Not too familiar with the Lightning, but since the Tornado XL comes with the .16, I would imagine that you could bolt up either one of the redcat .18's into it...Either start another thread with this, or PM top speed toys, or go to his website topspeedtoys.com or try Clermontmotorsports.com (can never keep straight whether it's chubbysuncle or chubbysdad) I'm sure they have "contact me" info there too. I'm sure they could tell you for sure and are both great places to buy parts...

Rooster,

All you need is the 2 speed trans. item 06034 (also 02076).
And clutch bell, item 02023.

Mark

Red...It's up to you...Now that there's more information on here about setting it up properly as to not eat up gears it might not be too bad, and it depends on what type of terrain or course (if there is one) that you'll be running on...I just took my two speed out a few weeks ago because although I didn't have issues with it (other than clutch bell wearing), I had heard a lot of horror stories on here and felt safer switching...Also, I run on tighter and looser terrain, so there was no need for the second gear for me, that and until after I got my 1 speed, nobody had figured aftermarket clutch bells to run on the 2 speed, and I wanted to change my ratios for terrain...

thanks for all the replys. the reason i even asked to switch to a 2 speed tranny was because iv gone thru 4 gears already and have driven this car very little (iv only used half a gallon of gas) what do i have to do to stop grinding gears? im just looking for anything that will let me drive it more than one day without having to repair it lol so far this is the only problem iv had other than the clutch spring breaking

Speaking of the HPI 2 speed setup, since I didn't want to lay down the whole 50 bucks for the entire set up, I instead opted to just use the clutch bell since mine conveniently snapped in half last time i used it.

Here are the parts I bought:
[link=http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LXCLR9&P=7]22 Tooth Gear[/link]
[link=http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LXDHM0&P=7]17 Tooth Gear[/link]
[link=http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LXCLR2&P=M]Threaded Clutchbell[/link]

The reasoning behind the gear choices is this: The stock setup for our clutchbells is 16/21. Unfortunately Hpi doesn't make a threaded 16 tooth gear with the same pitch to fit that clutch bell, but they do make a 17. So since i had to go one tooth up with first gear I'd have to do the same with second gear. Otherwise when the car shifted it would shred everything to hell. I'm going to lose a little acceleration because of it but more top end is always fun... wooo

Everything was a direct swap, it all fit perfectly. Even used the same bearings, washers and end screw.
Another plus is that the colored gears look cool
I'm not going to get a chance to run the car tonight but I should be able to sometime this weekend. I'll be sure to let you all know how it goes.
There's also a little picture there of the screened window mod i did.... i thought it looked cool, and i'm sure it's somewhat functional.

Thanks buddy.

Here's another picture with the engine installed. Looking at it further it looks like it may need some adjustment to fit, especially if you have a newer post that holds the upper plate on. But fortunately for me one of my other clutch bells already ate away the extra plastic on there so it fits pretty nicely...

If you want a replacement clutch for these, you can use the A885 racing clutch from the HPI RS4. The best thing is it fits dtraight on and because ofits design it doesn't need the e clip.

I have one in my buggy and I have put more the 20 tanks throught it. They are a little pricey at $19, but it sure beats replacing the spring all the time with the standard clutch.
