topflite P-47 questions (60 size)
 

Hi guys

I have just started a tf p-47 .60 an was wondering what engine to use. Many of the posts I have read say a 120 is the way to go. Currently I have a 90 super tigre avalible as well as a magnum 91 4-stroke. I was leaning toward the 4-stroke but will this be enough power?

Also how did you finish your p-47? I would like to glass it but this would be my first glassing job. Would glassing make it too heavy for the engines above?

What do you think about using polyurethane instead of epoxy for glassing? good or bad idea?

I ran a YS120 in mine. It was a little heavy at 13 lbs. I fly at 5600 ft so I did need the power. George

Mine is just under 13lbs (glassed and fully detailed), and is marginal on a ST75. I would go no less than the ST90 if you're glassing it, but would personally lean towards a FS of 1.20 size. The Magnum is probably too small if you're glassing it.

Watch the weight in the tail too - keep EVERYTHING as far forwards as possible, to avoid excess nose weight.

I'm flying the Corsair and P-40 on OS .91 SURPASS engines, they fly very well. I'm using 14x8 props on them.
if I backed off to a 14x6 they would probably perform even better.

Mine is the razorback version, weighs 9 lbs., 4 ozs. with flaps and CJ retracts. It has an inverted Magnum 91 four stroke that is very smooth and reliable and will do all scale maneuvers. Could probably use a little more power but I'm very happy with it considering the additional cost of going up a step to a Saito 100 or any 120. Plane is really a stable and great flyer. (On the maiden I trimmed the elevator one click up and touched nothing else.)

Kevin I have a 120 fs in mine it weighs 14 lbs loaded. good flying plane. I use polycoate on all my glass work no problem and no mess...

I am in the middle of my bubble top P-47 CJ retracts,robart retractable tail wheel,full cockpit'etc..., I am glassing it with Varathane Diamond WB poly with .6oz glass going to be running a small gas engine a BCMA26, one of my club members has a ST 91 2 stroke in his and it flys great I just wanted to build something gas powered

I did mine in MonoKote and used a YS .91AC with an on-board glow. The plane came in at 10 pounds and was seriously over-powered for scale-like flight. I rarely used more than 3/4 throttle for anything beyond take off. Sure, it flew great at full throttle but mach 1.2 was not in the Jug's envelope. A 4-stroke engine just sounds better in a warbird and one that isn't running at max rpm's sounds great. If you're going with a 4-stroke, I stick with a YS .91 or 1.10 or anyone else's 1.20. and keep the revs down. You'll love it!

If I were to build this plane again I'd go with a fiberglass finish and paint. Use the really light glass cloth like Sig .56 ounce and Z-Poxy thinned with alcohol. The added weight is very small but the P-47's wing can handle lots of weight without any sacrifce in flight performance. Top Flite hit a home run with this kit!

PS: I used the flaps for each landing only because I spent a lot of time building them but the plane doesn't need them.

OK guys thanks for all the replies. This has been a big help.
For right now it looks like the super tigre 90 2-stroke would be the best engine as i think I will glass the p-47 using polyurethane. I have a 120 but it was planned for an Ultimate bipe. But I may end up using it for the p-47 in the end
