CMP 160 sized Texan

Has anyone flown the 160 sized AT-6 Texan? I am thinking about getting one and putting a gasser on it. Here is the link to it...it looks nice. http://www.cmpairplane.com/at-6.htm
Ler me know your thoughts on it.

Looks nice, hopefully they have solved the chipping paint on the wings and tail feathers problem[&:]

RE: CMP 160 sized Texan

Is that an issue on all of their planes? I think I heard something about chipping paint on some other models like the Hellcat or FW-190.

They all chip on the leading edges, some even peel. They say the problem is resolved but they are still chipping. [:o]

I've got a spitfire and a zero. Had another spitfire lost to a high speed stall (dumb thumbs). They all chipped.

RE: CMP 160 sized Texan

I`ve just come across this thread having just posted a query on this model on a previous one. Some weeks ago while in Australia I read a kit review on this model in a recent Australian RCM magazine - not to be confused with the defunct USA magazine.

Unfortunately I wasn`t able to retain a copy then, but was impressed enough to take steps to order one. This model is used for AT-6 racing in Oz. I heard that an unpainted version was available, and this was confirmed just today. That`s the one I`m going for.

I`d still be interested to learn what experiences anyone has had with this particular model.

Seems to me this must be very similar in size to the Midwest kit.

Who in the US has the T-6 in stock?

The only place I have found it at all is Chief Aircraft.

I went back to Australia a couple of weeks ago and returned just yesterday with one of the unpainted ones as previously planned.

Has anyone else acquired one of these in recent times and want to swap construction notes? I have a few loose ends to tie up on other outstanding projects before starting on this one.

they are advertised in the classifieds right now and are located in California. I'm sure they have plenty.

the plane looks very cool.

Ak models has them in stock

http://www.ak-models.com/cmp_at6_texan_160.htm

Doesn't look like the silver one has any paint so shouldn't have to worry about it chipping.

Just about ready to fly mine waiting for the retracts to come from Sierra. Using OS160 with Jtec pitts style muffler.Had to have it made for this plane because of firewall clearance. Had to have retracts made also cause no one seems to make them!.As far as assembly had no problems used two elevator servos didnt like the Y pushrod. So far havnt had problem with paint chipping. This plane comes in two color schemes red yellow and silver or silver and black. got mine at Jett Hobbies in Vancover BC .Good service talk to Alvin

I have two of them coming. They should be here Saturday. I got mine from Alex at AK Models. Great guy to deal with. I called and talked to him several times or left messages and he always took the time to get back with me. I and a friend will be installing converted Stihl 27CC weedie engines in ours. Dimensionally they should be a perfect match and should fly them well.

Custom retracts? Would the Robarts for the old Midwest Kit have worked?

RE: CMP 160 sized Texan

I'm interested to follow this thread - my first ARF. I haven`t started on it yet. First impressions are that the quality and workmanship seem pretty good although the assembly instructions look to be little more than a second-rate chinese comic.

I am planning to use an existing NIB set of Robart 620 retracts but haven't checked them out against the wing yet. These are the ones specified for the Midwest AT-6.

I`m also going to monitor what engines you guys are using. I understand that the new OS 1.40 2C engine is favored by the Aussies for their pylon racing. I don't have one of them and am not planning to obtain a new engine forthis project, but I do have one each of the following engines to choose from and would appreciate any feed back as to a good practical choice:-

OS 1.60
ST 2500 (NIB- the old 'original' Italian version)
Zenoah G-26
Zenoah G-38 (too much?)
Homelite 30cc with a carb ex 33cc Homelite chainsaw

RE: CMP 160 sized Texan

If you need nose weight go with the g-26 for scale flying or the g-38 if you want excess power. If you don't need the nose weight go with the OS 1.60.

Lonnie,

Could you give me some info on the Sierra retracts? How much and who to talk to? I wonder what retracts the manufacturer shows in their pictures of the plane?

Thanks,

Ray

RE: CMP 160 sized Texan

Anthony H,

Thanks for your thoughts re engines. I`ll give this some thought before jumping. For openers I`ll put each of those engines on the scales before I start and see what comes from that.

Ray,

I heard from the Aussies that 'Eurokit' produced a set of retracts specifically for this model. They may be the ones shown? I also heard that they were very expensive and the early ones had problems with the oleo legs. I just tried a Google search on these and would you believe wound up downloading seven pages being a full product review of this kit including mention of these retracts. The original review was printed in the Aussie RCM magazine - issue #71 - April/May 2005.

Has anyone either done, or considered including flaps on this model?

