Oldtimer I have the 74" one with a G38 and mine is just like you described. Mine came in at almost 20lbs and takes off slower and lands slower and easier than I would have thought from a plane almost 5lbs over what the "plans" call for. I would almost say it floats. It flys great and my throws are less than what was called for. I have my cg set in front of the mark also, but I like my warbirds a little nose heavy. I am thinking of getting the large one for a project and using a twin or getting a radial for it. Congrats on the maiden.

jimkron 02-24-2015 06:30 AM

Congrats oldtimer. She does fly nice. Curious, what kind of field are you flying off of....grass, cement, dirt, asphalt? With no head wind, it takes a good 450 feet to land her safely on our astroturf runway.

Congrats on the successful maiden oldtimer!
Cant wait to finish fine tuning ours and let it rip this spring.

oldtimer4759 02-25-2015 05:39 PM

hello Jim,
we are lucky, we have a good grass strip, had a second flight so far, gave the engine a bit of a tune, it went well, better than the first flight. I havent noticed the wheels coming out of the wells with the stock ESM air retracts, the struts work as I taxi it around, so the springs are good, (there are no up locks on the retracts) just air pressure.
I only used half flap for the second landing, it still wanted to float a bit, but didnt run very far once it touched down, so far I am very happy with the model and the equipment I have used.
I had the smaller ESM version, it went well but I had flutter problems in the tail area, wasnt nice, did some damage when it bellied in, but the new owner is just about ready to fly it again, I have the servo´s under the tailplane on this one,

Oldtimer.

jimkron 02-25-2015 11:33 PM

Ditto...I put a servo on each elevator half...I would love to fly off grass.

oldtimer4759 03-03-2015 09:05 PM

G´day all,
I have 6 flights on the Corsair now, very happy with it, worked out the landings, the engine is getting better with each flight, very nice to fly, looks great in the air. all I have done so far is cut back the Elevator throws a bit, rudder is next, mine doesnt need all that much to keep it straight on take off.
Oldtimer.

Yep she is a sweetie.
I discovered after her last flight Id stripped the rudder servo, apart from an erratic take off, no rudder obviously, all was normal.
good bird.

As requested a shot of the dummy radial.Ive fitted a spektrum telemetry heat sensor to the head and have been monitoring the in cowl temperatures before i take her to flight.First tests are looking good with dummy engine on.
I think Ive finished weathering the corsair .I like the more used look on my aircraft, though not to every bodys taste. The last item to make is a 3 bladed static scale prop for photo purposes, then done.

Cheers Nudge

Great look! What paint did you use to repaint the cowl and repair the wing?

This video is from the guy who bought my Corsair last year. This is his maiden voyage. He managed to get the video I never could. Visual quality isn't great, but the sound comes thru nicely! He changed out the pneumatics to electric and that's about the only change he made.

This is the plane, for new viewers.

Fly2XS 03-25-2015 11:39 AM

Nice sound to that engine! I can't wait to fire mine up!
That first flight looked a little pitch sensitive. Tail heavy?

LBJ 03-25-2015 01:27 PM

Shawn installed his own Rx of course and set the throws. He may need some more expo or less throw on the up elevator to keep the pitchiness down. When I flew her, she was CG'd right on the money first timeout. Nice takeoff for his first flight, I'd say. The Keleo exhaust ring adds to that great sound, no doubt.

Sounds great. Flew nicely. Congrats.

Hello Corsair fans!

I had a successful flight with my second Corsair this weekend.

The center-section is reinforced with carbon fiber cloth from the insides this time.

I cut out the radiator inlets. That made it possible, using a stick with some cloth on it to enter the wing from the radiator inlet, and

-Cover the lower panel, and the upper panel with carbon.(On the inside)
-Laminate the main spar front side with carbon.

Next I laminated the main spar from the back-side as well.

So, the center section seems pretty strong now. Next I made myown radiator inlets and glued them in place.

