Mustang comparative evaluations..battle of the owners?
Hey all,
I am looking to buy a P-51 arf, 60 size. I am looking for input as to whether the way to go is Top Flite Gold P51 or H9 Mustang Blue nose.
Maybe there is also something out there comparative I haven't seen?
Looking to go 4 stroke, with retracts...
your input would be great
Thanks guys, happy flying...
Joe

I've got the Top Flight. Tried to build light with .91 OS FS. Put the battery back, just in front of the tail wheel to get it to balance. Used Robart 700RS air up spring down retracts with 7/16 in robart struts. Came out at 9.5 lbs. Flies great, like it is own rails. Handling on take off and landing is easy for a warbird. The .91 is plenty of power. Not unlimited vertical, but plenty of scale like flying. Only mod was angling the gear forward slightly. Two guys at the club have the Hanger 9 Blue Nose. They have had lots of problems. They rarely fly. Mines a regular with over 50 flights on her since April.

Give the World Models P-51 a look. Builds light, looks good.
And i know it flys great.
I have the H9 Mustang too, flys great as well, just about 2 lbs heavier than the WM. Flys more like a warbird flys, than a sport plane.
Mine came in at a svelt 10lbs and 9oz without fuel. Saito 125 in the nose.

I do not own a Hangar 9 blue nose, but I have heard many people say they are a handful and have stability problems especially when landing.
I Have owned a few other Hangar 9 birds and every one has been built rather flimsy, I have a friend that has owned a couple too. and he got rid of them rather quick
too. both planes broke in half when he landed them just a bit too hard, any other plane would have been fine. but on both planes the fuses broke in half just behind the wing!
I have never seen that happen on any other manufactured plane.
Do not get me wrong I am not bashing on Hangar 9 at all, I am just stating the problems I have had and that I have seen with some of their planes. Again with the blue nose
mustang I am going by what many have said.
With that said, I have owned a few Top flite planes and they have flow excellent and are built very well, with very little needed to reinforce the planes.
So i would have to say go with the Top Flite unless you want a handful.

Thanks for the input. I have been following the bluenose thread, but some say it flies just like a warbird, which is OK with me, but given the overall opinion, seems the Top-flite is just all together a better solution.
Any opinions on the Century retracts for this, or built up from robarts would be better?

A friend has C/Js on his Top Flite ARF and except for a weard clicking noise every time it touches ground they seem to work fine. I have LADOs with Robart struts on mine and have had no probs at all.

If you want a nice P-51 you might also consider the Sig P-51B. It the same size and has flaps too. It comes with a nice spinner and flies great. It's very fast, but slows well with flaps deployed.
I have seen a bunch of issues with the Top Flight P-51s. Most of them were balanced with the CG where they recommend and been tail heavy by a bunch, so if you get one make sure you start with the CG way forward of what they recommend.

Ive owned a few Mustangs over the years small to large and depends whats more important to you when shopping for one. Iam a huge scale fan and this is my priority so the ones that I would be looking a little closer at as well as the ones already mentioned would be the ESM or KMP offerings as well, more 1.20 size but will fly much better due to lower wing loading...

My old TFGE kit built P-51 gave up the ghost. I have the O.S. 1.08 2 stroke, radio and retracts out of her. I am going to buy a "Hurry Home Honey" and install the 1.08 and retracts in her. I plan to give her a new radio. Considering the lighter weight of the ARF, she will be a rocket on rails! Here is a video of my old P-51: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XolyGD5EFY8

At the risk of starting a feeding frenzy...
I was just in Tower's 'scratch & dent' section, and I saw a TF P-51D ARF (60-size) for $210. No damaged stated, and all that's missing is the stock retracts, which many choose to toss away anyway preferring robarts. Pretty good deal! You probably could stack a tower code on top for an even better deal. If I didn't already own 4 or 5 rc mustangs, I would've bught for sure.

I'm re doing mine. How does the monocoat flat olive drab match what is on the arf covering. I read somewhere that it didn't but can't find it. I am doing a "B" conversion. So fuse is mostly olive.

I still have the old Hangar 9 and it is rock solid in every way. It's also now almost 7 years old, and still flies like it's on rails. Never did have any problems with the gear except the threads on the servo shaft and horn going bad about 4 years ago, but a little JB weld fixed that. Can't say much about the blue nose. I like the scheme, but haven't flown it. I like my old one too much.
No matter which one you go with I'd go with the OS 120 pumper for power and a 15X7 3 blade.

RE: Mustang comparative evaluations..battle of the owners?
I've had the World Models Mustang P-51 60 ( Blue nose). It was a great flyer. The landing gear seamed stiff and you could hear the
harder landing through the fuselage. Overall, it flew great and handled good on the ground.
I've bought a older H9 Mustang P-51 (Marie edition) used. The original buyer installed Robart air retracts and struts. The radio gear is mostly
installed. I hope to have the engine repaired and installed by the weekend so I can do some taxi runs and maybe a first flight.
I also have a NIB Top Flite Mustang P-51 (60 size). I hope to have it ready for our local Warbird event next year. I hope to have
some scale details installed by then as well.

The Top Flite flies great. I can do the basic pattern sequence with ease. It slow and point rolls just like a pattern plane. The airframe is VERY strong, the gear mounts, are typical ARF, weak, but not terrible. I mine has been radar'd at 110 mph with a YS 120. WAY too fast, but its fun.
