Me109 F/G by Fliteskin

Some have requested a condensed version of the building thread Im running on RCSB for the new 109 in 1/4.9 scale, so here it is.
I won't bother with small details like glue rib 1 to stick B, etc. Just the main sequence of events as it unfolds. First a word about the design: it comes directly from Willy Messerschmitt. With great 3 views and cross sections, a scale prototype was built. The fuselage is completely molded along with supercharger & wing saddle. Also wing tip and radiators are molded. These are very time consuming items, so molding parts saves the builder a few months time. The wing has scale NACA 2R1 14.2 root and 2412 tips with washout for less tip stalls. Along with working slats allows more scale take off and landings. The full size 109 had to land 3 points to avoid ground loops. More info on http://fliteskin.com/page7.html JG :) |

Wing is built over plan using laser cut balsa and ply.

Before skinning the top, leading ege gets drilled to accept the slats pushrods.
A sheet of fliteskin is cut to oversize slightly over the plans and then glue to the ribs and spars. |

Are the slats spring loaded/automatic, or are they servo controlled? If servo, when would they be used?

Tell me more about Elmer's Nano
Thanks |
RE: Me109 F/G by Fliteskin
Elmer's Nano is simply rebranded Elmer's Ultimate. Its a poly glue. I find it similar to Gorilla Glue except for the time to dry.

Time to see how the gear fits in the rails. Slight mod for the Spring Air set, ribs are cut for the Shindin Me109 gear.

Here is how I built the gear doors using 2 sheets of fliteskin together:
1. lay an oversized piece over the wheel well and using the template, draw the gear door shape. 2. Sand 100 grit the area over the gear door. 3. Apply slow CA over the first sheet and then place the second layer, previously sanded 100 grit. 4. once dry, cut to to match the door shape with scisors. A third layer can also be applied for more strengh. |

At last the flaps and slats are working together. Seing the slats moving forward when the flaps deploy is really cool.[8D]

How do you attache the Fliteskin? Looks like a great product. I love that 190D too! I wonder how much it sells for? Your 109 is going to be great! I don't know if I like the 109 or 190 better. They are both such nice looking planes.

RE: Me109 F/G by Fliteskin
Jeff,
Thanks for your comments, the skins are attched using Elmer's Nano glue. Similar to Gorilla but easier to sand on the spots that overflow a bit. Is a foaming glue so it does not take much. Only apply a bead over the ribs and spars. The key is to sand the skins with 100grit over the areas that will contact with the glue. Yes the 190D is a fantastic machine, flyes like a pattern plane too. Due to the Euro/Dollar exchange rate now the kit is probably about 2 grand[:o] I think the 109 will fly better, less wing loading. I calculate 18lbs weight. JG |

What thickness did you use? I tried to do it on a horizon stab and when it was done to "wavy" when it dried. How did you do yours?

ORIGINAL: Doolittleraider What thickness did you use? I tried to do it on a horizon stab and when it was done to "wavy" when it dried. How did you do yours? I use .010" 90% of the time and the results are great. This is how I've done the DH Hornt stab which has a 37" span. First I sheeted the top and the added the bottom half.\ The elevators are skinned with .007" JG |

I appreciate the effort but Please don't call this beautiful aifcraft a ME 109. True, it was built by Messerschmitt but the correct designation is BF-109. There has never been an Me 109. It's a common mistake.

RE: Me109 F/G by Fliteskin
You've got a point :D

RE: Me109 F/G by Fliteskin
Totally and utterly INCORRECT.
The Bf 109 and the Me 109 are both proper designations for the aircraft and BOTH were used in Germany. The Bf 109 name was used by the RLM until July of 1938, from there forward, they had the Me 109 name (while the RLM tried to enforce the rule that any plane that had the Bf designation remained the same, it did happen). Documents have been found from the RLM, Messerschmitt AG and others that in some documents used both the Bf 109 and Me 109 designation in the SAME document. Heck even the Luftwaffe called the Bf 109 the Me 109, and pronounced it "may hundert-neun". Thats a bit difficult to confuse with Bf 109. So, both Bf 109 and Me 109 are proper. That being said all dataplates up to and including the K models were listed as Bf 109's. |
