sh .18 vs. vx .18.....
i always hear that the sh .18 makes more power than the vx .18 engine.
but, according to redcat that doesn't seem to be true. it says that sh makes 1.0 brake horsepower @ 29,000 rpms, while the vx makes 1.1 brake horsepower @ 32000 rpms. the vx also has a bigger bore, but the sh has a longer stroke. the sh also weighs more than the vx and the vx has a bigger displacement. so...is it that the sh is built more precise ? more reliability ? what makes the sh actually have more power than the vx ? i know that specs are specs for a reason...they may not be exactly accurate and that horsepower ratings may not be 100% accurate either. I have the vx .18 in my volcano...would upgrading to the smaller (spec wise) sh make a major difference ? my truck will be used for just bashing around...i don't plan on racing it. i like low end torque AND decent top end speeds. (35- 40 mph) I have not even broken in my vx yet...i've had it since the end of december, so i don't even know how it will perform. Maybe the vx will perform good enough for what i want to use the truck for...i'm not sure yet. Thanks. I have a VX18 in my Himoto MXT-2S and a SH18 in my Himoto MTR-2S.
I have asked this question to Eddie and he said they were about the same. Both are great engines. |

It all comes down to compression, size of ports, carb, and quality of build.

The specs don't match up anyway - the Sh bore/stroke makes for a 2.92cc engine if you do the math, and the VX bore/stroke actually comes out at 2.99cc so that's not entirely spot-on either. 2.74cc is closer to a .16 engine so the specs might simply be mixed up.

I think the theory goes that a longer stroke is a torquier engine at the expense of upper rpm. So that would make the SH stronger through the mid range (better for bashing) and the VX a little better up top, hence the higher peak power figure (better for racing).

Jpilkinton, I'm pretty sure you have an Infinity .18, not a VX18. Everyone I know says that the SH produces more power but the VX .18 is still a good reliable engine, just not as much power.

yeah the himoto wont have the vx.....anyways the vx are decent engines for bashing...I have a .16 in my onroader and it has been very reliable....I think the sh will be more powerful but if your just wanting to bash and hp isnt a big concern I would say run the vx till it drops, then use the erp and try a sh and form your own opinion

I bought a new Exceed Forza, 10Th scale buggy, it has a VX.18 engine in it, I have run the engine one time at idle and the clutch started smoking, the out sideclutch housing turned blue. So I pulled the air filter off, and used my thumb to shut the engine down. I don't know what happened to it? but I sent it back for a replacement car. It did all this in about 45 seconds, at first it started good was running rich and Idling OK! and all of a sudden went lean and burned the clutch up. So I think it did anyway. I'm very disappointed to say the least. The buggy body had no holes drilled for the receiver wire, and the body was not notched for the steering rods. The body sit on the chassis crooked. had to reroute the fuel lines so their was no contact rubbing the body. The throttle would not open but part way, had to adjust that. The brakes were rubbing when you rolled the buggy had to adjust that. I was gonna be cool with the receiver had no wire and the body not cut, but not when the clutch burned out on start up. I have had a lot of cars, airplanes, boats and never had problem's like this.</p> |

Yeah I don't know what that was about. I believe the Sh.18 engine is very tough. The part he is saying about going rich to lean while idling seems a little out there, but then again could be unfortunate enough to get a bad engine.

The SH engine makes 1.0 BHP the all new Taiwan vx.18 cxp engine makes 2.1 BHP at 32000 with a practical rpm rang of 4000 to 40000 rpm it's a all new engine Himoto and redcat, exceed, all use the new engine. it has 4 ports a new mod crankshaft, piston and sleeve. a new engine block, and rotary carb. It's a totally new engine from the ground up. I own this engine and I modified it with a header and took out the baffle in the muffler. The difference is dramatic, had to rich-en up the carburetor quite a bit. It ran 100 yards in a little over 4 seconds and 62 mph. Checked with a radar gun. Their was a head wind the day we tested the engine. my neighbor has the old style vx .18 engine it is a dog compared to the all new .18 engine

One more thing, I am going to get a SH.28 nitro engine for my 10th scale buggy the SH .28 has 3.6 bhp at 36000 rpm and will turn 43000 rpm. I can get the engine for less than $100.00 dollars. I already have adjustable motor mounts. I'll need a new carb linkage. maybe a 9.9 steering servo for fast reaction steering. and some adjustable shocks. 80 plus mph you bet. That's the plain any who, do you thunk it will work? I thunk it will. let me know your thoughts. all the best Arless

Increasing the bore of a cylinder generally has the effect of raising peak HP while stroke raise lower rpm torque. The VX may make more peak HP but the SH probably as a fatter torque curve and performs better overall.

running redcat Lighting STR vx.16 port/polish on sleeve, with HPI header port matched to the block/case, XTM tuned pipe (XTM-cellerator SH.18), HPI IS F Lexus body (Lexus Blue) Byron Pro-driver3000 30% fuel, engine has been sealed with (permatex red) High-temp RTV., my temps are 170-185!, perfect tune, instant throttle!, Sealing the engine makes a BIG differance for tuning! this car runs pretty fast forbeing theVX16, Looking to upgrade to the SH.18, or OS 18cv-R.

I was thinking of doing the same thing to my Tornado I think It will work and it will be pretty bad ass! just make sure you have enough room, the .28 exhaust ports run out the back of the motor not the side so you may have a tight squeeze fitting it in. you may also have an issue keeping it on the ground!! ....lol

The Exceed Forza is the same buggy as theRedcat racing buggy,"except the engine, vx.18 cxp & sh.18 engine." I now own the new upgraded Redcat racing Tornado S30 it came with aluminum adjustable shocks. I bought the orange and black buggy body, I wanted the green and red body, but they were out. So... the owner of "Redcat racing shop" Had a number of buggy bodies and that he would send me any color I wanted to pick from. I picked a red and silver color scheme body, it is free and so far I am a happy camper. It's to cold to break in the engine right now, but gives me plenty of time to check over the buggy for anything that might have over looked at the factory. Could someone tell me if the tornado s30 has a bond to receiver and fail safe? is it built into the receiver and or radio. With my Exceed had to bond the receiver and had to actuate the fail safe to get it going. I see nothing in the owners manual that talks about this.

im not certain, but you could test yourself and find out.
turn on the reciever and the radio...pull full throttle and while doing so turn off the radio. If the throttle servo goes to full brake, then the failsafe is set. If it at least returns to nuetral thats better than WOT. If the servo keeps the throttle wide open, then there is no failsafe set. Obviously, do this without the motor running:) |
Himotos do have VX .18's. I have one in my Mamba XR-1
