Updated Redcat Sumo thread
1. I own 2 team losi micro's, The Micro T, and The Micro Raminator. Stock out of the box how do these new SUMO's compare as far as speeds, handling, and durability compared to the stock Losi Micro's.
2. I also own a kyosho mini z Monster truck which runs on regular batteries like the SUMO's, how do the mini Z monster and SUMO's compare in the same ways as above?
3. OK, NOW, The reason I'm drawn to the new SUMO's is that they are similiar in size to the micro's I already own, BUT, SUMO"S ARE 4X4 unlike the Losi's and the Mini Z. I don't know much about REDCAT products, but the fact that they are 4x4 makes me really want to get one. I am hoping someone of you out there have played around with the others I mentioned and can tell me how they stack up to each other STOCK, and perhaps Modified. I'm curious as well to the durability of the SUMO's because of the fact they are 4x4. That makes them more complex to the 2wd losi's and Kyosho, the more there is the more there is to possibly go wrong.
So I hope to hear from some of you and hope i can get some answers and insight on this issue. Thanks In Advance.......
So far, Redcat sumo with bearings 180 motor, heatsink and custom 4.8v 1500mah pack.
Losi micro highroller with micro t threaded axels, bearings rear aluminum hubs and varios tires, ramminator, monster and wheelie bar!
Nice, forums have always been legit and informative so since I bought myself a 1/24 sumo and a 1/36 losi HR not to long ago I'll post some tips pics and my overall 2 cents.
So I have to say at first out of the box I had the most fun with the highroller, mostly cause it came with everything. One con on the sumo, its dual AA battery saddle-bags. Its a great place for the weight to be balanced but... AAs? So I got creative and snapped a 4 cell 1500mah in half, just folded the tab that conncets the pack in a series kinda like bending the tab on a soda pop can till it snaps off. Then I bent them up a bit to have a good contact surface. Then I took a razor knife and some pliars and removed the groove of plastic in the AA saddlebags that seperates the intended single cell design along with the connector tabs towards the rear or the truck. I had an extra spring laying around and added it on one side so it could hit the contact surface on the custom batt pack. Since I used a JR batt pack I got a female hitech connecter with wires and soldered it to the board, its a tight fit so I got lighter gauge wires. Now there already is a wire that connects the saddle bags back to a series so in order to charge the battery pack, I leave it in the truck, or lay the two halfs of the pack so the exposed tabs hit each other.

Now for highroller vs sumo with 4.8v the losi is a bit faster than the sumo. Although the sumos packing 1500mah so it runs for 30-40 min on average. I had alot of fun with the sumo mobbin through piles of dead leafs and skiddn around in the dirt and gravel, all stock. I had to run it to the max to see if it could take it, and it did for the first 5 times running it. The main stepped gear right off the main drive shaft that turns the rear diff stripped out. So I got the extra gear set for 7 bucks and shimmed it to fit closer to the rear diff and that seems to work fine, esp with the bearings I cant say enough that the first upgrade is always bearings right thurr.
After breaking in the new brushed motor in water/alcohol, slappin the bearings in and fixing the stepped main gear this thing is fast! Id say 20+ mph in the gear set I got it had a large and medium motor mounted gear set,pinion gear i guess, so I used the large one its to fast for the house!
I was out running it today, hit a manhole lid that was sticking out of the ground head on at full speed, oh man I thought it was done for! Turns out the motor just popped out of the plastic brace that holds it in. squezzed that in and it fired right up. Now if you have read this far i assume you own or plan to purchase one of these micro 4x4s, if you do mods are a MUST, pretty much all that I have done, but now that I have I can say this rc is a load of fun, all other suspension parts are durable. If you get the urge to rampage through the dirt (Its hard I still do!) take the time to clean the rear diff compartment, or seal it but I like to take things apart so ceaning is my choice.
Same time I revived the sumo I bought a 2s 7.4v 250mah batt for the micro highroller thats normally an upgrade for the losi 4x4 sct, it fits good n tight, and holy cow man this thing is almost to fast! So the first 5 min of blasting around the slick basketball court concrete, im pulling a sideways drift and hit a 1/2" crack in the concrete and the rear right hub snaps in half. So I ordered aluminum rear hubs axles n nuts and some bigger tires.
I have customer who brought one in and he claims that at times, it won't give full steering in one direction on the other.
- I checked the trim, and the alignment IS off with the radio dial moved about 1/4 to the right - (obviously pull servo and center it, align servo horn, and re-install)
- He claimed that when he adjusted the EPA on the controller, that giving more or less throw didn't make a difference. (When he brought it in, I tested it, adjusted to max and min and it DID make a difference.
(Typical situation) customer describes a situation and it works fine or doesn't make the noise that they initial complain about. Does anyone else get intermittent steering glitches?

The neighbors and I have10 Sumos andhave a pretty good amount of run time, some of it pretty rough.
I have a truck with the following mods(with comments):
- Bearings - the most important upgrade
- Radline oil filled shocks - meh. Wouldn't do it again.
- Steel axles - gets rid of some slop, makes changing wheels easier, but I've broken a few wheels by overtightening the nuts.
- Radline motorpack - slower than the OE motor. Don't.
Steering knuckles are the weak point.We've broken dozens of them.Stock up on plastic replacements or buy the aluminum upgrades. The package with stock replacements often has 2 right or left knuckles rather than one of each, so never order just one. Redcat will replace them but you don't want to wait.
Iwant to say we get at least a half hour or so on a charge. I think my batteries are rated at 2700mah. The radio uses 8AA.

i just purchased a Sumo Rc truck and am new to this hobby. i am upgrading the bearings, 180 Motor and heat sink this week. Can anyone advise me on what is worthwhile to modify next? thanks
modding it to run lipo is a bit tricky, but ditches alot of weight and thus increases speed/acceleration.
its also possible to run it off a pair of losi 4.8v nimh packs in parrellel (for better runtime)
