Default Have you ever restored a battleship?

I have a really old R/C destroyer from the late 60's/early 70's made entirely of balsa wood. It's 65" long, and I've figured it to be approximately 1/92 scale. The deck is warping and cracked, it's made of balsa. One of my questions is, are battleship decks usually made of some other type of wood? If so, I want to transplant the superstructure onto new wood. Also, what paints do you guys use? It needs a total repaint....

The main deck on my USS Missouri is aircraft plywood you can find at your local hobby shop. This should give it a sturdy place to rest the superstructure. As for the paint give it a good sanding to get all of the bump and dips out and paint it like any other wood project. Fiberglass or epoxy the outside and inside, sand, apply primer for paint, then what ever color's you want it to be. Also want a few coats of clear paint for protection.

Great info, thank you. I will look for some thin ply. What type/brand of paint do you typically use on a wooden warship? I'm assuming you airbrush it?