Alan W

How much does a finished CMP AT-6 typically weigh? The specs say 5.4-5.6 kg but that sounds low. How much noseweight is needed to balance it?

crownvic 03-30-2006 12:30 PM

RE: CMP 160 sized Texan

The box on mine says 5600grams which is 200 oz or 12 1/2 lbs if my math is ok.I think thats about the right weight havnt got the retracts in mine yet and didnt weigh it but i will and let you know.Using a 2100MAH nicad pak right on top of the fuel tank so hope I dont have to use any nose weight

Guys,
I'm going with a Brillelli 25ccGT on mine. Should do the job nicely! I am not a retract fan so I will be putting a set of robo-struts on and that's it! I'll post some pics once I get started.

Happy Flying!

Does it have a three-piece wing that can be taken apart for transport?

Yes. Center is fiberglass.

Loopman, I'm curious about your engine/plane combo. I'm wondering what engine to use on mine. Did you use the magneto version, or e.i.? Was any weight needed to balance? Did it fit in the cowl? How was the performance? Thank you.

BTW if you have pics, I'd love to see them!

Hi All

Just pick one up from Raidentech/Nitroplanes.com. Great guys, lots of inventory great prices. Not much on conversation though.

On these arfs you need to go back to basics. Make sure you use your own successful calculations for CG. Most of the CMP locations are not forgiving (to far aft) , . Don't be afraid to put all the ballast you need in this AT6 to Cg it. It is a tail heavy airframe in general as a model. The covering will come off, its cheap. The cowl will need to be beefed up. Good place for some nose wieght.

Even with all your "upgrades" you'll still come out ahead.

A few things to note about the CMP arfs and arf in general from China. They are made in a masses and quick. If your paint chips, remember you only paid around $250-$300 for a fully assembled model. Imagine if you paid $500.00 for some of the chinese models that are smaller than this one, its paint will still chip, its still made from polyester resin, just more cost to you.

Mine will have an OS 160, robarts, I will glass the outer panels and airfoil the Hstab. And put my own colors on it.

So the work you do on it, you start way ahead of where you would be if you bought a kit for more money.

I'm not an arf guy but i currently have. CMP: 2-53" P51Ds, 2- 70" zeros, 1-54" zero, 1-Mosquito and the 82" AT6.

Steve

I,m thinking about getting a AT-6 in this size range. I was originally thinking of going with a Midwest kit but have since come across this version of a 1/6th AT-6 and agree that for $250us you get quite a head start and can modify the airframe if desired to get a better flying more scale apperance without to much difficulty. Besides the 3 piece wing has its definate advantages for storage and transportation etc.

Steve I could not agree more , if you dont have a ton of time the CMP are a great place to start as far as just adding to the basics to make the kits better or going farther to add even more scale . I have the 73" p40 as my next build , I know I need a ton of mods but its was a good frame to start on .

Keep us posted , planes looks interesting and worth buying .

Hey guys I just recieved my CMP AT-6. I,m very impressed with the workmanship and the basic airframe as a starting point for making a really nice Sport scale warbird. I too am going with Robart retracts with mods the the glass center section of the wing. I will post some pics this weekend if I can figure out how to do so. As for anyone just interested in putting the plane as delivered together and flying I see no major obstacles with that choice either [ well maybe the hardware needs replacing]. I got mine through my local hobby shop and they sourced it through AKM models $320 cdn you can,t beat the price.

I finial got around to working on my t-6, can you all give me some suggestions on how to make the wings detachable.
It looks like it going to be a quick and easy build, I am using a g-26, robart retracts. and looking for a better tail wheel.

I posted my experience in Questions and answers Anthony. I wouldn't even consider one if I were you. No customer support and too many other issues. Yes in my other post I misspelled glued, I hit the wrong key and not the spell-checker. Whooopse.

I'm looking at this t-6 as my first large bird. I really love the look of it! I have a new Magnum 1.80fs that I would really like to use. I've heard some refrences that it's got a short cowl. Would a four stroke fit the cowl? Also excuse my ignorance, but I notice quite a few of you guys ether use big 2-stroke glow or 2-stroke gas engines, why no four stroke glows?

Thanks,
Dave

DLEVETT 11-20-2006 06:47 PM

RE: CMP 160 sized Texan

Hey guys I,m still trying to figure out how to upload some pics.I,ve got mine stripped and have already primered up the fuse. The construction is as good as any I,ve seem. As for the 4 stroke issue, the cowl is short you,ve got 5 1/2" from the firewall to the cowl face. I,ve looked at a few different options 2 stroke, 4 stroke and gas and still haven,t decided. I,m sure that adding weight to the front of this airframe is going to be necessary. I,m shooting for a 14-16lb AUW. With this in mind though I,m starting my search for a suitable engine that will put out 14-17lbs of thrust with no bigger than a 17" prop.
thx Dave

Darrell B. 11-25-2006 03:36 PM

RE: CMP 160 sized Texan

Dave.
Why are you limiting your prop to 17 inches?
