Default Electric Volcano questions

Intro, I am 33 years old now. I used to race electric RC cars about 15 years ago. So I have been away for a very long time. My wife got me an electric volcano for christmas, which looks like it will be some fun. The truck is on it's way to me, I don't actually have it in hand yet but I want to get a jump on some stuff. My questions are :

1 Can the battery be upgraded voltage wise (maybe an 8 cell 9.6 or 7 cell 8.4 ?) or should I stick to a 7.2 and just go higher mah ? Would a voltage upgrade serve any real benefits ? Is it safe ? Sorry if this sounds like a dumb question, but these types of mods did not really exist 15 years ago.

2 Any recommended upgrade parts right off the bat ?

3 I am looking for increased speed and runtime with cost in mind.

All responses, help and guidance greatly appreciated. I am really looking forward to getting back in. They are building new houses across the street and there is some awesome dirt piles and stuff to tear up. Can't wait.

Thanks to all,
Chris

1. yes you can upgrade to an 8.4, it will make it faster since there is more voltage, i am sure you could go 9.6 too.
2. BRUSHLESS SYSTEM FROM REDCAT, i did it on my tornado and tsunami and its amazing the difference you get.
3. the brushless system lasts as long on the stock system, if not longer

get some pics and videos of your running!!!!!

Where would I find more info/pricing about the brushless conversion ?

If I stick to battery upgrades are the 8.4 and 9.6 batteries safe to run in this truck without damaging stuff ? I was considering 9.6 volt 3800 mah batteries.

What style battery connectors do these trucks come with ?

Thanks !

redcatracing.com is where you would find a good, inexpensive brushless system, they are out of stock right now but should be getting them in very soon, they are very much worth the wait.

i ran an 8.4 in mine and had no problems and i am sure the 9.6 would be fine too but just stick to the 8.4, the mah doesnt matter.

they come with tamiya connectors.

Thanks for the info. Unfortunately $120 is a little out of range right now so I guess I will stick with batteries for now.

Isn't mah directly linked to runtime ? I was figuring that the jump to 9.6v would show an increase in power and speed, while a higher mah would provice longer run times. Is that an incorrect line of thinking ? Is there anyway to know for sure that I won't damage the electronice in the truck ?

Again thanks for the link, they have a lot of good upgrade parts for the truck.

i meant it doesnt matter what mah you use, and yes the larger the mah the longer the run time.

I think the Brushless will be too much if you haven't driven in a while. It actually has more torque than nitro.

I don't think an 8 cell would be good. Stick with 6 cells.

It will run through the motor real quick and most likely smoke the esc.

8.4v would be better but is going to do the same. I know that a 7.2v works fine and with that the motor should last a while.

Do you have any suggestions for a little more speed and longer run times ?

What the best place for the 15t motor ? Anything I should be looking for (specific brands or anything like that)?

If I stay with the 7.2 batterries anything special to look for there ? I saw some that were 7.2 and 3800mah, would they work well with the 15t motor ?

Lastly is there any one page here that I can find mod info for the electric Volcano (like max motor sizing and stuff like that) or is it all kind of scattered throughout ?

Thanks again guys,
chris

it would be scattered, the video i posted was with a 7.2, 1800 nicd, 15turn double, team orion with stock speed control. It runs good and is pretty quick and gets good run times, it would only be longer with a better mah battery. You can run an 8.4 too but why take a chance. I know clermontmotorsports.com carries motors but towerhobbies.com has a large selection.

How about Titan 550 12t motor ?

chris

the esc is rated for 12 turn but that may be too low and burn out the esc eventually since your pushing it to its limits.

just getting a better battery will do wonders for that truck. increased mah rating means increased amp output also in most cases. therefore a larger mah battery will increase not only run time, but power. this is done by simply being able to keep up with demand. if your truck requires 40amps but the stock battery can only produce 20amps, the voltage will drop and slow the motor speed down. if you can keep up with the motors demand then the battery voltage will remain where it should and you'll be consideribly faster and have more torque to boot. check out some good side by side 7.2v packs and a decent peak charger. i kind of got a soft spot for the dtx4200's. they've worked very well around me.

if you need something cheaper and easy to get anywhere, drop by a radio shack and pick up their 3300mah nimh.

I wouldn't get the titan. I never delt with it because I had the older Traxxas models with the stinger motor but I've heard it runs out of brush really quickly. You can use the titan 12t on a 15 turn esc because it's a 550 size motor instead of a 540-s.

How about something like this motor with some 3500 or 3800 mah batteries:

Team Orion Orbital 2R Machine Mod 13X3 Motor 13T Triple
Type: Orbital 2R Mach Mod 13x3
RPM: 37500
Max Eff.: 80.4%
Amp: 31.3

Is this too much ?

Again guys thanks for all the support. I would make bad decisions without a little guidance
