Strange clutch problem

I searched but couldn't find any information on this problem so I hope you guys can help me. After a few runs the clutch shoes on my Volcano jump over and get stick on the e-clip that holds them on. This causes the clutch to be slightly engaged constantly, causing the truck to want to jerk forward. It also makes it more prone to stalling and if I raise the idle to were it won't stall it goes by itself. This happened once before and I just pushed the clutch shoes back to their regular position and it was fine for a while. This time however one of the pins that the shoes fit onto also worked its way out part way, I put some Loctite on it and put it back it. I know the shoes will work their way out once again and I need to fix this. Any suggestions?

could be a streched spring... did you check that?

How do I check that? The spring seems to have a fair bit tension on it and when I push the shoes back into place it works just fine. Then, over the course of a few tanks, the shoes slip forward and over the e-clip. The e-clip pushes the shoes out so they lightly contact the clutch bell and cause the stalling/jerking at idle.

You dont even need the e clip. The shoes wont come off or anything. You can also find a larger e clip if thats what you ffeel you need.

Thanks, I guess I will try it without the e-clip and see what happens.

I just finished putting it back together but I will try to express it with some one else's picture. In this pic you see the shoes with an e-clip above them. The shoes on mine slide forward over the e-clip so that the hole formed by the two shoes has the e-clip inside. This pushes the two shoes apart and makes them contact the inside of the clutch bell.

you could remove the e clip or you can sand down the inside of the shoes so the e clip doesnt grab them, if i understand, your saying the shoes get hung up on the e clip.

Yes, I guess you could say it gets hung up on the e-clip. I removed the clip and will try running without it. I just thought that the clip was used for holding the shoes back, that seems to be its only purpose.

RE: Strange clutch problem

I just ran it without the e-clip... The shoes slid forward into the front of the clutch bell after one tank. The truck had a lot of resistance when I tried to roll it with the engine not running. Took the engine off again, pushed the shoes back again and reinstalled the e-clip. It ran fine for a few tanks but now it has some rolling resistance. I think the shoes slid forward once again. I guess I need to start hunting for a bigger e-clip.

I would replace the flywheel, spring and shoes. Sounds to me something is defective.

I think I will try getting a bigger e-clip and trimming the ends of the shoes so they fit together better. If it fails at least I didn't spend alot of money. Here are some pics, this is exactly what it looked like after I removed the clutch bell.
