Default ! NEW ! BS903-020 Diff Upgrade Redcat Trucks and Buggies

This techniquetook me about 6 hrs, but since this i havent opened my diffs inmonths and gone through 3 engines. I Ran my newCaldera2days before the differentials wore out, upon opening them found them dry.So before you break in any product with moving parts, I myself prefer to totaly disasemble the unit and make sure the propper lubricants are used. Molly Grease Black will go along ways and wen ever i order Bearings no matter how small I dissasemble then soak them in a cleaner and add just a 1/3 of the available space w grease , using the drag technique with grease in my palm then Reasemble. A little messy But ensures proper lubrication. To remove the snap ring you have to find it and get under the hook end and pryit out, and be carefulthey liketo jump out. I put a glob of soder on a sewing needle loop end about the size of a pea I was going through bearings every week but now every month or more. OK the upgraded Tornado Pinion gear worked the best for me 02030T, it has the best pitch. But it is too thick. You have to wear safety glasses when grinding off the solid end opposite the gears about 1 to 2 mm from the base of the gears, making sure it is even or it will wobble then using a chain saw blade sharpening stone. I reamed out the shaft hole to where it went on rather snug. And then for the pin slot i used a dremmel cutting wheel keeping it centered your gonna make it a little to long but as long as the pin is in a low center spot it wont move far.Putting a good washer in between the pin and the bearing is important. I used the Slipper clutch spring washer on bolth of mine. Check out these upgrade ideas and more at, www.catbob07.rcuniverse.com . any input is apreciated, and if you can keeper at full throttle, dont dottle.

Do you have pics of the actual gear you modified?

Yes as a matter of fact, just today,, I Had to open up the rear diff to replace the input shaft yoke. And I was shocked. Not a single speck of metal flake.Like you usually find. Their was some wear. But it was good to clean regrease and reasemble. I noticed that thePinion gearpin was broke, but the washers held it in place. Now on the front gear i did the same procedure, exept for i left around 2.5mm of solid, whereas this particular gearI left 1mm of solid below the gear. I should open it up soon but not unless i need too. I run my truck Hardeveryday for about a Quart of fuel so these diffs are getting one heck of a workout www.catbob07.rcuniverse.com

Does your camera have a "macro" setting? That'll let you take closeup's that are very crisp! (You'll need to steady the camera on a tripod or some kind of a makeshift mount, to keep it from moving when you snap the pic.) But the pix will be much easier to see! (Especially for us old folk) hehe..   Sounds like some good mods though, thanks!!

Yeah, Modds? upgrades? I'm about 10 years new to this nitro stuff  and 3 mo new to this posting my camera was a moto Q and I think I was in a bit of a hurry,  sorry I sold the truck with all those killer modds.  i lost my unemployment and it has'ent come back yet but will and I will get a Avalanche god willing.   But i was absolutely shocked as to how well they did I ran about 7 gallons of fuel on those diffs and when i opened them up I found hardly any wear and no flakes cleaned them up and regreased them and off.   It is to bad they cannot put the same cups on the input shaft as they do the output cups.  Saved a bundle on diff gears  I was thinking about making them for Rc's.    the gears?

What do you supposemakes the diffs last longer?? In other words, do ya think you could get away with justadding some new grease/fluid into the sealed diff, or do you think it needs the upgrade pinion as well, to make it last longer??(I'venot blown out a diff yet, so Im not sure what part is the weak link) But Im having a heck of a time figuring out what youdid to get the new pinion to fit/work? (The pix from post #1 are missing) It says "attachments" but there's no pictures showing up? Thanks again!

New grease allways helps. But like when i was in the army small arms specialist. In school we had these 45 caliber pistols that wouldent hit the broad side of a barn, the reason is they have been dissasembled so many times they were wore out, and they were made of steel just imagine what plastic is like much much worse and you mix grease and plastic togetherit dissolves. Their is a dialectric grease made for food processing that you can buy a grease gun tube for like $18.00 most hydrolic hose makingplaces have it and it dosent deteriorate the plastic causing sloppage in your gears. Redcat is a great product but the Aluminum piniongearis not designed to last usually when the yoke goes so does the gear and thats a $10.00 bill x2 for just the gears and of course they do not sell the pinion seperatly. When i ran my truck it was full throttle till it sputtered and i knew it needed fuel. so i was not takeing it easy at all on the gears. The first photos were not of the gears or process, of making it,the secound photos show the actual product after many gallons and a couple of engines later and like i said in the first post how it was done. I found no particals whatsoever and their was so little wearI almost fainted LOL. Your doing something right if your gears are lasting. My modd had the wheels turning so hard i actually had axles twisting and snapping. And hey don't be sorry thats what these posts are for to share ideas and technuques. Paul.

Yea, I dont rip on it that hard, but I have broken a dogbone or two and a few drive cups.. Im sure the diffs arent far behind.. But when I do tear one up, I'll get the upgraded pinion and do whatevers needed to make it or work! Thanks again!

I don't think catbob007 is coming back; he had some kind of disagreement of some sort.
