redcat gears - helical vs straight
Any one know which part is newer, better or stronger:
Helical gears 85720h and 85719h
Straight gears 85720 and 85719
These fit the hurricane, monsoon and avalanche, and maybe other models.
Thanks

Three months later !!!
Helical gears are used because they are quieter. The point of contact moves across the gear face.
Straight gears use the entire gear face; ergo, they are stronger.

Thanks for the input PA.
That all makes sense for full sized cars, but does a noisy/strong straight gear ever get re-engineered to be a helical gear set for RC.
I would not think that was Redcats way of doing things.
Conversely, why would they go from helical gears to straight. Unless there were strength issues.
Still does not explain why they would ever start with a helical gear set in the first place.
I have helical gear in both my cars and have no issues.

All my gear experience has been autos and locomotives.
RedCat using using helical gears is a bit of a mystery.
Straight gear housings can be lighter because straight gears dont have lateral thrust.
It could be that is what was available at the right price.

I agree, this is probably the biggest factor, availability for the right price.
Just to end this thread up with a sort of answer, I ended up looking up all the parts and all the vehicles involved, and it goes something like this:
All old XP models used straight cut pinions for all vehicle types.
All current XTR/XTE models use helical cut for all vehicle types.
The XTR buggy and truggy (Hurricane/Monsoon) are listed as using straight cut and helical, and I have to assume they transitioned to the XTR before they changed the gear set. XTE's came later and are not listed as using straight gears.
Hope this helps any future users with the same
