You can just buy the multi- shaft engine. Then you will need the tmaxx manifold and a "L" shaped servo arm for the slide carb. The multi-shaft version of the 3.3 comes with the short and long attachments for the crankshaft. The only reason I had to buy a new crank was I got the normal 3.3 to start.

Hi,

My Tornado EPX motor stopped working suddenly, I am not sure what the problem is. I wish I knew more about troubleshooting.

Can anyone please suggest what would be a close replacement for the stock 540s motor.
Any help is greatly appreciated, this is my first RC vehicle and I just had it for a month.

Thank you.
The whole system or just the motor? If it just stopped it could be the motor or esc..... The only ep car i have i swapped the electronics out with the traxxas velineon set. If i had to guess i would say the stock one is prob. around a 15t motor. I would just order a new one from redcat or himoto if you just want stock. If you got the cash I would recommend brushless/lipo. My ep car started at 22mph stock and went up to 50mph with the brushless set and a lipo. It's fun to see the looks on people's faces when a ep car passes their nitro too...

i dont mean to be a pain....but if u feel like it could u tell me what other parts i would need for the 3.3 conversion. would my hpi clutch bell set up fit on this?
leanin towards gettin this than spendin around $450 for the 21tm

That's the one......you will need the manifold too. I suggest going with the stock set-up to start and go from there...copy and paste at ebay......
NewTraxxas 3.3/2.5 T-Maxx Header and tuned pipe

this linkage set will give you what you need besides the servo arm.....might have to cut the longer one at the bend and use your stock spring and holders
HPI Linkage Set: NRS4MT

and then this servo for the bb from redcat

With the multi-shaft 3.3 the stock clutch and bell will work fine. I would suggest switching over to the single speed. It has more then enough speed with that 3.3 and you can take out the gear stripping problem. I would put the stock engine and 2 speed tranny against the 3.3 and one speed any day. That 3.3 is one mean mamma jamma..lol

I was just investigating and based on that looks like I might have to replace brushes in the motor. (I just had about 6 to 7 runs, is the life so short for the brushes?)
The buggy basically slowed down as if it was losing power and then completely died.
The ESC seems to respond ok, when I squeeze the throttle the light instensity on the ESC increases indicating that it might be fine.

Also I just received an email from Redcat saying that the replacement motor should have 19turns, does not matter whether it is single, dual, quad etc.

Do you think the I can go higher or lower on the number of turns on the motor, will the ESC support different Motor turns.

Thank you for your help.

That stock esc will handle the traxxas brushless engine and a 9.6v Nimh battery. I just tried it on my kids and it works pretty good. Im not sure what the traxxas motor has for turns though..

yep....You use the stock flywheel, clutch, bell and the peice that goes between the flywhel and engine. I've done it to a couple different cars now. I'll try to get a close up pic on here tomorrrow so you can see it...

here's a pic.... I have the single speed in mine. I would recommend using an aluminum set of clutch shoes too. I use these- Kyosho Inferno GT/ MP 7.5 Sports Clutch Shoe Assembly

Here are some pics of my tornado xp's:

1. upgrade your 2 speed clutch bell to: http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin...4&I=LXCLR2&P=K + http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin...4&I=LXDHM0&P=K + http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin...4&I=LXCLR9&P=K
you may need to widdle away a little of the upper plate post so the gears clear it

2. if you want more low end touque use this clutch bell: http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin...4&I=LXM730&P=K you will loose top end speed with this but have much low end take off

3. upgrade your single speed clutch bell to: http://www.clermontmotorsports.com/s.../Detail?no=200 or this place: http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin...?&I=LXLST9&P=7

4. upgrade to this clutch spring traxxas 4146x : http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin...=++&search3=Go
How do I install the clutch spring and the 2 speed clutch bell upgrade?

Could be a few different things but all at the same location. Is it running 4wd still? If not the drive cup came loose. the disk could have stripped too. Sometimes if the drive cup is too far away from the tranny the disk will completely come off of the cup and ride between it and the transmission. Any way you look at it the problem would be coming from that one side of the tranny. Just take it out and see whats going on.

That's an easy one. Take the engine out to start. Then there's a screw going in the front of the clutch bell that needs to come off. It's easier if you hold the flywheel with a pair of vise grips or the engine will just turn over. Once the bells off you take the old bearings out of it and reuse them if they are in good shape(roll free). Then take off the "C" clip holding in the clutch. Take the old clutch shoes out and bend in the middle (make it look like a half a sandwich) then the old spring will come off easy. Hook the new spring together at the hooks on the ends and slide it over one half. then put the other half on kind the way it came apart......kinda hard to explain so ill post some pics in a few.... once you put it all back together makes sure the bell spins freely with drag. If that's good put it back in and make sure you dont make it too tight against the gears. The easy way is to put a piece of paper between the bell and tranny when doing it so even if you are a little tight when the paper is taken out you have a little gap. Ill post some pics of the clutch later

ok thanks
Does replacing the clutch bell and the clutch spring really stop the differential gears from being striped?

The new bell wont strip the tranny gears as often but i dont see where it would effect the differentials. The spring wouldn't effect either. The only reason for upgrading the spring is because the stock ones are notorious for breaking. Never striped a diff but I've went through tons of trannies. The only way to stop it is to go with the single speed. Even then loose gravel can eat them up.

Maybe I'll change it to a single speed if it doesn't strip the gears.I placed duct tape under the chassis where you can see the differential gears so no debris can get in.What's a tranny?Redcat should really make metal gears.

Tranny = transmission..lol I know Himoto is working on the metal gears but haven't heard anything new in a while. Blocking the bottom is a win/lose situation. While it does keep rocks from going up it also keeps them from falling out. First bigger rock you catch in there you'll see. To go single speed you will need a single speed clutch bell and transmission. I can find the part #'s for you but I think I listed them just a couple pages ago.
