Default Pull start must go, too much pain, help!!!!!!!!!!!! Update

Hi

Quick question on roto starters.
Does anyone have any idea what roto start would be able to fit and start the hurricane pro. I had my cane for less
than a week and that pull start gets on my nerve. I have bliters between my fingers from pulling that darn thing. How about a starter box does anyone have one for their
hurricane XP or Pro I really need something other than the pull start.

I've seen post about the HPI roto start fitting the tornado and volcano but no Hurricane.

Just looking for answers. any help would be greatly appreciated

Regards WK

I'll double check the electric starter we carry will fit your engine.
If you get the distance from center to center on the bolt hole and it's 32mm
then I think it will work for you. The starter box fits both 1/10 and 1/8 scale redcats.

That's odd man, It really shouldn't take that many pulls to get the thing started.
With my .18 engine I can usually get it started up with about 3-5 pulls on a cold start and even less if I've been running it for a while.
Be sure to check your glow plug.
Another trick that I think really helps is putting a drop or two of fuel directly into the carb. when you go to start it up for the first time. Just be sure not to flood the engine
I wish I could help you with a part number for a rotostart but I honestly don't know what's compatible.

Mark sorry for my ignorance. When you said center to center do you mean the bolt holes distant from each other when measured in an X pattern or a square pattern.

Thanks

I don't know the reason that is but it was doing the same thing so i change glow plug igniter to a fully charge one and it would take a while to start.
I cover the muffler and prime it and it
would sometime start right up and some times it wouldn't. I don't know, but I'm not giving up on it. I was abit bumded i did not get to finish setting it up but hey things happened, and you move on. hopefully I get the parts to fix the control arm and have a go at it again.

you might not be priming it enough.
i figured out that when you hold fingure over exhaust and pull.
pull til it gets hard to pull, then take fingure off and fire it up.
my .18 takes about 4 pulls to prime and then fires up on the next pull.

We should be ok, according to the manual on the electric starter.
Two things to consider... 1) is replacement parts for these. We currently don't have them but are working with the supplier to get them soon. 2) you'll need a battery pack and charger.
These are cool but can break if not used properly.

I'm just trying to help out not just trying to make a $$$$ off ya but the starter box is the way to go.

Good luck with the starter box man. I've never seen one in action before so when you get it all up and running post some pictures or something.

Yes the starter box is the way to go. I use the ofna starter box for the hurricane. Just make sure, if you keep your pull start on, the you put the car on the starter box with the bearing going the right way. make sense.

No it doesn't! Can you elaborate more on this cause I dont want screw up my engine. Are you talking about the wheel on the starter box?

You need to get an XTM .247 backplate and one-way bearing to convert the SH .28 to an HPI rotostart...been there, done that (with a Mach 427, but still an SH-made engine), huge pain in the butt doing the conversion. I'd honestly not bother.

Just looking for answers. any help would be greatly appreciated

Regards WK
I'd get a starter box. I don't have one for a 1/8 buggy...but I have one for one of my 1/10 stadium trucks. it has a pair of alligator clamps that clip to my battery terminals in my jeep (I'm gonna solder a cigarette lighter plug on it one of these days, since it has a power outlet in the cargo area) and hit the sucker, and the truck lights up

starter boxes are great. I'd use one for everything I owned if I could.

Now, here's the question:

first off, I know that big blocks are a huge PITA when yanking on the pullstart (do you have veins poppin outta your bicep yet? lol) but is it starting on the first pull? if not, an electric starter would just be a band-aid fix, so we need to address the problem of why it won't fire on the first yank.

I know SH engines can be tempermental when new...there's a LOT of pinch and, when new, they tend to be cold blooded, but if you take care of 'er, it'll last 10+ gallons before you have to replace the piston/sleeve

Hey Eric

OK let me try and explain. Normally it won't start on the first pull, if I block the muffler and prime it, the cord gets really tight then it would take about 2-3 pulls to start.
If it does not and I keep pulling, the pull start get really soft not much compression and become very easy to pull.

I hope that what I just explained makes some kind of sense.

Thanks for the help

hey warriorking,

Like Popper said check the glow plug.

Have you changed it since you broke the motor in? It's recommended.

Yea I did, actually I run about 4.5 tanks of fuel for the breakin process and I change the plug after my second tank. Oh and I had piece of crapola glow[:'(]
plug igniter that I flung so far my arm hurt. It was the one that came in the kit. That thing could not hold a charge even if it had fingers.

Well just let everyone who is interested to know the starter box looks great fit and finish is good. but thats about where all the good things end
It will not work on the hurricane Pro, the slot on the chassis is not wide enough across, so the starter wheel cannot engage the flywheel. When you press the buggy down
The starter wheel and fly wheel are about 1/4" apart. The slot on the chassis is only 1 1/2" while the starter box wheel is 2 1/2". I've added some pics hopefully they can explain better
than I can.

Ain't that a bit** ....

Sorry warriorking,

Please make arrangements to send it back to me for a full refund.
Let me know how much it cost to ship back, I'll refund that as well.

Also, we can try the electric roto starter... I have a backplate that will fit your motor.

Let me know.

Anybody need a starter box?

Hey Mark

I think I'm gonna keep it I'm sure it will come in handy one day as I will be looking at more cars. Its really nice
thou. BTW do you no if all the Cane chassis are the same if it is then it might be a good idea to let potential buyers know.
I was hoping so bad, but you can't win em all [8D] but like I said I'm gonna keep it. no biggie. I will be putting an ordering in
for the roto start maybe sunday or monday. If I decide to part with it I might put it on ebay, but as of right know it ain't going no where any time soon.

Sounds great WK, you don't have to but if you think you'll end up using it then it's all good.

Let me know if you need the roto starter, I'll set you up

Hey, I've got a question about the roto start. I bought an hpi rotostart with the t-15 motor back plate and everything fit fine.
But when i went to roto away the thing didn't have enough juice to turn my engine over.
The battery I was using was a 3000mah brand new 7.2 volt with a fresh charge... what gives?
Fortunately i bought the thing at my lhs so i took it back and ended up buying another pull start.
As much as I am beginning to hate the pull starts they come through again and again.

And about the starterbox can you put a smaller diameter wheel on it? Or possibly lower your engine somehow?
As a last resort to get it working you could always just chop away at your chassis

Well the ones I have also use a 3000mAh batt. and I've seen them in use so they turn the engine over.
My bro'n-law has a Savage and his HPI roto deal seems stronger that the one for redcats.

Maybe you got a dud, should have tried to exchange it.

Or if you need one, I'll give ya a deal.

I was thinkg about the smaller wheel but i think it probably wouldn't be able to transfer enough torque or what ever.

About lowering the engine. It would not work cause the bottom of the engine is less than an 1/8'' from the chassis.

Know chopping is a good idea but I don't have those kind of tools plus it would still need more room a couple of mounting screws are in the way so.
thats the end of that oh well.[&o]

i use the hpi backplate and rotostart on my .18 tornado xp and have no problems, i upgraded after 2 pulls on the engine when i first got it and the pullstart broke. maybe the battery or rotostart was no good, its alot easier than the pullstart.
