unboxed my birthday present a day early! woot!

Hellcat716 06-03-2014 03:14 PM

Had to send my fuselage back today. The left side of the fuselage just behind the cowl was crushed in shipping. Everything else seems to be fine. Looks like it should be another great flying model.

pittsdriver 06-03-2014 04:21 PM

Got mine today also. Don

77chickenhawk 06-03-2014 05:52 PM

That is great to see thank you very much. The counseling is the exact same diameter as CMP 82" zero I was also wondering if you can measure the length and width of the canopy. I'm trying to see if it will fit my CMP zero because I damaged mine. Top-flight parts will surely be better to acquire then anything from CMP LOL and Topflite's canopy looks like a far better part.

Chris Nicastro 06-03-2014 10:10 PM

Thanks for the cowl measurements. We might consider modifying the cowl to fit the radial engine, its not too far off.

Anyone going to use the EME onboard starter for this kit?

I was thinking of buying the new EFI 62 from Horizon but they're still not in yet... I also looked at the 60cc from EME w/ the built in electric starter (www.milehighrc) but it's too big (almost 5 inches to top of cylinder from the center of the prop shaft). The center of the cowl to the edge is less than 4.5 inches so that would have a lot of engine hanging out of the cowl.

I may just buy the EME55 again w/ the electric starter but I don't like how the plug is offset to the side instead of to the back (plus a wrap around muffler from JTec is almost $100).

Looks like I'm going to do a DLE55RA and buy the electric starter from MileHighRC like I did for my TF GS FW190...

lot of lucky guys on here making me real jealous lol... cant wait to see some sweet flights.

blainer48 06-04-2014 03:19 PM

I got mine on Monday and had to ship the entire thing back today. There were some cracks on the fuse. The scoop under the motor box was cracked out on both sides exposing the fiberglass. Lucky for me Tower is out of stock so I have to wait now until the next shipment. So, I will have one on backorder. Sort of bummed out after waiting so long to get my hands on the Zero. Oh well.

WOW.. Sounds like I need to contact Tower for that one since I'm flipping/glassing mine.

pittsdriver 06-04-2014 07:14 PM

Just starting mine. It needs lots of iron work. Don

Build note for those of you who sprung the extra for electric tail wheel retract...

After installing your tail feathers, etc. it will walk you through installing your tail wheel. You'll find that the electric tail wheel retract actuator will hit the wood that holds the rear most horizontal stab tube (two pass through the fuse for the horizontal stab). I'm going to have to figure out a way to either shave that hump of wood significantly or modify the retract.

A friend of mine, Tim Cardin - President of OCMA (www.flyocma.com), recommended I use a heat gun and a thick wool sock... The result was amazing and no marks (like when I used an iron on my TF GS FW190)...

blainer48 06-06-2014 03:42 PM

That sucks about the electric tail wheel retract. Keep us informed with what you come up with because my plan was to go with the electrics. I guess I have some time to wait and watch since mine had to be returned and I am waiting on backorder for the replacement.

Mine is the same. I have a Dental Lab so I have a slim handpiece that I can get to it with. Don

sparky4lawndart 06-07-2014 05:45 AM

So... I silver soldered a 1 inch sanding drum to a tube and used my cordless drill to shave a bit off that hump... It took finesse but nothing overt... here's a video of the retracts working...

I haven't gotten a measurement on the canopy yet from anybody I was wondering if I could get one. Linght and width please thank you

Lifer 06-07-2014 06:08 AM

A rather major oversight on Top Flite's part.

hkgdcshu 06-07-2014 07:42 AM

19 3/4 long and 6 inch wide at the fuse touch point

77chickenhawk 06-07-2014 11:59 AM

Awesome thank you very much

77chickenhawk 06-07-2014 01:11 PM

Well it appears the canopy is three-quarter inch too long for the CMP zero

If you don't mind a little cutting, there's definitely a seam that you can cut to shorten the canopy a bit...

here's a pic

77chickenhawk 06-07-2014 04:48 PM

Hmmm. I'll have to call Tower or Horizon and find out how much they cost. I need to get a spinner anyway
