OK, I got ahead of the build just so you guys could see more of the actual airplane rather than waiting on me to post another thread. Another plus is that I am on vacation this week so I will be able to keep it going for the next eight days without missing an addition...I thought you would like that : ) So, here it goes with the first pic and a note of which plane I bought and how I plane on finishing. I found this pic on the net and it looked similar to the Hanger 9 but looked close to the finish of my camo

Sorry about the 90 rotation on the last pic, anyway the beasty DA50 is going into the sharks mouth! I chose the Jtec muffler over the Slimline because the canister is smaller thus presenting less of an air block behind the cooling fins...TarHeel Hal has the slimline muffler on a DA50 and the engine could be getting a little hotter as a result. Im going to hold my final judgement until its a little cooler, we have been running some high temps this summer.

I chose to screw the gear wells in place so I could get to the air hoses and servos extensions if needed. I reinforced the wood at the screw points and used some RC56 on the screw threads to resist vibration. RC56 is great thread lock on metal to wood contact. The screws in the belly pan were put there only to help hold it in place while the E6000 cured. The belly pan was a real pain to fit!!

The wing mounting dowels have to be measured and drilled with a plastic wing shaped piece provided in the kit. Farmer passed me an idea which I had used on another arf to use an 18" long drill bit. I taped the wing into place after measuring and centering then drilled through the firewall, wing saddle, and into the wing leading edge, simple as that! The drill bits may be purchased in a package of three sizes for 8 bucks!!!!! They have two different packages each having 3 bits of different sizes...I bought both packs.

Wing saddle side, the wing pins fit perfectly with no adjustments or slop I also added a silicon layer to the wing saddle. This is an old trick to reduce vibration between the wing and the fuselage and helps to keep the wing from sliding around in the saddle when you are putting the plane together.

Here is the finished wing. Sierra gear, they are the best! I had to notch the wing tube spar so retract cylinders would fit...another tip I got from Farmers build. If you get this model you need to look at farmers build. He did a great job and had a lot of little tips that can really help along the way. Anyway, the folks at Skyshark said it wont be a problem

Nice build , a couple questions /comments
1)did you see some of the post /builds on reinforceing the wing dowels ? some of the guys insisted on cutting into the wing as the leading edge was a concern at the dowl incertion point .
2)general questions how do you like the kit in general ? is the wing sheeted ? I was look at getting this plane but debating over this plane because its sweet and a great price or hold out and shell out a lot more for the new Top Flight P40

yeah, good point. the dowels supplied were only 1/4 inch and the wood in the leading edge is balsa! the fix can be done before the wing halves are glued together, just glue some nice ply blocks on the leading edge by going through the wing root ribs, there are some nice lightening holes that you can easily work through. after the wings are glued together just tape the wing into place and drill through the firewall with a 5/8 drill from harbor freight, install the 5/8 dowels and the job fits perfect.

As far as the kit goes I really like it. The wing is well built, sheeted, then covered with solartex and painted. the fuse is fiberglass and well reinforced then painted as well. Top Flite P40 is probably a great product as is the P47 which I have but if you want options on the finish the skyshark is the way to go.

sweet excellant work !!!
I did not know the wings were 100% sheeted that is a deal maker for me . I always thought they were simply an open rib surface .
One thing about this plane -it been proven to fly really well , so that is always good news .
great job on the tail , so your not going with the Flying Tigers scheme , any reveal yet on what your picking ?

thanks for the comments LDM, yeah I found a photo of a full scale that would be perfect for this camo color and decided on that instead of the flying tiger, which was the original idea. Anyway, this scheme is going well and I think it will be one I wont see often, as promised heres the horizontal stab and ele.

Next I installed the rudder/steering servo...i raised it because I plan on opening the cockpit to a full body pilot and the original servo tray will be the cockpit floor I also found a loose bulkhead just behind the area where the wing bolts go in so I epoxied and clamped that as well

n8622T, hey just so you know, this skyshark p40 likes to be nose heavy for stable flight and landings. Like 45 degree down nose heavy at factory cg. This plane is elevator sensitive and will snap on approach if balanced at factory cg. So please don't. Flew my first one approx five years till it just got too battle damaged and ugly. Building my second one right now with Pearl Harbor (new movie) scheme, no sharks mouth ! Great flying plane but with a few ground handling habits. Will post pics of new one soon. Yours lookin' great! Paul

I've been eyein this one from a distance, out of curiosity. Where does the plane balance when level. Had a shop disaster with my P47 that may not be recovereable, so I'm looking for a quick build to take to warbirds over texas 2011. Got a G62 to stick in it. Would robart 150 rotators work for retracts?
