Radial engines and planes
 

With the interest of the new radials out there, he question arises...which planes to put them in? The radials i am talking about are the ASP 400, OS and SAITO Engines. These are roughly equivalent to a G62. My ASP 400 has a 8.5" diameter. These are some of the planes I hae come up with
1. Zirolli Skyraider
2. TFGS P47
3. TF STinson
4. Aeroworks PT-17 STEARMAN
5.Ultra RC/CMP Zero
6.PAC Aero giant GEE BEE ARF
7.Great Planes Aeromaster
8.IMP Dauntless Divebomber
9.SIST FW 190 A8

what do you guys have for suggestions?

Man...That ASP sure looks nice in there... That would be a perfect fit for the SisT FW 190. They have just theright amount of cowl space for it. Do you know if there is any way to convert that to gas?

is there away to convert the magnum to gas? I dont know of away . Glow will be expensive but hey, its only a hobby. Anyone know the dimensions of the TFGS Corsair cowl? Ian, so what isit that you have there?

The Bates 1/5 Wildcat, Bates 1/5 Buffalo, Hostetler 29% Jungmeister and an enlarged MAN Macchi C200 are all on my list of radial powered planes to build and fly. The Flair Stearman with the Robart 7 cyl is in these forums also.

I think the skyraider is a great subject and its rarely modeled.

Hey Carl, good tosee you here. So did you find one oof those glue rivet machines? Some of those choices might be a bit much for the ASP but for the saito's....no problem. Gringo, I should have my Skyraider finished this spring

I have not yet gone over the edge with panels and rivets. I just may do panel lines on the current Wildcat. I have some pics of a Jungie and will be doing that next with the Saito 325. I have a bad habit which seems to be getting worse ;-)

I have heard the Airworld FW-190 flown by Dino a couple of times and that is truly awsome.

Is there anyplace in the US to get the magnum radial? One of these days I'm gonna git one. Just love the sound of them.

In the US, I dont think so. Several of us got lucky and found them on ebay for about $400. Just got dropped on me that the Yellow Aircrat T6 fits the saito 450

Bates hellcat / cowling is eight & three quarters where the engine would sit.

What does the Bates normally take for a motor? Whats teh wingspana nd weight?

Just got word that the TFGS Corsair cowl is about 9.5" ID, which will fit the Magnum ASP400 easily

I've seen the Saito 450 fly a few of the Ziroli warbirds over the years (I remember a Corsair at Top Gun in the late 90s) and it worked really well.

I think it should work fine on most of the Z-planes, the Skyraider for sure, or the T-6, they both have a LOT of wing area. Sounded nice, too.

Only issue, I presume, would be that they would use a boatload of glow fuel in a flight, so you'd have a lot of weight to carry and a ton of gooey glow slime to clean :-)

The Saito 450R is just about a perfect replacement for the Zenoah G-62. If the plug wire for the G-62 can fit inside the cowl then there is plenty of room for the Saito 450. The Saito 450 has a very nice growl at mid throttle. At 96 oz it can help with a tail heavy plane and they are smoother than a gas engine. I use a 32 ounce tank for about 8-10 of thrilling flight. My Saito 325 seems to sip fuel unlike the 450.

There is always the Barth 1/4 scale Waco YMF. The 1/5th scale cowl is 8.25" so that would put the quarter scale at about 10". Sound like a perfect fit to me. Course, I'm kinda prejudiced. Hey don't yell at me about the warbird thing. Lots of WACO's were used in WWII. The USAAC snagged 15 of the SRE cabin models, and pranged several of them. Only 4 survive today. Lots of them were used by the CAP for costal patrols, as well as Air Search. That makes them Warbirds too.:D

On Towers web site I believe they said a OS 300(or320?) radial was NOT recommended for the T/F Corsair and T-bolt.

I have a 3.2 in my bates hellcat. wing span is 80 in. wieght is 22lbs. this size engine flyes this plane with power to spare!!!

I am thinking of buying a fw 190 for my asp 400 , and have a Platt 79.25" on hand. The cowl is almost 10" wide ,what do you guys think..? Can this possibly be a good combination? I was thinking that the platt 190 might be to small ,but on the other hand it has a short nose so it might not be a problem!

Brace it for the weight of the ASP and you should be fine. I would love to see pics and a build thread for that plane. I am sure it would be overpowered......just like the real one:D. How far into the build are you?

I have not bought it yet ,but will maybe do ,and will keep you informed if so! Hopefully it wont be to heavy with the ASP ,and a wing dropper in slow landings.

I've put the Saito 1.70 radial in a Platt Zero and it's the perfect fit both physically and power output wise. There are a few photos on one of these build threads somewhere about the Zero. Maybe I have one on this computer, I'll look.
