1/5 Scale Top Flite P51
Greetings,
I am preparing to build the 1/5 Scale TF P51. My question is....If you had to rebuild the plane what engine would you use? My initial thoughts on equipment/set up is as follows:
G-62 engine w/ C&H Inignition, HiTec 5645MG for aileron, rudder, and elevator, HiTec 5485 for flaps, retracts and throttle, and sierra retracts.
Regarding the G-62, I'm certain this will power the bird just fine but I'm wondering if another engine would require less cowl modification? Not so much concerned about price...I want adequate power, reliability and scale appearance.
Thank you,
Brian

I've seen them fly very well with a 50cc. I know of one that flies good with a US Engines 41cc.
If I were building one now, I would consider a US 41 because I have one and that is what the
prototype model was flown with. If you have a G-62 on hand by all means use it, you can always
throttle back (or so I am told).

Take a hard look at either the da50 or the dle55. You can get mufflers that don't require much cowl cutting for these engines from jtec.
But if you stay with the g62 you can get a mount for the g62 carb from Vogelsang so the carb doesn't stick out through the cowl. Jtec may also make a mffler for the g62.
If you look at the jtec site and don't find these mufflers call them - they make them to order for some engines.

I love the G-62, have several of them. One powering a Byron P-51. I'm just finishing up a TF P-51 with a Revolution 52/Keleo exhaust but there were problems with cooling. Haven't run it yet so I'm keeping my fingers crossed. If you want to minimize cuts then maybe a DA-50 or DLE-55. I've seen several TF P-51 ARFs with a DA-50 and they really move along. You'll still need to make a fairly large opening on the bottom for cooling. If I had to do it again I would go with either the DA-50 or DLE-55.

Hi Mike...thank you for the info. I'll look into US 41. I don't have the G-62, I have a friend who has one in the same plane but before I went ahead with that engine thought I would get some feedback & suggestions.

Hi Ed...thank you for responding. The funny thing is that I had a friend buy me a DLE 55 at the show this spring but he wanted to buy it back so he could use it this season. I'll probaby get going on this plane when the weather turns up north so I sold it to him. I've have read an aweful lot of good things about the DLE engines and if that will require less cowl work maybe it's a better choice. Brian

Don't overlook the Moki 2.10 or twin cylinder. They are narrow, and you should be able to completely cowl it in. Lot's of power there. I'm poutting the 2.1 in my Yellow Aircraft P-47. 4.95 Horsepower.

I am running the DA50 with the slimline pitts and a menz 20-12 prop. The combo works great. I like the rear carb setup in a warbird. but I wish they would come out with a rear exhaust engine so you could hide the muffler.

So you might look into this muffler if you want one that helps you hide most of the muffler.
Of course if you get the Keleo muffler it hides very well for about $250.

If someone wants the arc version Tower Hobbies has one in their scratch and dent for a reduced price ("very slight damage-missing decals" for $280). And if you join their super saver club for $10 you can get a further price reduction of $50 (I think it applies to scratch and dent- I know it applies to regualr priced planes).

I have two TFGS P51's and they both have Moki 210's in them and nothing sticking out of the cowling except the wrap around pits and just a little.Tom

The US engines 41 is a dog. Use the Zenoah g-62. Cut back some of the cooling fins in front of the exhaust, instead of the cowl so the engine will fit the cowl (no lack of cooling doing this). I've got 5 seasons and 650 flights on my TF mustang with this setup...in two words, it works. It also works well with less cowl on the bottom removed for cooling. The g-62 using 91 octane, 80 to 1 AMS oil, and an APC 22X10 prop, using several ground radars and one airborne radar, my stang flies at 115-125mph.

If you're not on a tight budget, consider the DA 60 (lots of power, low weight) so you can swing a scale prop and finish scale look with Keleo exhaust.
I used to have a Moki 210 in the same plane, decent power but not enough for unlimited vertical like the second mustang with DA 50 and Keleo exhaust.
If you are on a budget, PM me and I will sell you my Moki 210 with exhaust, mount for $150. Might throw in the prop for it if I can find it.

Hello,
I Recomend The DA-50 With Keleo Scale Exhaust System . Recomend Reniforcing The Firewall To Handle The " Higher Torque " ....
