We can see that global crises did not affect you. :D

RE: Ziroli F6F Hellcat Builder's Diary

As you can see there is no crisis in my modeling Combine...
Joking aside, two of the three hellcat are from my friend Dule. He bought from me, a few years ago, a Hellcat kit with plastic fuselage, which I bring from Top Gun at 2008, and last year and my model that I flew and described in this topic.

Now I made my second Ziroli's Hellcat (that all wooden kit), and this time I try to avoid all errors I made on my first Hellcat model.
I did not write about all the details so I made another kit, I'll just say that I am very mindful of the weight, which was a problem in the first Hellcat.

For the new Hellcat, I intended Zenoah GT 80, with the scale exhausts.

Scale exhaust system I was making my friend Sasa from *abac.

http://i1089.photobucket.com/albums/...rzic/18-22.jpg

On the water jet machine, I cut the exhaust flange and from the German firm Krumscheida I reached the pipes.

http://i1089.photobucket.com/albums/...erzic/5-67.jpg

My idea is to create a semi open exhaust, which will be located in the same place on the fuselage, as it was on the right Hellcat.

Here is a few photos of the exhaust system...

http://i1089.photobucket.com/albums/...erzic/4-69.jpg

http://i1089.photobucket.com/albums/...erzic/6-63.jpg

http://i1089.photobucket.com/albums/...erzic/8-54.jpg

http://i1089.photobucket.com/albums/...erzic/1-73.jpg

http://i1089.photobucket.com/albums/...erzic/9-52.jpg

http://i1089.photobucket.com/albums/...erzic/7-57.jpg

Than same job on the right side...

http://i1089.photobucket.com/albums/...rzic/11-44.jpg

After that we made a hole on the scale exhaust...

http://i1089.photobucket.com/albums/...rzic/13-37.jpg

...fine tuning...

http://i1089.photobucket.com/albums/...rzic/12-40.jpg

...and weld pipe on it...

http://i1089.photobucket.com/albums/...rzic/16-28.jpg

Same procedure on the other side...

http://i1089.photobucket.com/albums/...rzic/17-25.jpg

...and here is a result...

http://i1089.photobucket.com/albums/...rzic/19-21.jpg

http://i1089.photobucket.com/albums/...rzic/21-18.jpg

On those photos fuselage is up side down, so we made little holes and weld thin pipes for draining exhaust oil...

http://i1089.photobucket.com/albums/...rzic/20-19.jpg

http://i1089.photobucket.com/albums/...rzic/22-17.jpg

http://i1089.photobucket.com/albums/...rzic/23-15.jpg

http://i1089.photobucket.com/albums/...rzic/24-14.jpg

Finally, we add teflon tube which are connect parts of the exhaust system...

http://i1089.photobucket.com/albums/...erzic/26-9.jpg

http://i1089.photobucket.com/albums/...rzic/25-11.jpg

http://i1089.photobucket.com/albums/...erzic/27-8.jpg

http://i1089.photobucket.com/albums/...erzic/28-7.jpg

How will this exhaust work, we'll see...

RE: Ziroli F6F Hellcat Builder's Diary

Some more photos of the working on Hellcat...

In the meantime I add glass coat and filler on fuselage and wing. After that I start with details...

Between center panel and wing tips was a little gap, so I made stripes from thin aluminum (0,3 mm) and glued it on the wing tips...

http://i1089.photobucket.com/albums/...rzic/21-19.jpg

http://i1089.photobucket.com/albums/...rzic/22-18.jpg

http://i1089.photobucket.com/albums/...rzic/24-15.jpg

http://i1089.photobucket.com/albums/...erzic/29-7.jpg

On ailerons I add trimmers...

http://i1089.photobucket.com/albums/...rzic/26-10.jpg

http://i1089.photobucket.com/albums/...erzic/27-9.jpg

Than I start working on panel lines...
On my cutter I made 1,2 mm wide stripes...

http://i1089.photobucket.com/albums/...erzic/32-7.jpg

...and put it on model...

http://i1089.photobucket.com/albums/...rzic/21-20.jpg

http://i1089.photobucket.com/albums/...rzic/19-23.jpg

http://i1089.photobucket.com/albums/...rzic/20-21.jpg

http://i1089.photobucket.com/albums/...erzic/29-8.jpg

http://i1089.photobucket.com/albums/...erzic/30-8.jpg

http://i1089.photobucket.com/albums/...erzic/31-8.jpg

Than I start working on tail details. When I was made my first model, I cover tail surface with Oratex, add details, and paimt it. But, after some time in few places Oratex was separated.

http://i1089.photobucket.com/albums/...rzic/18-25.jpg

http://i1089.photobucket.com/albums/...rzic/17-28.jpg

http://i1089.photobucket.com/albums/...rzic/19-24.jpg

So, on this Hellcat, I put 0,8 mm balsa plate instead of Oratex, and want to made details from filler...
Control surfaces are stronger also...

