What happens is you heat up the glow plug with the glow ignitor, the little coils turn bright orange. And then that sets the air fuel mixture off. And after it starts you can pull the glow ignitor off. Because the ingredients in the nitro react with the glow plug and keep it glowing hot.

It has a platinum catalyst in the wire which reacts with the methanol in the fuel. Sometimes this catalyst deteriorates so you can start the truck with the glow starter (because it glows hot) but when you remove the glow starter the engine dies, because the catalyst can't sustain the heat anymore.
