    Got the dowel cut and drilled to accept the carbon fiber on one end and all thread on the other.
    !/8 hole for carbon and 3/32 for the 2-56 all thread.
    I want to devise a nicer connector but at least the bits don't break cutting the wood.
    Got one pushrod done and adjusted the pushrod length,
    Cut my first piece of carbon fiber.
    I wrapped the cut mark with the painters tape marked and cut with a high speed
    cutting disc and I got a nice cut.
    Didn't splinter.
    Putting the elevator control horn in turned into a frustrating affair, because the coro debris kept getting on the screws
    and the control horn backing would not line up with the screw, so I'll try one early today. Wanted one on
    and kept at it till late last night.
    Tried the elevator held on the elevator whle moving the tx stick and it moves the plane, with
    very little to no flex on the pushrod.
    I'll see if I can figure out how much weight it takes to flex it.
    The elevator can pick up the back of the plane if you rest the elevator on a surface.
    I used my high tech tool holder that is made by Coca-Cola.
    Mine is customized with the flashy Sprite logo on it.

    Watched Draftman3 videos. He's fast and good videos, and I subscribed.
    Check his videos out,  they are good.
    I watched the hints and tips and routing looks like the winner for the wing fold.
    I'll have to get some kind of guide system set up because the wings are glued and both panels are glued to spars.

    I was thinking about natural construction and building with plastics.
    Coro vs balsa.
    Coro is cheap looking but durable.
    Balsa is pretty but fragile.
    coro is frustrating to get looking good without resorting to a $100 k cutter.
    Balsa is easy to cut and sands nice.
    Carbon fiber and metal.
    Carbon fiber, the Boeing 787 Dreamliner has carbon fiber wings
    that are laminated.
    The tv show on the wing construction was something to watch,
    if you haven't seen it, find it and watch.

    Landing gear.
    Cold out today.
    got the angles right after aclot of banging.
    May have to buff before putting on.
    Work room's a mess, as 'm getting lots of stuff on it.

    Hey Joel, you mentioned earlier about not cutting PVC because you didn't want to breath the dust.... I don't worry too much about the PVC but you definitely need to wear a mask if you're cutting CF with a cutting disk. CF is a carcinogen and is like breathing fiberglass. I use one of the Xacto razor saws, cut slowly by hand and then wipe away the dust with a damp paper towel. I don't get all worked up about it like some folks do but you do need to be careful with that.

    I have a decent respirator that I got
    a while ago at a job, when I had a job,
    Also i wear full goggles that are sealed around the eyes,
    had to get a cheapo at lowe's because the old one is hard to see thru.
    It seems the closer to finishing goofy stuff is happening.
    Had 2 routers fail the other day.
    Mine wouldn't run on wednesday, Roy's died the day before.

    Not as bad as My pickup truck breaking down on the way to the field EVERY time ( 4 times before I caught on ) I had an Un-Maiden plane in the back ready to maiden.
    Till this day I pack up any un-maiden plane in My car & maiden it before putting it in My truck..........LOL!

    Looks like it won't be long before it will be ready to maiden. [8D]
    Can't wait to see it in the air.

    Holy S*** just did the wing rout, a white knuckler when you're at this point.
    Remember the guy on Howard Stern, Beetlejuice?
    Watched a little of scary Movie 2 last night, and the one Wayans I think, is
    sitting at the table, and the actor who played 'Chris'
    on the show where he was the adult paperboy, opens the guys head, and Beetlejuice
    is in there saying " this is your brain on drugs".
    This is your brain on routing the wing when it's put together. Duhh!!
    I started to take it apart before I figured take some pictures, so you use more clamps on the
    level than is shown, just so if anybody a million years from now, is reading this thread and
    decides to build an ultrapaininthespad they can rout after wings are glued.

