Wheels spinning on startup
Hi i'm just about as new as you can get to nitro rc, and i just started my volcano, and right off the start, all the wheels started spinning
just wondering if theres any things that need to be adjusted to get it at a normal idle

RE: Wheels spinning on startup
Just went and adjusted my throttle, the motor sounded better, but the wheels still moved, then it died, when i tried to start it up again it the pull starter wasnt as smooth, so i didnt bother to try again in risk of breaking something else
So i guess it's probably the clutch spring, so i'll go around the forum and check if i can find a decent way to fix it

yeah blue, traxxas 4146x has worked for me for the last 4 months. MRWhiz, just use the spring not the shoes they are too small and wont work. make sure the clasps of the spring end on the center of the shoe not the end so when they open the clasp is not on the shoe if you know what i mean.

RE: Wheels spinning on startup
ok, i tried re using the spring yesterday, but the wheels were still moving on startup, plus, when i tried opening up the throttle when going down the street, it didnt seem to go any faster when i gave it more juice.
i figured the spring had gone again, but i took it apart and it was still on
Any more help would be very appriciated

RE: Wheels spinning on startup
Well the first problem regarding your wheels spinning on start up could probably be fixed by turning in your throttle idle screw. That's the one located right under the airfilter. Turn it clockwise to close it up.
Take the airfilter off and, while the car is at idle, look to see that the carb opening is about a mm wide. That should get your wheels to stop spinning.
As for your car not going any faster you may need to tune it a little bit. Is there plenty of smoke coming out of the exhaust when you're running? If so you're probably running too rich and need to turn the high speed needle clockwise to lean out the mixture. If there's no smoke at all you're running way too lean and you really need to richen up the mixture by turning the screw out.
Hope that helps. Let us know.

Also check the throttle trim on the controller. OH and the throttle servo. My son broke the mounting tabs on the throttle servo[&:]( I have NO idea how!) and the throttle would not open all the way. It's a long shot but????

RE: Wheels spinning on startup
Well, it was fixed. I had it all nice and tuned. I started it today, no problems, but it stalled while i was driving it (which it was doing alot when i ran it before), and i went to start it again, and my wheels were spinning. So i figured the clutch spring was broken, so i opened it up, and it was fine. But the clutch shoes and the inside of the bell were all rugged and scratched up. I think i'm going to get a new clutch all together. What will work with my volcano?

RE: Wheels spinning on startup
usually nitro engines stall under load when they are to lean, turn the high end needle 1/2 turn counter clockwise. Maybe your spring is stretched out from re using it when trying to make a loop. when you put the spring on is it hard to get on or does it go on real easy? the shoes and the inside of the clutchbell should be scratched up, this happens when they touch each other. get the traxxas 4146x spring, its like $7, dont use the shoes that come with it, but it will solve your clutch spring breakage problem.
looking at your picture above, you cant use that spring, its stretched to far out.

RE: Wheels spinning on startup
yeah, i got the traxxas spring, its what ive been using, and its been working fine, and its still very tight. I just dont understand, if my engine is running lean enough to stall, why is the clutch engaging?

RE: Wheels spinning on startup
the clutch engages by the speed of the motor, the more rpm's the more the spring will expand and make the clutch shoes engage with the inside of the clutch bell. Maybe your idle is set too high? The lean or rich setting has nothing to do with the clutch engaging, the engine's speed has to do with it.

i am not sure what your problem is exactly, if you start and hold in the air, the tires spin? what happens when you put it on the ground? is the engine at an idle speed (a few rpm above stalling) or is it screaming?
