hi my name is eric i just recently bought a red cat volcano stx and i wne tout and bought a tigerdrive system for it and even before that when i would start the car the wheels would spin like the clutch is always on does anyone know what to do. thanx

Maybe the idle it too high?? When you put it on the ground after starting does it stall? can you start it on the ground or does it just stall?

Either that or the clutch spring is broken...that has been happening to quite a few people.

i cant start it on ground the wheels move and if i try to start it on ground it stalls out i am going to take it apart and look through it tomorrow i guess is the only thing i can do.

My son is now having this same problem with his Himoto Eldorada ... and i think I broke it for him (oops).

The symptoms are the same as described in this thread ... we can start it up when it's sitting on blocks, and the wheels are constantly engaged. If he brakes a bit or we set it down on the ground, it stalls.

You mention 'clutch spring' ... can I purchase one of those from RedcatRacing? Do you know what part number or what the specific part description is?

first try and dissasemble the clutch, and if the spring broke from the little hook thing, just use the last turn of the spring and shape it in the same way as the other hook on the other end. hope this makes sense, mine broke and i did just what i described, and now it's working better then before. good luck

Thanks for the recommendation ... I am going to give that a try.

The replacement part is #02048-Clutch slice, on the RedcatRacing.com site. I've attached a picture from their site below. The picture doesn't accurately depict what the clutch actually looks like ... it's actually two pieces that 'hinge'. When the centrifugal force (speed of the engine) overcomes the strength of the spring, the clutch 'slices' expand and engage with the 'Engine Gear set' (part #08011 ...also attached below).

You can got to your LHS and buy a replacement. Just bring your old spring and clutch shoes and they cam match it up for 3-7 dollars...
I got a heavier spring to increase take off speed and it's lasted weeks now. I post a PN from hobbytown in another thread.

i am having the same problem with my stx. but now my spring is hanging out. is this easy to fix??

Not too hard, take out the motor (from the mounts not from the frame on the bottom otherwise you will loose your gear mesh setting which seems to be a problem by reading other peoples posts). unhook the throttle linkage from the carb and unbolt the exhaust pipe. take off the clutch bell from the front of the engine by taking out the screw from the front. take the old spring out and put new in, i would suggest buying a traxxas spring from a local hobby shop or online, the redcat springs seem a little inferior. If the truck is fairly new dont bother changing the clutch shoes.

Im in the process of taking off my clutch spring, but i cant get the clutch bell off. does it just pull off?

allen head screw on the tip of the clutch bell...... i just run mine without the spring lol.... i just start it on a block then throw it down and just aim it lol

Well, it pretty much is a order from the chinese... its where the parts are coming from. Their english is terrible lol.

i got it off and fixed the spring. i reused the old one. now the carb. needs tuned. i got it running when i give it alittle gas it dies. i tried it agian and it died. does it sound like its getting to much gas or not enough?

sounds like the low end setting is too rich, too much gas, lean it an 1/8 turn run for 45 seconds , let it idle and try taking off again.

My son has the Eldorada model, we have been through 2 clutch springs, 2 steering arms, 1 door type mount?? (not sure what they are really called) so far.
Oh ya and the chienglish manual does make it difficult to figure out just what all the little parts are. Engine seems strong enough for us newbies.
Over all having a blast with the little 1/10, gives the neighbors Savage a run for his money.

use a traxxas spring for the clutch, you wont have to change it for a while, i change the a arms and shock towers on all my offroad cars all the time. it is pretty fast though. it seems to be as fast as my hpi nitro mt, at least until the spur gear stripped.
