COMP ARF 110" F4U ARF WITH FOLDING WING ASSEMBLY

1 Attachment(s)
Arrival:
I'm starting an assembly thread on the new F4U Corsair that came today.
I'm not sure when I'll get started since I'm presently assembling Robart's 92" P-47.
Each morning, I just look at something and think that I'll work on 'that' today so 'who knows' what I'll be working on, tomorrow!.

pic 1-4:
The two very large boxes came from Fedex.
I couldn't wait for the deliver man to bring both in so I went out to help!
The boxes say to inspect the boxes and not take them if damaged.
They had a few holes so he was kind enough to help my open them and make sure all was OK: which it was.

First box:
pic 5/6:
Always a treat pulling the top of the box off!
The fuse, cowl, manual, folding wing mechanism, two bags of hardware, canopy/frame and a few other objects.

pic 7:
Tail wheel doors.

pic 8-10:
Inside the fuse.

pic 11-12:
cowl and LE wing vents.

(lots more pictures coming)

pic 7:
Two hardware bags and the manual.

First bag:

Hinges and hardware.

pic 9:
formers, etc.

pic 10:
four hardware bags separated by areas.

Second bag:
pic 11:
wood components plus the two small, silver FG parts that cover where the wing folds (as per the prototype...cool).

second box.

pic 1/2:
first open.

pic 3:
Outer wings are about 36" long.

pic 4:
Gear doors will have to be cut out.

pic 5-8:
Center wing.
The CF sleeve for the folding wing appears to also serve for the fixed wing since it has a cylinder hole in it.

pic 9:
Vertical stab/rudder.

pic 10:
Horizontal stab/elevators.
The areas of the CF composites that are suppose to be cloth have the texture of cloth and indent as cloth wood: cool.

stuff:

pic 1:
On Monday, I went to home depot and got my paint.
I'm going with the Marine's three color scheme.
The premium Behr exterior is no longer in quart cans so I bought a gallon and put it into four quart cans so it won't dry out when I have half of it left in the can (this plane will probably use two quarts, anyway!).

pic 2/3/4:
Looks like the only cockpit option is with D-balsa 1/4 scale Don Smith kit:
The Smith kit is 1/4 scale versus comparf's 1/4.5 but that should be close enough!

Here's my TF 86" version color scheme that I'll be using.
(she has gear doors but not on in this picture)
As with the Robart 92" P-47, I plan on making functional cowl flaps and sliding canopy.

more stuff.

pic 1:
The outer wings have plenty of CF lining the inside.

pic 2:
The ailerons are pre-slotted and there are holes in the inside formers and at the end of the aileron in which it appears that a provided rod is inserted to insure the hinges do not come out.

pic 3:
Looking through the LE of the center wing air vent, you can see the CF main spar: that should be plenty strong for the main gear!

pic 4:
about 1/2" thick high grade ply going into the rib for the gear mounts.

pic 5:
CF pins for the center wing front mounting pins.

pic 6:
An excellent, smooth finish.
I haven't found any imperfections, so far.

pic 7:
Looks like the same procedure on the elevators as on the ailerons for hinges.

pic 8:
Though the fuse has no formers behind the cockpit, the sides are very rigid and do no flex when pushed on.

RE: COMP ARF 110" F4U ARF WITH FOLDING WING ASSEMBLY

hello you lucky guy you!!!!......

I was wondering when you ordered this plane. Interested in the time it took for it you arrive? Also are you putting a radial in it?????

What do you think about no formers in the fuse?

Boy you have shelled out the big bucks between these two models wow I envy you ....lol....

The two most wanted planes. unfortunatly no one makes a true 1/5 scale model of both planes.. If someone did I would be working to that direction.. and they would both have the 150 radial in them lol..

I ordered it at Joe Noll flyin in May.
I saw it fly at Joe Noll so no formers in the fuse must be OK!.
(see below for outer wing).
My house mortgage is paid off, no bills and I don't like to take vacations or eat out: that leaves $$$ for my hobbies!
(I do like to fly though, since I go through 25 gallons a year!)
I'm interested in a gas radial and the solo prop: Please email me if anyone has experience with these at [email protected].
======================
more stuff:

pic 1:
Interesting: the outer wing is like the fuse, only one rib but a very thick (about 1/2" thick) spar.
Like the fuse, there is no give on the surface when pressure is applied.
Like a crustacean, the exoskeleton is very strong.
This will make it easy to put nav lights on the wing tips!
No plastic covers for nav lights so I'll have to make my own.

pic 2/3:
Nice tight fit between fuse and center wing.

pic 4:
Those gear doors should last: they are made out of CF.

Very nice. Subscribed.

I ordered mine at the end of September. Just heard from my Comp-ARF rep that it shoud arrive in December, earlier than his original estimate. Mine is a plug-in wing.

When do you expect to receive your retracts?

Good luck with the build. I can not wait to have my hands on mine.

