89" Dynaflite PT-19 scratch build..

RE: 89
Yes, rides were beng offered at $85.00 for 15 minutes, and lower per minute up to $270.00 for an hour, I think. I was trying to get some details for a scale RC bird, and hope I captured some of interest for others as well. I wish I had been better prepared with more battery life, but,...
In past years there have been an AT-6 and also a BT-13. It was interesting to compare the two sitting next to each on the apron. I have flown a full scale AT-6 and want to replicate the plane I flew in an RC plane. I have both Chipmunk and PT-19 RC planes (still to be completed) and an AT-6 is next. I have the actual pilots flight manual for the AT-6 if any one is interested in a copy of select pages. I will try to find the AT-6 and BT-13 pictures and post them. I also have a lot of detail pics on the J3 Cub of which I am flying a quarter scale model.
I try to get to all local fly-ins and capture on film subjects of possible future RC projects. So little time, and so many airplanes of interest.
Regards,
Richard

I by mistake deleted the pictures I took while covering the fuselage, darn it !!,, So I well post the before and after photos with explanation of how I did it..
The first picture shows the fuselage primed and ready for paint,, I well paint the unit after attaching the fabric ( this well also help the fabric adhesion to the fuselage) As I started to cover the open sides with 21st Century silver fabric the big problem - #1 was trying to get the fabric to stick even on the shaped wing fillet it was near imposible!,, I took some 3/16" sq. balsa strip and ca it along the top of the fillet, this was not sufficient either to help anchor the fabric,, the final fix was to take some 1/16" balsa sheet and cut it out to fill the area- (this area being the length of the fillet from the leading edge to the rear of it), the 1/16" sheeting was thin ca gluedafter it was fitted in to fill the length of the open area on the top of the fillet up to the first of the two side fuselage stringers.
Note this 1/16" aheeting was placed slightly recessed below the surface of the fillet and the stringer, this alowed me to have a surface behind the fabric to work against with a hot iron, after I finished with the iron I used a hot blower to draw the fabric tight, this well cause the fabric from the 1/16" sheeted area to lift from it so now the sheeting well not show through the fabric.
Now the fabric can be trimmed along the top of the fillet with about 3/8" overlap to the fillet tops. I now cut some 3/8" wide strips of styrene plastic and apply some ca+ to it and stick it at the seam where the fabric ends, I do the same at the top seam along the cockpit are, as a scale detail and also to keep the fabric from working loose.. I have drilled pilot holes and ran some #4 x 3/8" sheet metal screws in every couple inches on the strip, the fabric at the front overlaps about 1/2", I am not worried about the seam on the top behind the cockpit to the tail, this area does not get handled that much and I do not see it as a problem comming off.. If you look close you can see the 1/16" tape used as other seam detials and syrenge applied canopy glue for fasteners,, now everything was spray painted.

I am working on the cowl now from Fiberglass Specialties for the PT-19, cutting it out, adding panel lined and fastner details,, painting it silver with Behr paint and Rustoleum on the black part.... I have yet not decided on going with a small Quadra or a SPE 43 electronic ignition engine.

Looking great! I have a DYnaflite kit for the PT-19 that I traded a built model for to a buddy. I have the robostruts and a fiberglass canopy, and will be powering mine with a G-23. I plan to do somewhat scale cockpits, and the idea of glassing the metal areas on the fuse is great! Thanks for the tip! I am also going to add split flaps, and wing fillets for a more scale appearance. I bought the photo pack from Bob Banka for the Chilean Air Force PT-19, which is silver, orange, and insignia blue. It's a different color scheme, and like stated above, will set my model apart from the arf's! Keep up the good work, I hope to maybe get mine going this winter.

I am working on the mechanical a bit on the PT-19,,, on the first picture I have a - Quadra 35 - mounted,,, I have been looking for a good @@ US-41 or a good Quadra 42 to use since theyall have same mounting pattern.. ( anyone have a good one they want to sell cheap for this project? give me a shout ).... I could not find either so for now I am installing a SPE 43, I should get the slimfit pitts muffler from J-Tec next week and see if it well fit in the narrow cowl... I took a stock G-62 mounting plate and drilled for the SPE to fit,,, than I am going to use the 4 inside holes to attach it to the firewall,,, that way if I get a q42 or a US 41 I still havegood mounting hioles on the firewall for it. Notice the heavy duty blocks to hold the cowl screws, nothing more irratating than a cowl that works loose all the time!.

I am still at it on the mechanical systems before I get back to the wing coverings, stabs and the windshield etc... I installed all the fuselage servos, wires and linckage, nothing fancy on the fuel line fill and overfill through the bottom of the cowl, 240z Great Planes fuel tank.

I am still waiting on my J-tec wrap around muffler for the PT-19, in the mean time I have added some panel and revit detali to the vertical stab, and covering the controls with Coverite fabric, after which I use the syringe to drop a little glue in line with the ribs, after it dries I rip a 3/8" wide peice of fabric and apply it as rib stitch detail.
