After some time I made some progress on my La-5 FN. I made a fibreglass frame of the canopy and next step will be the opening rails. I had a problem with the tail wheel doors. It didn´t work, but I solved this problem with two springs.Tt hasn´t been perfect yet. Here are some pictures

i fly mine on an eflight 160 with 12 s .....it will fly but you won't have the vertical.....be more of a fly in a circle kind of plane

You think definitely it should fly? can you go vertical with eflite 160? which prop and batery capacity you use, and how long you can fly? sorry for a lot of question, and thanks for answer cheers

No, not vertical but can easily pull nice big loops, rolls, half reverse Cuban 8 turns. The prop is a 22x10 and I'm running two 6s packs of 5800 mAh each in parallel....I can usually get between 5 and 6 minutes and draw the packs down to about 20% after the flight.

Hi Svrco,

I have an eflite 160 powered LA-7 Ialso use 5800 mah packs however Iuse a 12S config with 16X10 or 16X12 Xoar prop, the 16X12 is a tad faster but the 16X10 is plenty for scale flight. Iset my timer for 9 minutes and typically land with 30% left in the packs this config, does not give you out of sight vertical performance nor does it provide super short takeoffs. It does give good speed and scale performance climb is solid though after about 600 to 700 feet if you do not level out you will stall and spin. The 110 could fly the plane on 10S but Ibelieve that it would get very hot while the 160 on mine comes down warm on cooler days it comes down almost at air temp.

Later you wrote me that you use 22x10??
I think it should burn your motor, when I use "ecalc" online calculator and input parameters it shows me 207 amps, and factory recomend maximum 78amps 20 SEC..

Hi,
here are some more pictures of my La-5FN.
I started the opening of the canopy, so I made a groove for the rail. I also prepared the nose part for the scale exhaust tubes.
I made a exhaust tubes from the paper, I hope, it will be good.

In the last two pictures is the result of the few hours of the working on the exhaust tubes.

Just a quick pop in here, sorry Prekin.
Svrco: I think LA7Flier ment to say is he flies on 6 cells, not 12, as he flies his two packs in parallel. Putting cells in parallel, just lets you fly longer, more gas in the tank. But the power calculation is for 6 cells, say, 6 X 4 volts= 24 volts times amp draw 60?= 1440 watts of power.

12 cells in serieswould be would be a massive boost in power and the motor may not handle the large prop then.

I will be running a Scorpon 5525-225 kv motor spinning a 3 blade 20x12 prop on 6 cells in a 80" Platt Me 109, and it will have good scale power.

Me 410: thanks for your comment, but I now that is not possible to fly with 1440 watts warbird of 8+ kg... At first moment I think like you, but when I calculate, I knew that is not possible...
LA7flier, thanks for your correction, now is all clear I listen your advices and give up from this model, now I decide to buy something smaller like esm spitfire 72.5"...
In every case I think you force your motor toooo much with that size of prop it is mirracle that you are not burn your motor...

I have done a fair bit of electric flying and came to belive that one should have about 100 watts per pound of airplane, this gives good performance , talking about warbirds of course.

But as I got into larger electrics (60") wingspan, it seemed that I could get away with less and still have good performance.

I am now getting into large electrics (80" span ) and am finding that things change alittle.
The big low KV motors have huge torque and can spin a large near scale prop with alot of pitch very well. The prop does not have to spin very fast. It's similar to a gear reduction on a gas engine, lower RPM but a much bigger prop.

So it seems that a large slow turning prop can be more efficent than a smaller faster turning prop. The volumn of air moved seems to be the key. I am no expert though.

In the case of these low KV motors, If you go with a low cell count ( LiPo ) like 6 cells, ( the E-flite 160 is rated for 9-10 cells and 65 amp draw. ) You just put on the biggest prop that will not draw over the 65 amps at full throttle. The motor will be happy and you may be suprised how good the performance is with the lower RPM and lower watt number.

My friend had a 78" Me109 at approx 17-18 LB with a Scorpion 5525 -225 motor on 6 cells turning a three blade 20 X 14 ! I don't think the amp draw was over 65 amps so the max watts would be around 1500. It flew great, had lots of vertical, could do great big loops, etc.

BTY, I have the ESM 72" Spitfire, it flies fantastic, I power it with a Saito 120 four stroke. I love it.
Making it electric would be tricky though, as it has a long cowl and you would need to get your batteries forward, you may have to cut away a big part of the firwall to have your batteries fit. As they may not fully fit under the cowl? And you need to make a hatch for quick battery changes. But with thought and work it could be done.

Here are some more pictures. I´ve just done the rails and started with the instalation of the TY´s plane cockpit. I hope, it will be wihtout any problem. But I find the little mistake. The gun sight from TY´s is different from the real gun sight PBP-1. So I will make it on my own.

I´ve started the works with semi- scale instrument panel. TY´s model makes instrument panel for the La-7. La-7´s instrument panel is different from the La-5´s one. However, you can find many types of the instrument panel in La-5s, because it was produced in 3 or more factories.
Next step was the gun sight, which wasn´t very scale, so I adjust it, this time.
Does anybody has some good pictures of the Lavochkin instruments? I need it for my instrument panel.

After some day I´m back. Now I´m painting the cockpit. I used three layers of the paint. Some parts are not already done, so don´t afraid of the painting.
In the few days I have to prepared the instruments for the instrument panel.

By the way, Basel is very nice city. I was in Basel last summer. It was short visit, because most of the time I spent in Olten.

In post # 669 you show the insrurment panels cut out in the 3 third & 4th photo. In the 4th photo the panel has rased spots to simlate screws for the instruments. How did you raised the panel to simlate the screws? What you have done is top notch.

It is pretty easy. I made the instrument panel from 1,2mm PVC. I pushed the "rivets and screws" out of the panel by a spike.
Tomorrow I will upload some more picture as a sample.

here are the pictures how I made the rivets on the instrument panel. You need some spike and one piece of the wood. The wood shouldn´t be too hard. When you would push the spike into the instrument panel, be careful, very easily you can make a hole. As you can see in the pictures.

Works go on. Today I´ve done the upper part of the instrument panel and the cockpit part. I added some labels around the control sticks and also some necessary rivets on the pilot´s seat.

Now I have some other question. Does anybody know about some good pilot, which fits into this ESM Lavochkin?