Quite happy now! :)

G,day, from the land down under guys. My first post on the Bent Wing Bird thread. Thanks to all those who have boldly gone before & all there input. Especially STOAT may he R.I.P. he shared so much & seemed such a top bloke. I haven't read every post, its a marathon, but I'm about two thirds through.
Congrats on your second 1st maiden KWIK, thats commitment, to do it all again & shows how much you like this aircraft despite its hiccups in quality here n there. Credit to you.
I have a question for you KWIK if you don't mind, in post 387 you talk about dropping the scissor down on the Robart 148,s, I have the same gear,
what did you then pack the leg with as its narrower there than the original position ? As a plumber i,m thinking of some fairly soft copper tube dissected to fit.
did you put a spacer on the inside of the gear to make up for the now softer extended spring ?
any problems with them rotating in a crossed up landing ?
how are they holding up or did you upgrade / replace ?
Thanks in advance.
My pearl of wisdom is, I,ve been using a multi purpose tool today to open up the slots in the co-joined flaps for the joiner piece, bit noisy but quick & works a treat.
Then fitted them up with a drop of medium Cyno on each hinge to check the movement & free play before committing to the epoxy. http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/atta...mentid=2108359

Hello there banknyank, I used some leftover from another gear. An insert.

You could use a strip of some metal, and just fold it around the leg. Aluminum for example. Maybe 0.5mm thick ?

It has never rotated, no, so it is keeping up fine. :)

BANK N YANK 07-10-2015 07:41 PM

Thanks KWIK, pleased to know the Robarts are still doing a fine job. The Robart wheels look the business, the ones with the Aluminium hubs, very pricey tho. Has anyone come up with a similar alternative.
I,m putting a CH Ignition, gas conversion onto my Saito 450, it will likely loose a bit of power, but be a lot cheaper on fuel. Haven't ran it on gas yet, they do sound awesome on the you tube clips.

Extended the legs on the Robart 148,s this afternoon, by 25 mm & realised the wheels off my shiney plastic covered Aeroworks Mustang
are also 4 1/2 inches, so they fit the Corsair, looking good on the landing gear front now.

I have about 15 flights on mine now. It needed a little right trim and I really enjoy that it can handle a lot of flap without becoming unstable...it just slows down. These are the only action shots so far.

I have the Robart alu wheels too. Pricey? I don't know...they are after all made of aluminum............ I like them a lot.

Just swallow hard and click "buy". The sick feeling in your stomach when you click "Buy" will go away after an hour or so.

:) :) :)

tevans55 07-14-2015 06:30 PM

Thanks Captain Ron. Just go fly her...you'll be surprised how nicely it handles on the ground and in the air. I have to admit I was shocked at how easy this plane was to fly, including take offs and landings.

I have the aluminum wheels from Sierra Precision. They seemed a little pricey when I bought them but they sure look and work great. (in the photos above)

Or you can spend a bunch of money on a lathe and mill, and make your own.http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/atta...mentid=2109237

BANK N YANK 07-16-2015 03:19 AM

The photos look great Tevan, pleased your enjoying the flying, I had a 72 inch Corsair years ago & it wasn't any light weight, it flew as well as everyone on here seems to relate this one does.
The wheels I am going to use are Aluminium hubs & will do very nicely, there branded as Aeroworks but look exactly the same as the Robarts to me. Would be nice to have a lathe Orion, but sadly ----. They look very nice.

The last week or so I,ve been experimenting with mechanical type closing methods for the main gear doors, NO servo,s. After several attempts at various methods & materials, I think I have settled on a reasonable answer.
Very fine piano wire strung under the centre of the wheels to close the doors & to a small degree help hold them open. With a spring on each door to do the majority of the opening part. Its all just lashed together still, but now I,ve proven it works & is pretty simple &
foolproof as far as I can tell I,ll carry on with more permanent stuff on the doors.
