Pardon my ignorance but I'm a newb to this. What does this roto start do???? If I had to take a wild guess I would say it eliminates the pull start way of starting the engine??? I'm just trying to learn by soaking up all the knowledge on this site. It's been very helpful so far.

Yep...these types of starters are a pretty neat deal... you replace the pullstart with a different backplate and have a handheld starter with a long metal rod that plugs into the backplate...push a button and the engine turns over...it's a real knuckle saver.;)

does it really work on these cars (tornadoxp and volcano stx) my hpi has the rotostart and would like to use it on these cars. only downside is if you dont have a fully charged battery, an extra, or didnt bring the charger and stuff with you it's a drag. I was told it also takes a little of the performance away, thats why most real racers use starting boxes.

It doesn't affect performance any more than the pullstart does....besides...the effects are so minimal...you...I or the average Joe Basher wouldn't even see it.

Jcam has one on his truck...you might P.M. him and ask.

yep it shure does and I have to say GOOD BYE BROKEN PULL START CORD!!!!!!!

just remember to install shaft side of roto start on the exhaust side of the motor (where you put the input shaft/dogbone for the roto start system)

You can also buy the roto start drill or use a cordless drill with adjustable clutch settings.

I use the roto start drill that came with my savage limited edition.

Happy wrench turning and drilling----YOU WILL NEVER LOOK AT A PULL START AGAIN!!!!

Yo....is that the right part number??? 87121??? I went to the HPI website but couldn't find it. Found some other ones....but not for the .18 engine. Somebody help me out cause this pull starter is really tearing up my knuckles.......not to mention pissing me off as well. Anybody got any tips on starting a flooded engine??? At least that's what I'm thinking the problem is right now. I started it up this morning had it running then cut it off by placing my finger over the exhaust. I couldn't get it started afterwards anymore. I put some nitro into the carborator but it came out too fast and totally filled up and overflowed. Plus the pull start feels stiff....stiffer than normal. I can pull it and it gets stuck, then it loosens for a few pulls then gets stiff or gets stuck again then loosens again etc etc etc. The manual says when it is stiff there is too much gas in the tank or in the carb....I think. I can't quite remember. My glow plug is good as is my charger. I've messed around with the adjustment screw for the carb but still nothing. Feels like I'm trying to start up an old ass lawn mower instead of a small r/c toy. Any tips will be greatly appreciated.

take out the plug, turn upside down and pull a few times, also see how it feels when you pull it without the plug in it. put plug back in put ignitor on plug, pull and start. If the pull start feels tough to pull when the plug is out then you need a new pull start.

THE HPI ROTO START PLATE IS #87121 AND IT DOES WORK, GOT MINE TONIGHT AND IT WORKS!!!!!!!

When I pull the cord without the plug it feels really smooth...so I guess my cord is good to go. Still can't get it started though. Gotta friend of mine who's gonna tinker with it....I don't know what else to do other than the obvious stuff I've done. Oh yeah before I forget when I'm pulling the cord to clear the engine with the glow plug out does it matter if there is fuel in the tank or should I empty the tank before I attempt to clear the engine?

doesnt matter if there is fuel in the tank, maybe you need a new glow plug, or your carb needs to be tuned

stick the glow plug in your plug ignitor. be careful tho, dont burn yourself. if it heats up and glows orange your plug isnt the problem.

My plug and charger are good. Guess my carb needs some tuning. Pretty sure that's it. Thanks for the help.

That should be the one, i have the hpi rs4 with a .15 engine and its the same as the one i put on my volcano, it for the .12, .15 and the .18 engine. much better than the redcat pull start.

i dont think that is the one, you need the one for the .12, .15, and .18 motor backplate #87121, that one says for the .12 and .15 engine. says hpi7122, i put the #87121 on the tornado xp .18 engine and it worked fine, it worked with the one way bearing on the rear shaft so no need to buy one. just need to buy the wand, i had an hpi and the rotostart already.

all i know is the one i bought had all 3 engine sizes on the package and the item#, just want to make sure he does not make a mistake.
What exactly does optional mean, does it come with the item you posted or is it optional??

it is optional to add to the order to put on another nitro so that if you have 2 or more with .12, .15, .18 motor you can install/buy only the back plate instead of buying the whole kit ie 16.95 instead of spending another 39.99 to have on another car.
btw tower hobbies does has a typo in the stock # go to site using prompt in the above post then click on last hilighted st# at bottom of page and it will take you to the page fot hpi st #87121 (the optional part which is the same part included in the kit)

I think im going to hold off on buying the rotostart. my friend and i have it tuned pretty good it only takes about 3-4 pulls. it runs perfect. does anyone know when they will have more parts in stock because i need them.