    On the dremel. I used a 1/4 inch high speed steel cutter. The cutters come in 1/8 as well.
    I used the guide and I have a dremel drill chuck that is tough to tighten with the guide in place.
    Lost the normal chuck for my dremel so maybe that one is easier to tighten with the guide in.
    I watched draftman3 video the night before and he has a laminate router and that is the better tool to use.
    I don't have one and if I could afford one I would have got one.
    I did a test cut on scap 2 mil before cutting.
    It is important to have the guide set up. I used a combination of steel yardstick and wood spar strip and 3 mil aluminum
    flat bar to get the cut in the right area.
    The steel ruler I weighted down with dead ups batteries.
    Have to be careful the table is flat, mine isn't.
    So that means you need to be pressing in front of the router to hold the 2 mil down.
    If you don't press the 2 mil down then you can cut to the side of the 2 mil you don't want to cut.
    You can set the height of the dremel guide to cut the top coro layer and then you can see better for the clean up rout.
    I tried different speeds on the dremel, slow doesn't work good.
    You end up with stringy half melted coro that is tough to clean.
    With the higher speed you get little nuggets that you can almost brush off, still need to be careful because the nuggets are stuck
    to the coro and it will tear up if attached to it. Those you can trim off with the x-acto carefully.
    I found that 9000 rpm, on my variable speed dremel worked best. Advance then come back a little and it cleans most of the melted nuggets of plastic off pretty good.
    It is a tedious process, between setting up and double checking set up, and the final rout about 3 hours.

    Another edit, you need the 4 mil coro on the opposing side of the cut since you have the 4 mil on top of the 2 mil.
    Then you rout to the clamp and stop, then put the clamp behind the router and keep going.

    I must of missed where you need to rout the coro. Is this to remove one side of a flute to form a hinge line? If so, the SPAD site shows a cutter made of two hook type utility cutters spaced apart the distance of the hollow part of the flute, and set to the depth of the hollow part. Using a straightedge, just draw the cutter down the length of the flute to remove one side. But, maybe I just missed the point of the routing?

    the routing is used to remove material to make a line to fold the coro against the flutes. instead of scoring. it makes a really good clean fold with out all of the tension in the coro to want to open back up. the simple flute tool is the best for folds with the flutes

    Made some good prrogress yesterday.
    Alot done.
    Still trying to get the top spar strip straightened, been clamped on a flat edge
    for 3 days and it's got a longitudinal warp,
    which is a pain because I spent a fair amount of time
    routing a 1/4 in groove in it.
    The groove is straight, didn't take a picture of the that process.
    I had it clamped down to the long steel ruler, I have. A lot of set up to
    do 2 routs though.
    Still trying to figure gas tank install. The throttle push rod needs room to the left of the gas tank looking at
    the front of the gas tank.

    One 4x8 is enough for the 4 mil areas.
    The 2 mil you can find under the thread on spad, where to find 2 mil.
    strted final preparation of the wing.
    One aileron is glued yesterday.
    Made some wing extenders because I am putting in ailerons only.
    Would of liked flaps.
    Got most of the fuselage done electronics in.
    I'll get some pics posted .

    Been trying the E6000 glue.
    Seems like Goop, awfully strong though.
    This stuff sticks enough that it removes skin when
    you scrape it off your fingers,
    I'm sure you guys know how I found that out, saw it on a post from 2005 and then tried it.
    Well, I guess I'm not the fastest builder.
    So much for simple plastic airplane design.
    Have exceeded the work space of what was the baby's room. He got high from the glue last night,
    I guess I should have taken him out of the crib when I was gluing, but he looked so cute sitting there
    all cross eyed and drooling from the glue fumes.

    I put together a wing jig with a lucky find this morning
    of some super straight particle board.
    I got lucky and it is some super nice stuff, even if it is particle board.
    Best thing it was free found in my early morning hunt.

    The 2 mil still has tension in it behind the spar.
    It has 3/4 inch in front of the aileron to attach to.
    Any hints at this point since I have been still
    thinking about what to do.

    Wing fold is working out good. One side down. Today getting ready to hit the other side.
    So far the E6000 is unbelievable.
    Was doing the wing glue down and put my finger right into the tube,
    so with fingers covered with glue, that got on the wing, tools, etc. it was funny.

    I was at the rc field on Friday to see if the field was still there.
    Doesn't look like anybody has been flying much, but it
    is really nice and would make a good sim backround.
    Seeing the field was a good thing because some days
    have been challenging on the spad, and it is a nice field.

    Today.
    Glued second side of wing.
    I added a block in the front before I finished folding.
    It will be nice to have a firm surface to attach the pvc holder
    for the screws that hold the wing down.
    I used an extra 4 mil piece in the back so there is alot
    of support there as well.
    Wing is drying and tommorow I'll leave it clamped .

    I'm slow.
    I guess I get the prize for slowest coro builder.
