busted gears in my rear diff today
i was running my volcano today, and i started to notice a "chunk-chunk" sound when i drove it slow. at speed, the noise kind of went away...but something didn't sound right.
i shut it off, and lifted it up off the ground....spun the wheels by hand.
I definitly feel and hear the "chunk-chunk" in the rear diff when i spin the rear wheels by hand...like there is a busted gear or teeth missing. it binds for a second, then "skips" and then it spins ok once it's past a certain spot. it doesn't do this again until i rotate the wheels all the way around. i marked the wheels, and it happens in the same spot every time the wheels go around.
i pulled the driveshaft going to the rear diff, and spun the front wheels. the noise and feeling is now gone.
so i know that it isn't coming from the front diff or the transmission.
the noise is definitly isolated in the rear diff. (but i have not pulled it apart yet to verify that something is busted inside)
now, how much work is it to swap out the rear diff ? it looks pretty straightforward from what i can tell by looking at it.
the only thing that i can think of that may have caused this was a jump that i did. it wasn't a huge jump, but when it landed, it landed on the rear wheels in kind of a wheelie. i always let off the throttle when the truck is in the air, but maybe it landed hard enough to bust something in the rear diff.
the truck was still moving fine and was still driveable...it was the noise that made me stop.
had i not heard the noise, i would have kept on driving it because it was running great.
i did manage to run 4 tanks of fuel through it today before this happened, so it was a pretty fun time.
i checked recats site, and it looks like they only sell diff. gear sets. i was thinking that they would have a complete diff.
it would be much easier and faster to just swap out the entire diff., rather than re-building it.
i found a brand new complete diff. on e-bay , but it now for $9.95, with free shipping so i went ahead and got it.
i'm very certain that my rear diff is junk.

What brand .28 is it easy to mount that to the volcano?

You have to drill new mounts to make it fit. I have many of the.28'sin my box of parts, Iplan on doing a dual engine setup in the future.