First I put lines on which I add little, 2 mm, circles and other little details...

http://i1089.photobucket.com/albums/...rzic/20-22.jpg

http://i1089.photobucket.com/albums/...rzic/21-21.jpg

I used photos from original airplanes, and try to made details...

http://i1089.photobucket.com/albums/...erzic/5-71.jpg

http://i1089.photobucket.com/albums/...erzic/4-73.jpg

http://i1089.photobucket.com/albums/...rzic/22-20.jpg

http://i1089.photobucket.com/albums/...rzic/23-18.jpg

http://i1089.photobucket.com/albums/...erzic/7-60.jpg

http://i1089.photobucket.com/albums/...rzic/24-17.jpg

http://i1089.photobucket.com/albums/...rzic/25-14.jpg

Now I masking areas which must stay lower, and than I will add filler...

http://i1089.photobucket.com/albums/...erzic/33-6.jpg

http://i1089.photobucket.com/albums/...erzic/34-6.jpg

On cowl, I made shifting flaps, from 0,3 mm aluminum plate. Servo is on the top of the cowl...

http://i1089.photobucket.com/albums/...erzic/9-55.jpg

http://i1089.photobucket.com/albums/...erzic/8-57.jpg

http://i1089.photobucket.com/albums/...rzic/11-47.jpg

http://i1089.photobucket.com/albums/...rzic/12-43.jpg

My friend Dule work on his Hellcat also, and he put glas, epoxy resin and filler on wooden parts of his plastic fuselage...

http://i1089.photobucket.com/albums/...rzic/18-24.jpg

http://i1089.photobucket.com/albums/...erzic/34-5.jpg

http://i1089.photobucket.com/albums/...rzic/25-13.jpg

His wing tips are ready for panel lines...

http://i1089.photobucket.com/albums/...erzic/33-5.jpg

...and fuselage will be in next few days...

http://i1089.photobucket.com/albums/...rzic/27-11.jpg

Thanks Antonio...

I add filler on tail surface so it now look like this...

http://i1089.photobucket.com/albums/...erzic/4-74.jpg

I putt, with pencil, lines for rivets and start adding details on lower side of the wing...

amazing job Mirce, what is the material you use on your circles, rivets, doors and hatches. Please keep the pics coming, you are helping on my hellcat build, thank you.

mirce 07-17-2011 05:30 PM

RE: Ziroli F6F Hellcat Builder's Diary

Aaron, thanks...

For circles, rivets, doors and hatches I use Oracal 641 silver self adhesive tape. I have Roland cutter and made all that details myself in my work shop.

http://i1089.photobucket.com/albums/...erzic/36-6.jpg

http://i1089.photobucket.com/albums/...erzic/35-7.jpg

http://i1089.photobucket.com/albums/...erzic/34-7.jpg

For little circles, screws... I use one layer of Oracal foil, but for doors and Hatches I use two layers.
For cutting little details you must have cutter knife with sharper top, and pressure on Roland cutter is 70 gr.
For two layers foil I use normal cutter knife and bigger pressure, 180 gr. But, that is not enough, so you need to cut all doors or other parts 4-5 times. Cutter always cut at same line...

This are knifes for cutter...

http://i1089.photobucket.com/albums/...aterzic/93.jpg

http://i1089.photobucket.com/albums/...aterzic/94.jpg

Upper is for little parts...

I use Corel program for drawing details...

http://i1089.photobucket.com/albums/...aterzic/88.jpg

For detail source I use very good draw from Hellcat plastic model, one very good plastic model, photos from Hečllcat in Air and Space Museum...

Little circles on wing I made from 2 mm brass tube. On RCU in topic about my F9F Panther, I wrote how I do that. Here is a link:
http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/m_10..._1/key_/tm.htm

And finally fuselage. This is my second Ziroli Hellcat (about first you can read early in this topic), and on first one I made rivets on fuselage from white glue for wood furniture. They was little to big, so I decided to made rivets now from little vinyl circles...

First few photos from first model...

All little details are done...

