretty neat. I told him thanks and there was a chance to see some REALLY nice looking DVII's at Fond Du Lac this year.

Yes JeffEE,
You have a very nice Fokker D.VII. Your friend pilot is also correct it does look great in the air. I really wish we lived closer. We could fly formation all the time!

RE: BUSA D-VII BUILD @ EAA 2010
So I was at the flying field getting ready to put in another flight. Transmitter is on, flip the receiver on and....nothing. The servos all gave the standard small bump when the switch was pulled, but then it just sits there. Shut everything off and start all over. Same thing. Shut it all down and a friend came over and I showed him the problem I was having, except that this time everything works just like it should. I am really new to 2.4 and he said that sometimes they just don't bind. Well that's sort of strange. It was the 3rd flight that day, battery was well above 5.5 volts. TX battery was at 10.7 so that was not the problem. I did a range check and it was good. There were no other systems turned on at the time. Any answers other than 2.4 just does that sometimes? Is it safe to fly it or does it need to be re-bound?

Iv'e had similar situations. I doubt anything is wrong but if your new to 2.4 , One needs to understand how 2.4 works. I don't mean to be a "know it all" but this is what I have found with spektrum/JR.
1- When you turn on your TX it hunts for 2 open frequencies. Sometimes it can take up to 10 seconds. If you turn on your RX before it locks in the 2, it won't connect to your plane. I always wait a few seconds before turning on the plane.
2- If your TX is too close to your RX it won't connect. Keep your TX a few feet away from the plane when turning it on.
3- If your still having trouble, re-bind the plane to the TX.
4- If your RX voltage drops low enough you can lose the bind. Can be a problem if using digital servos as they draw more power than analog servos.

so it went well for the most part. I got the same problem of not binding again, until put a few feet inbetween the TX and Rx. Then the hook up went perfect. I got in two very nice flights and then dinged the prop trying to start it for another. No spare prop so its done for the day. All in all a good day. Thanks for the information.

Oh, one other thing for you people with the black planes. Just a word of caution. Take along some shade from the sun. I had mine out for a few hours this morning and it was only about 82 here. But that top wing of mine (all black) was toasty! If we get together, I have an EZ-up. And you are welcome to park under the shade with me. Then while you are away, I get to claim them all as mine. lol
