Very nice! The tail wheel did not retract anyway. It was supposed to, but malfunctioned. I did not even bother putting the retract mechanism in mine.

tail retract never was never functioning in the full size? I thought I saw a pic with the tail retracted but maybe it was a D9.

I do not have a pic of a full scale flying, and I have a lot of books. It is documented though that it did not function. German aircraft are known for having tail wheel retract issues throughout the war. Even the ME 109

Vertical Grimmace is correct. The full-size 152 suffered from defective retracting tailwheels all their (shortish) life. I cannot give specific references at the moment, but I have been researching the 152/190 in depth since c1974....... HTH :-)

So the guys fixed the tail issues, now you can fix the spark plug by just banking the plane a little bit when they take pics, so you don't see it in the picture... plus it always looks kewl seeing some of the top wing.

David Andersen notes in his construction article RCM November 1997, that this particular publication speaks about the tail wheel issue. This info may be necessary for anyone entering a TA 152 in competition.

http://www.goodreads.com/book/show/2...ke-wulf-ta-152

As far as the spark plug wire goes, It may bother some, but again from a competition side of things, parts of the engine such as this have to be ignored by the judges.

I found the following info on the tail wheel retraction problems in "Focke-Wulf Ta 152 The Story of the Luftwaffe's Late-War, High-Altitude Fighter" by Dietmar Harmann; ISBN 0-7643-0860-2.

In a report from front line unit III/JG 301 it is mentioned that there are problems with retracting the tail wheel. The cause is unkown, but the load on the hydraulics could be to high. Also, the rollers on the retracting mechanism were jumping out of the tracks.

i highly doubt the load on the hydraulics was the problem, this would of been accounted for in the design of the hyd. System.

But, the way the tailwheel retraction cable on the Ta-152 is done would be very problematic if any twisting if the roller was encountered or the tracks were incorrectly spaced which would allow the roller to pop out.

The Jg301 account was fairly early in the 152's service life snd no other commention is made about tailwheel retraction issues, so it is possible it could have been fixed. Honestly, their are more questions than answers when it comes to many late way German aircraft, which allows us to do what we expect based on known documents.

Early in the service life? The duration was what, 2 months? How many units operated the TA 152? 2 maybe.

True that. I had planned to make mine functional, but did not want to deal with any reliability issues from the Sierra unit I have. Well, I guess it would have still been scale!

I'd like to make mine functional since it looks much the part and the rest of the arguments are debatable.
The problem is the Sierra air cylinder is too short and if you mount it in the scale position, it doesn't even retract half way.
The solution will be when we design a truly scale tail retract (I'm working on 100% scale mains in 1/5scale at the moment). If I can find a longer cylinder to replace the stock Sierra, it may work.

Ive got a 1:1 drawing of the fullscale main gear struts and scissors already that can be scaled to any size necessary. Im actually going to be placing the order to my machinist for my 1/4 scale struts mid to late april. If you want, i can resize my drawings for 1/5 and get a quote on them for you.

Check McMaster Carr for Bimba cylinders. They have a ton of different sizes.

Thomas,

thanks for the offer, I wished we I had known before but I have been working on this quite a while. All the parts are now being CNCed by a friend in WA and a wing mock up will be built to try the retrofit process. The correct pintle angle and rake is built in and will bolt to the main spar.

The down lock parts are for the A and D models though not for the 152 and will be driven by a linear servo.

VG, I will try Carr see what they have.

Finally I was able to shrink the video and post (I hope). Third flight March 2015, still pretty shy about flying the new airplane!
Some changes were made on set up after the first few flights, reduce the rate and expo to 40%. Also increase the aileron differential from neutral to 20º up 15º down.

Hopefully better quality videos will come later.