Cockpit...

http://i1089.photobucket.com/albums/...erzic/9-67.jpg

http://i1089.photobucket.com/albums/...erzic/8-69.jpg

Choke is servo operated...
http://i1089.photobucket.com/albums/...erzic/8-68.jpg

For flaps I use JR Match Box, with separate battery just for Match Box...
http://i1089.photobucket.com/albums/...rzic/10-63.jpg

http://i1089.photobucket.com/albums/...rzic/25-19.jpg

On the top of the cowl is servo which open and close flaps. Big holes will give better cooling...

http://i1089.photobucket.com/albums/...rzic/31-13.jpg

http://i1089.photobucket.com/albums/...rzic/32-12.jpg

http://i1089.photobucket.com/albums/...rzic/13-50.jpg

http://i1089.photobucket.com/albums/...erzic/3-95.jpg

http://i1089.photobucket.com/albums/...rzic/13-52.jpg

http://i1089.photobucket.com/albums/...erzic/6-84.jpg

http://i1089.photobucket.com/albums/...erzic/3-94.jpg
Inside is flexible tube for fresh air for carburator area... Two little holes are for scale exhaust cooling...

http://i1089.photobucket.com/albums/...erzic/7-76.jpg

http://i1089.photobucket.com/albums/...erzic/8-71.jpg

http://i1089.photobucket.com/albums/...erzic/9-69.jpg

http://i1089.photobucket.com/albums/...erzic/2-98.jpg
Plastic fins was add to separate carburator area and for better hot air flow out from cowl...

http://i1089.photobucket.com/albums/...erzic/3-94.jpg
For better cooling I made hole on the bottom of the fire wall. That hole continues in wings center panel and trough flaps on the bottom of the center panel hot air go out side of model. That flap is workable on servo and it is on same channel with flaps on cowl...

Most of the time I work on engine. As I wrote here last year, my GT 80 with Xoar 24x10 give 12,4 kg of thrust. On model which was 22,5 kg (with fuel) that was very under power.
For this second Hellcat my goal was to made lighter model for which GT 80 will be enough.
New model is just little under 19 kg and I need to add 600 gr lead in the front. Now CG is right like on the plan. I remember that last year, after maiden we removed 700gr lead!!! So, I hope that will be same this year...

For Zenoah GT 80 I choose Xoar 23x8 propeller, and I get 15,5 kg thrust on 7200-7300 rpm on the ground...
On this model I made moving flaps so, area for cooling is much bigger. Also, as you can see on photos, inside of cowl I add two plastic fin to direct hot air outside. Right fin prevent sucking fuel out from carburator.
On the front of the cowl I add plastic for prevent air to come inside in lower part of the cowl. But, one hole with flexible tube send fresh cool air in carburator area...

Hope all that details will help in engine and model performance...

Best regards from Novi Sad, Serbia

So far I made 15 flights with Hellcat. It is soooooooo good model, and I am very, very satisfied. GT 80 is more than enough, and with scale exhaust sound is loud and fantastic.
Fins on cowl work great, engine is much cooler than on first model...

Mirce,
I applaud your choice in color scheme. I've been planning to do a large scale Hellcat in the same color and markings. I've got my work cut out for me if I'm going to end up with anything as nice as yours though. Did you create a digital rendering of the "bullet-dodging-bee" nose art emblem? If so, is that something you'd be willing to share? I've been contemplating for a while now how I would create that nose art marking; looks like you've figured it out perfectly! Excellent work on this fine aircraft!

Hi Mirce, thanks for replying to my inquiry. Your detailing sets with the press-on rivets and screw heads are something to definitely keep in mind when building these large warbirds. Can you also cut custom shapes for panels, hatches, and etc.?

About the nose-art, did you paint on the bee, or is that some kind of sticker or decal?

Thanks again!

Hello Hessian,

I can offer for your model few my products:

- Mirce Finish Set
- Detail Set
- Paint Masc for stars and Bars.

For F6F nose art, I draw it from few pictures I find on Internet. Maybe it's not 100% same, but its very, close to original.
In process of Hellcat painting, my friend paint black and white circles, and I made all other from vinyl foils...

I can cut those nose art to you. If you want, I can apply all on white circle, so in that case, you just need to paint black surface on cowl, and apply my sticker. I will inform you what diameter need black circle need to be...

For more information about Mirce Finish Set, Detail Set, and Paint Masc, please visit www.nsmodelers.rs where can find all about every product I made for scale finishing...

If you have some questions send me e-mail on: [email protected]

Best regards

Mirce
