Thanks ehroof, I am not sure if I was careful about the placement of the clasp ... those MPI springs did not have a good clasp at the end and I think making my own could have contributed to it's early demise.

I still think I will use the 4146 or 4146x clutch spring, and maybe test out the shoes ... if they do not work, are there any other brands of shoes that I could use?

Cool thanks, did you use the shoes as well or just keep your stock ones?

Thanks Clermont

I installed the 4146x spring after lightly sanding the stock clutch shoe surfaces and saw what everyone meant when they said the Traxxas shoes are too small so I didn't bother.

I buttoned everything back up properly, and checking/re-checking the gear mesh with the new HPI 17t racing clutch bell, and after installing the new HPI header along with the RPM tuned pipe I took it for a short ride in the garage and everything is working great again. Thanks to all!

Clermont - on a side note I look forward to receiving my order ;-)

I just have to say that I have been reading posts for awhile now and I admire how everyone here is eager to help whenever problems arise. I am looking into replacing stock clutch shoes on my Volcano sv with the ones from hpi. (A886) Does anyone have information on how those would mount on the flywheel? Do you need the springs that come with the shoes? Any help would be great.
Thanks

you just have to use what comes with the setup. it eliminates the spring, you have to leave the e clip off but they do work, there is a higher stall rate with them, meaning they wont engage until a higher rpm than the stock shoes

I recently got a volcano sv 1/10 scale truck. I got it new in box from some one on ebay. I dont want to put them down or eany thing becauce they haye been supportive and helped me by sending me a new (crappy AM radio) but Idont like the radio system. Thats my fault. I Ususl fly helicopters. I 0wne about four of them. I can fly decient no pro stuff. I have owned several nitro trucks and a few electric. I am curently in process of "me be" building a street, off road, and drag track, along with a air strip beetween Jackson Tn and Dyersburg Tn. I would like to get input if eanybody in local area is interested I have about 20 or more arces avalable and good funds to do it but I could use input on alot of infg on track length on off road tracks I will put 1 track for Nascar tracks that are of scale including Taladaga,Bristal,Martinsville, etc. But the main point is the perspn that has helped me very much with this new manufacture of the volcano sv (REDCAT RACING) dont support thier product as good as rufaster.com they helped when others have not. They will help yuo in eany way they have me and if you need parts quick look them up and tell them party_ruler_dude a.k.a David sent you.

ehroof great post on clutch all i come up with is gears with wrong tooth count and do you use stock trans? someone else said locktite brngs in clutch makes sense clutch xpands brngs do to at different rates and let bell wobble i wonder if ceramic brngs.locktited in to stay put then no more variable lash clutch and gears i have a bb with tiawan vx 18 .3 big block and if they use those gears with smaller engines i feel i could go a bit taller on hi gear what do you think confusing enoughf?i dont know how forum works but a reply to green 1 would be nice thanks

Hi, thanks for the good words. You use the stock trans with the upgraded clutch bells. Dont put locktite on the bearings. You can oil them up, you can use the stock bearings. Stick to the stock gearing, dont go any taller they are tall enough as it is. hope this answered your questions.

I figured since alot of people have been asking about the upgraded clutch bell and spring i would make a post just about that.

Hpi 2 speed clutch bell for tornado xp and other 2 speeds

hpi #83069: http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin...4&I=LXCLR2&P=K
hpi #76977: http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin...4&I=LXDHM0&P=K
hpi #76982: http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin...4&I=LXCLR9&P=K

Hpi single speed clutch bell for volcano stx and other single speeds

hpi #77107: http://www.clermontmotorsports.com/s.../Detail?no=200 this is the vented racing clutch bell with bearings at a great price or http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin...?&I=LXLST9&P=7 (you can use more or less teeth, less teeth better acceleration, more teeth has more top end and faster)

clutch springs

traxxas #4146: http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin...46&FVPROFIL=++ (regular)
traxxas #4146x: http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin...=++&search3=Go (high stall, more rpm's before engaging the clutch)
Only use the springs with the traxxas setup the clutch shoes wont work

mpi #3072: http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin...?&I=LXUR89&P=7
cheaper alternative

This setup from hpi will eliminate the spring all together:
hpi #A886: http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin...?&I=LXVK12&P=7

Adjustable clutch shoes and spring
hpi #A885: http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin...=++&search3=Go
volcano single speed spur gear: #8033

Hope this helps some of you's out, i have personally used the hpi cluch bells and the traxxas 4146x spring and i am very happy with them both, the cluch bells will eliminate your problems with stripping gears so i would suggest you do it.
Fantasitc, I just read through this, good find dude. I have one question about the clutch bell, are there any other items needed for the installation or is it a drop in fit. Thanks.

If you decide on the HPI 17-T (like I have) purchase it from Clermont or AllAboutFun.

Clermont Link - http://www.clermontmotorsports.com/s.../Detail?no=200

1. It comes to you faster
2. It comes with new bearings

The install does not require any extra parts, just a drop in. While you have it off and open, look at your clutch shoes and see if they are grooved like my bro-in-laws were, if so you may want to replace them as well.

My hpi 2 speed clutch bell setup kinda moves up and down when screwed on, could i fix this by just buying some more of those thin washers and installing them...?

Not relating to this but will airlines let you take your nitro buggy on the plane? Is it hard to get it on without much hassle?
