P-51 Tail fin offset Yes or No
Have a Pica 1/5 scale Mustang. 89" On the plan it showes the rudder fin on the centerline. In the manual it calls for one degre left on the fin. That is 9/16 offset at the front.
I'm thinking it probably needs the off set, but would like some more experianced advice. It sure looks odd offset. Plane is 28 lb. Has a ZDZ 60 that is rated at 38 lb. thrust. Need some advice Thank You Terry |

MOst full size propeller driven warbirds have offset fins and/or rudder.

The real one has offset on it's fin.

1 degree on the real bird. Double check that 9/16" gives you 1 degree; that sounds a little on the large side.

Yes. You absolutely want the 1 degree offset with the front to the left or port side of the airplane. Double check your trig. on that measurement. It does sound excessive. I would expect it to be closer to 1/8" or less.
Somebody asked earlier why you would want this. 2 Reasons: 1) It helps you counter act torque the engine that naturally pulls you left on take off. YOu have to hold heavy right rudder with warbirds. 2) That same torque will require right trim for straight flight of the airplane in the sky. This 1 degree right thrust together with at least 1 degree right thrust in the engine will help you achieve a neutral trim. Leo |

Terry,
The full size Mustang has the offset, as stated above. I have built and flown the Pica Mustang. I had the offset and found that it was a great help keeping the Stang pointed straight down the runway on takeoff. I strongly suggest that you include it in yours. Cary |
