Honestly 9 times out of 10 they break because they are pulled to far out. I have pull starts that are like 6 months old and don't have any problems.

i have to agree with nick on this one, you only pull out 10 inches max, alot of people pull out all the way and the spring gets messed up inside of the pull start, otherwise known as gorilla fist