Organization:
Nothing gets glued until I read through the whole manual (probably several times) and sort all hardware to their respective parts.
I don't claim to be an expert on this assembly so point out any errors.

===================
Folding wing:

pic 1:
Folding wing parts.

pic 2:
Twelve M6 bolts and locking nuts to hold one side of the folding mechanism to the inner wing.

pic 3:
Four M5 bolts that will be drilled/tapped into the CF sleeve and into the outer side of the folding wing mechanism in the outer wing.
Two go into each wing and go perpendicular to the top of the folding wing mechanism.

pic 4:
Sixteen M4 bolts and blind nuts and rib supports to hold the TE of outer wing to the inner wing (front rotation pivot points).

pic 5:
Hardware came out of the ARF bag.
Those two bolts and blind nuts must be the pivot point bolts where the two tapered ends of the aluminum hinge are connected.
(These bolts don't fit the ID of the holes so new ones will be ordered)

============
Flaps:

pic 6:
Flaps, hinges and hardware.
Hinges look like circuit board material and all hinges were in one large bag.

pic 7:
24 'L' shape hinges
6 straight shape hinges.
2 large pieces of material (sliding plates) to move the inner flap.
8 M2 short bolts and locking nuts
2 M2 long bolts and locking nuts.

The straight hinge is bracketed by two of the 'L' hinges and a short M2 bolt is the pivot point.
Where the outer flap moves the inner flap with the large flat piece of material (sliding plates), the hinges on both flaps are connected at the pivot point with a long M2 bolt (I guess this keeps the two flaps properly aligned so the one flap can move the other flap).
Two servos are needed for each side: one in the inner wing and one in the outer wing in pre-cut servo mounts in the ribs.

pic 8:
The hardware came out of the 'wing' bag.

==================
outer wing

pic 9:
outer wing parts for TE wing alignment.

pic 10/11:
Six aileron hinges go into pre-cut slots.
I think this plastic tube is used to align the hinges while the epoxy is drying.

WOW!!!

Sam That is one fine piece. I think you should bite the bullet and go for the radial. What a nice kit. and well packaged, too.

RE: COMP ARF 110" F4U ARF WITH FOLDING WING ASSEMBLY

I'm building a Don Smith 1/4 scale 121.5" wingspan F4U-1D Corsair that I am turning into a F4U-7 French Navy Korean War Era Warbird. I have Brian's cockpit and you shouldn't have any problem getting it to fit in your bird. I ended up with a ton of waste anyway. He did an excellant job on making the parts. If I ever get to the point of putting it in I'll post some pictures. He didn't make it until I asked him if he could so he did and after a couple months or more sent me a prototype for free so I could check it out. We talked about it and he made some changes. Then he perfected it and I bought the whole kit. How much did your plane cost?

Gibbs,
Prices are available at their web site:

I got the 792000 version.
Please list the web site for obtaining the cockpit kit.

===============
Organization (cont)
More details will follow when I actually start working on this bird.
Presently, I'm just trying to know where all the parts go and become thoroughly familiar with all instructions and catalogue all parts before doing any actual work.

pic 1:
Correction:
The pivot bolts for the TE rotation should use 8M bolts and locking nuts.

pic 2:
Four (break each in half) aileron/flap control horns (two for ailerons and two for flaps).

pic 3:
Aileron/flap hardware provided in the kit.

pic 4/5/6:
Control horns for the three flaps.
Left (flap next to fuse) flap (inside corner) gets 4/10 drill rod or if not ply inside, then cut open, glue ply and put bolt/blind nut in.
A ball socket is attached to the rod which where the ball socket connects to the flap servo.
The right flap (flap next to aileron) gets one of those control horns mentioned in pic 3.

pic 7:
Receiver tray.
The top center of the center wing will be cut out later for installation of the ply tray.

pic 8:
Outer wing correction:
The short bolts on the right should be used to hold the outer wing to the CF sleeve and outer part of the folding wing mechanism.
The longer bolts would probably go into the hydralic cylinder.

pic 9:
Tail wheel doors also CF.
Also, the entire inside of the fuse looks like it has a beige mylar lining.

pic 10/11:
Tail wheel ply parts.
Dry fitted.

Sam,

Here is the kit. I haven't removed it from the bag yet because I don't want to lose any small parts like knobs, etc. The seat frame it made out of brass tubing for strength. I hope you can make it out in the pick. There are also large parts in the box for the walls and the rear bulkhead. There is about 10 pages of instrutions to give you an idea of how complicated and scale looking it is. Here are some pictures. Plus if your not going to use a radial engine, this engine from William's Brothers is a WASP dummy engine kit and it looks pretty good to me. I'm putting it in front of my 3W 200cc twin.

Sam,

Looks pretty darn nice. I had one coming as well but I guess it will be a few more weeks before I see it. I am using a Moki radial for power with the Solo prop and hub. I also plan doing the sliding canopy as well, so I am looking forward to seeing how you accomplish it on yours. Anyway, good luck with it.

Ken
