new to the hobby
ok i wanted a destroyer but heard they hard to build, low runtime and are bad for beginners so i want to build a battleship. were do i start? do i just buy a hull already made and put the electronics into it or what. can i build my own hull for less money or is it to hard. websites for how to build and setup guns to get me started would be great.

Lets take a look at what building a hull requires. There are two types of hull: fiberglass and wood. For a wood hull, you start with a good plan set that has rib sections. You may need to adjust the rib spacing to be legal. Then you do a lot of cutting and glueing and planking. This part is very time consuming. Then you can install the guts and go battle. For fiberglass, you generally buy a hull from a supplier (though you can make one yourself). You only need to cut sections out for proper rib spacing. Then you can install the guts and go battle. Obviously, fiberglass is much faster way to build a ship, though some people, including myself, prefer wooden hulls.
Building rotating cannons requires a machine lathe and mill. I'm fortunate that a fellow club member used to be a machinist and maintains a small workshop in his garage with all these tools and lets me and others work there. If you don't have the tools or a helpful club member who does, you'll need to buy them from [link=http://www.bderc.com/]BDE[/link] (which is a good idea anyway, because BDE makes good cannons).

Torpedoes in Big Gun RC warship combat are not self-propelled, exploding projectiles. They are a battleship-caliber gun that's fixed off either side to deal underwater damage at close range. Basically, they are the RC warship combat equivalent of HMS Victory's 64-lb carronades, in that they are very effective in close-quarters combat, but incapable of longer range fire.
Do you have any idea which battleship you want to build? Its hard to go wrong with a battleship.

RE: new to the hobby
I'm only slightly less new to the hobby than you but I did just have the same questions as you several weeks ago.
First, find a club near you and find out if they are "Big Gun" or "Fast Gun", and what their rules are, those are probably going to be the rules you will end up building to. If they are Fast Gun (or even Big gun because a lot of parts are interchangeable such as hulls, decks, radio's) check out [link]http://www.battlersconnection.com/[/link] they have a good selection/reputation and have most things you will need to get started.
But the most important part is just reading, and lots of it, read ever link you can get your hands on.
