Redcat Rs10xt Crawler
I want to get a rock crawler to play indoors for the winter, looking at the Rs10xt. I have read multiple reviews on them about the bad servos and the odd esc smoking. I think I still want to get one based on the 4 wheel steering and price. Just a little reluctant to buy another redcat, I have dumped about $1000 into my earthquake 8e. i really havent even bashed it yet, just driving around getting used to it. but that is another topic. Anyone have any real life experience on the Rs10xt, I don't want it to end up being a $4-5-600 dollar rig, might as well just buy a kit and build my own for that price. thanks

ive owned 3 over the past few years
drop in some $15 exi or mg servos,
pop on some proline or similar aftermarket tires
cut the stock foams
add some lead weights
And done, it will crawl very well like that. Even with just better servos and cutting the stock foams it will be good.
I did limit the suspension a little with some shock adjustments.
The rc4wd outcry duel motor esc is also a nice upgrade. It has turbo bec, and can handle 3s...which gives the rig more wheel speed for slick rocks.
I never had any issue with the stock ESC myself. I only went to the outcry for more wheel speed and the turbo bec.
I broke a suspension link end once or twice. a shock end one time.
I never had to replace trans gears. And you shouldn't unless you do the 540 motor mod or upgrade to 380 brushless motors. IMO, there is no need to go that far.
If you want a sub $300 rig that will out-crawl a axial scx10 (even modded) then the rs10 will do that. even out of the box the 4 wheel steering (expecially with 4 modes) gives it a huge edge over other budget minded crawlers as well as even the losi NC or AX10.
How did you spend 1k on the 8e? The servo sucks, the steering bell crank needs upgrading and the diff upgrades are needed. Other than those things I was happy with my 8e, which I did bash. It is no HPI savage, but it can go pretty hard and pretty fast for its cost.
They have a new 1/8 brushless monster coming out soon.

Oh, and a birdy said this time next year redcat should have a "scaler" crawler. shaft driven solid axles....frame rails. Low cost version of a scx10 is what Im hoping for. even tho I have a scx10 I still cringe at how much it cost me.

ya sorry it took so long to reply...As far as the earthquake 8e goes im on my 2nd motor, 3rd esc, 3 bell cranks, 2 diffs. it's $50-100 dollars everytime something goes. Im up in Canada so shipping is expensive, more than the parts most of the time. The 8e rocks when it works, just a huge learning curve and 2 weeks wait for parts to show up everytime.

I felt the same about my 8e. diff issues after awhile and early on I snapped 3 stub axles from traction rolling on pavement. after that, I stopped driving on pavement and only drove on grass / dirt and never broke another stub axle!
I really, really wish redcat would offer a gearbox upgrade. The plastic gear box, with the self tapping screws holding it together doesn't work. I feel this is where stripped diff gears come from. I think the torque applied to that gearbox allows it to move some, thus the ball bearings moving and the tolerance of the gears changing. If the plastic gearbox was offered in alloy....or the plastic box had locknuts at the base for the top screws to go into, then the ball bearings would be held in place better and the tolerance wouldn't change and the gears would last longer.
The truck is a beast. and for the money it is really not bad. I know savage flux owners who had to spend big money to upgrade the diffs in that truck to handle the power....and that truck costs $200 more than the 8e does in the 1st place.

Good Call on the plastic gearbox housing flexing...never thought about that. I might try drilling right through and using a long rc type screw with a lock nut.

Leaking out of the box sucks, but it likely just did not have the cap tightened good enough. I would take it off, remove the cap, top it off with 30k weight shock oil and put it back on. The rs10's ive had the shocks held up as well as any other crawler shocks Ive owned.
I cant recall the MM they are....but if you measure them then you can google the measurement in inches and convert to MM. Just type in google search 4.5 inch to MM (as example) and youll get the MM length and then if you really want new shocks you can search ebay to find ones of similar length. But be prepared for sticker shock. shocks (full set) start around $30 and go up from there.

ok thanks! I didnt know that piggy backs wont be any better. I like the look for the most part. But thanks i didnt think about that. An 30k ? Like 30000 is what tge oil is? Wow

As far as aftermarket....pretty much an 2.2 crawler wheel and tire will work. You wont really find any that are bigger. Only way to go bigger is to get 12mm to 14mm hex adapters...which would allow emaxx type wheels to work. But they would be much larger and could cause you issues with the driveline.
If you want just a taller tire, the axial wraith tires are a bit taller....but they are only half as wide.
#13
Oh ok. The wraith tires dont sound like what i want. A taller tire yes but not skinnier. I dont want to mess up drive train so i guess ill just cut the foams i didnt think about that. Is memory foam good to use? I see on here some people use it

On top of that, you can add some lead stickon weights to the front axle. that will improve grip...especially when going uphill.

I do like Imex swamp dawgs. very aggressive tread....good for snow, dirt, mud, loose material. Not the best for rocks as they are not super soft, but good all-around tread.
I did think of one larger than stock wheel/tire you can use. The wheels and tires from the ground pounder or earthquake 8e. both are taller and use 12mm hex and a pretty good offset.

Im going to get the G-made G-air wheels with the tires i have already.
Id really like to know the length of the shocks that r on my rockslide. Bcuz i want to upgrade to the G-made shocks.

I don't own a rs10 right now, so I cant measure the shocks for you. but if you measure them (fully extended) then use google to convert inches to MM and that will give you the number you need to buy other shocks.
#19
Right after i asked that about the shocks i thought about that lol. Thanks though. Idk about it being a fad i just got into crawling... Like 2 weeks ago. I jist think the wheels r cool i like the idea of adjusting the air pressure i work @ discount tire so i think its neat.

While using my rockslide for sonething other than crawling.... My wife was trying to be cute and suggested i rake the front yard gravel to get the track marks up.... her "cute" idea became reality when she saw me next and caught mme tying the end of the rake to the back of it lol i went all aroumd the yard ans was almost done... Then the front servo spazzed out and died, good thing i had an extra!

similar to those of us who have made custom plows, and thus shoveled off the deck with our crawler
I like the MG996r servos. sometimes you can get them threw hobbypartz.com (when in stock) or you can get them off ebay, tho that way they ship from hong kong. but they are cheap, metal geared and stronger than the stock ones. when I buy off ebay, I pick up 4 or 5 at a time. Seriously, they are like $9 shipped.

yeh, the exi and MG servos are pretty close in performance and quality. On hobbypartz both brands cost about the same. Ive never checked to see if exi servos are cheaper on ebay.
