Default Cat 5 Tornado!

I have my Tornado epx pro ready for 3s lipo power.

I upgraded the shock towers to the billet alloy ones.

I added 2 heat sinks to the motor.

I installed a 8E fan to blow onto the motor. Its mounted with servo mounts.

I moved the ESC to the top plate, and re-wired the fan to be powered off the reciever.

Last, I put on traxxas 2.2 rims with proline dirt hawg tires. These do decent offroad, and wont fall apart when used on pavement.

I will be testing it with the new skylipo 3s 5000mah hardcased pack that just arrived tomorrow. Cant wait to see the speed. I will also check the temps.

Ok
tested the tornado today on 3s.

Speed was amazing. I even pulled a wheely!

I do have an issue tho. Im not sure why, but a kept loosing either steering or throttle. I think its cause I was trying to power 2 fans off the reciever.
I think the bec on the reciever couldnt handle the draw.

I could keep my finger on the motor/esc...so temps never got more than 120-130.

Its possible the ESC just cant handle the power. I know I have run 3s on this system before....but the sky lipo Im using now is a 60c burst-30c constant. So the lipo can put out more punch than ones Ive used in the past.

The larger tires also put more strain on the motor...thus more draw.

I may have to upgrade the BL system. But Im not giving up on the little ezrun ESC just yet. I have a few ideas to try still.

Anyway...watch the vid. I never even gave it 100% throttle!

Default RE: Cat 5 Tornado!

well, did more testing last night.

I wired up the 2 fans to a seperate 2s 1000mah lipo pack (rx pack)

I didnt have any glitching, but then I only got to do 3-4 high speed passes before I heard a bad sound.

It sounded like the dredded spur gear strip sound.

But when I pulled the cover off the spur gear was fine (I had forgotten it was hardend steel)

The pinion gear on the other hand had only 2 teeth left!

Ive been in the hobby for 7 years. Ive had some pinions that were brass which got worn down over time, but this was the 1st time I have seen a pinion gear have the teeth sheared right off!

That novatech 3300kv motor on 3s packs a punch.

The buggy pulled a wheely at over 25mph! The rear of my wing has road rash! (it acts alittle like a wheely bar...lol)

So ill have to wait till a new pinion gear comes till I can know for sure if I have sorted out that glitching problem.

I talked with a buddy who agreed that the ezrun esc blinks red if it overheats. I think that blinking green is what it does if it doesnt have a RX signal. So I think the fans overloaded the BEC on the rx and thats what caused the servo and throttle to cut out on me.

When I get a new pinion gear Ill drive it enough to know for sure. I will also take some temp readings, tho Im pretty sure they are low enough.

I will also double check the punch control and braking force on the ESC. I had them set a tad lower when running 2s (From stock) but Ill need to put them down more for 3s.

I just got a tornado epx. But i thought the max it could handle was a 2s 5000 lipo
It seems u just upgraded the fan and beat sink.
This stock ezrun ESC and 3300kv motor handles a 3s?!?

Amazing!
Why dont u out some proline road tires?

yes, the stock esc/motor are rated for 3s lipo. the only thing that wont handle the extra voltage is the fan on the esc. the fan gets its power from the esc in stock form, and going to a 3s lipo increases the power to the fan beyond what it is meant to handle. I ran the wire from the fan to the 3ch on the receiver, so it gets the proper voltage no matter what battery I use.
The heat sink on the motor is not totally needed, especially if you stay on the street. for offroad use, a fan is recommended.

The Tornado EPX Pro is only rated out of the box for a 2s lipo battery, adding a 3rd cell will void the warranty.

they say that because of the fan, it will burn out if you use a 3s without changing it to be powered off the receiver. And naturally, cutting the fan's wires and adding a connector so it can be run off the receiver would void the warranty.

Actually we say that because the esc, motor and gearing are designed for 2s lipo.
