Giant Scale Top Flite FW-190 Electrified

1 Attachment(s)
Ok guys, here we go. I just did an electric conversion to the Top Flite Giant Scale FW-190. After seeing the first prototype of the Top Flite FW-190, Iknew it would be a great choice to convert to electric power. By having the hatch up on top it was the natural candidate for the E conversion.

If you guys would like Iwill also go into how we detailed and weathered the FW-190.

By the way this is a true electric conversion in that I also used the new Robart Electric Retracts.

Here are a few pics!

Gorgeous! Now how about some shots of the power system?

Hi Walt,

That is just what I was working on. :)

Ok so for power Iwent with the RimFire 65cc motor, Castle Creations Ice 160HV2 and a 12s1p 5000 mAh pack. The current prop is is a 23X10 Falcon and I am pulling 63 amps.

When looking at the hatch you can see where I had to widen out the top section. Idid that so that I could then mount the batteries to a try and put them vertically into the nose and run a velcro strap around them to the firewall. I will get a pic of the plate and any other pics you guys would like to see. Just let me know.

Nice work! Glad to see a Rimfire on such a great project. I've pretty much settled on them for all my new motors. They meet all my needs.

Hi Casey,

The Gas version is about 22-24 lbs, I have not weighted the E version, but it does feel lighter, I would say about 20-21 lbs. I will try to get a weight for you over the weekend.

Hi Walt,

That is great to hear! I am going to be trying differnet props on this set up. I am very happy with the proformance I am getting, good speed and lots of vertical but Iknow Ican pull more out of the motor and batteries. I also want to go with a three blade. I am thinking I am going to try a 3 blade 24X12.

Dan,

I'm considering using that same setup, how would you rate it, and what kind of flight times are you getting please?

If I wasn't finishing a Lein/Holman 190.... I'd have to have this one from TF!

I am very pleased with the set up, using that prop, I have tons of power, most of the flight is at half throttle but when you want to go vertical it will do that with no problem. The entire system stays nice and cool since it is only drawing 63 amps. The batteries are ambient temp when I take them out of the plane after a 4-5 min flight. As for flight times, I have been doing about 4-5 min and only putting 2300-2500 mah back in so I would guess you could fly about 6-7 min with no problem and have some left over.

Dan this is great. thats the power set up i hope to pick up tomorrow at the LHS. only i was thinking the the Xoar 22x14 and 8kmah batteries.

That should work, I would think you could still go up in Dia if you wanted.

Hey guys this plane was a sweet looking, and with Dan at the controls a smooth flying 190! I was seriously impressed with the slow speed flight envelope it had as well as it's scale and high speed presentation. If your looking for a Focke Wulf this would be my choice and suggestion!!!

I also want to add Dans scale detail and weathering he applied was awesome!

My ESM D9 has the same rimfire 65. My prop is a 21x14. After a roughly 4-5min flight, I put 3800mah back in each of the 6s 6000mah batteries and I never went over 5/8's throttle. A 22x14 will consume more amps faster so I doubt you'd be pleased with the flight time.

I will be trying a 23x12 this weekend. I also have a 20x14 3 blade I want to test.

Please let me know how those props turn out.  I am still in the testing phase and want to see what else is out there.  I would not mind keeping the flights at 4 min.  That is what I have my timer set for now and everything is cold and with the current draw I am seeing it should be fine to go up a little bigger.

Dan, could you show us a picture of the RX's antenna installation?

Thanks.

4 mins is not enough time for me to enjoy the flight...and even less so during a warbird event with 6 others in the air and having to get up and down in just 4 mins isnt my idea of a good time.

I like the speed the 21x14 gives as i can outrun any 50+cc gasser warbird with ease, Id just like to stay upm for awile without sacrificing too much in the max speed department

I suggest if you want to go with a 3 blade prop go with 10s it will allow you to swing more load. The 12s is if you looking for all out speed with the smallest prop that motor can swing with out going over the max amps. With that motor you should be using a 24-26x10 with the 12s. With a 10s pack 27" prop.

Dan, how much lead do you have in the nose?

Dan,
I'd be interested on how you weathered it, especially on the monokote.

I've seen weathering dome by a simple sharpie or just brushing the diluted black or brown paints on the monocote.

+1. Four minutes is just about how long it takes my nerves to calm down and enjoy flying:D

Dwayne,

I will try to get a few pics over the next few days and get them up for you.

Joe,

I did not have to add any lead to the front of the plane.  :)

RE: Giant Scale Top Flite FW-190 Electrified

Here is how I weathered it:

I started off with a scotch pad #0000 and went over all the Monokote on the airplane, it took off any slight bit of sheen that the dull Monokote had. Then I went online and found a 3-view of the FW-190 and looked at the panel lines and I picked out the major lines and drew them on the airplane with a thin sharpie. Then I took a 2-56 ball driver and traced over the sharpie line and that gave me the panel lines that I was looking for. Once they were on I took rubbing alcohol and cleaned off all the sharpie. Next still looking at the 3-view I looked for where the rivets went on the lines and I put them in using a soldering Iron with a pin point. Just touch the Monokote and it melts the covering just enough to give it texture and looks great!

Now for making it dirty. This part is totally up you as to how dirty you want to make the bird. I took Tamiya black paint and thinned it out with rubbing alcohol and just put some on a scrap towel and pulled it across the plane. I did this with the entire plane, remember to always go front to back to give it the affect of having been flying and not painted. Once that coat is dry I took a flat clear from a can and went over the plane to seal that paint layer. Next I took chalk/ charcoal (the stuff that comes in sticks) and I used it to exaggerate some of the black. Example around the guns, hinges. panel lines..... So I would put the chalk on and then smudge it or pull it back with my finger and it would give it that look. Once I was happy with that I went and put one more lite coat of clear on it and I was good to go.

Hope that helps!

Nice, what brand of clear did you use, topflite flat clear ?

thanks
