Pics working.

I think I tried photobucket once before.
Maybe it's improved by now, before it wasn't user friendly.

Hi JoelStolarski
Nice looking plane. What did you make the main gear from? When is the maiden?

I'm stressing, tail gear is not holding good it's wobbly.
Mr. Villa I used a 3 mil thick 2 inch width piece of aluminum from true value hardware store.

THE CG APPEARS TO BE WAY OFF HELP I'M AT BREAKDOWN POINT !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Just kidding but close to being very stressed , and maiden will be this week,
I'm so broke today I can't get to the flying field and this would have been the day to go fly.

Oh well enough crying, and thanks for the support guys, I would have quit a while ago
if I didn't have anybody to keep me going !!!

What's wrong with your CG?  Did you get it balanced?  Hope y'all can get to that runway soon.  Good luck!

Hi JoelStolarski
If that aluminum is soft, like I have purchased at Lowe's Home Improvement, it may not stand up. I struggled with that soft aluminum, using reinforcing wires, and springs, and it never helped. Then I saw this: Dubro fiberglass landing gear at Tower Hobbies, their #LXNM65 for just under $15.00. My local LHS carries it, and I have purchased two there. I use it on my 8 lbs Corocub J3-Cub, and my 7.5 lbs Pusher Swept Wing Canard. However, your plane is probably heavier than those. They do recommend it up to a .61 size plane.

Hi JoelStolarski
If your CG is way off, at least consider moving the wing. That may be a good SPAD possibility. Once you have built a few SPADS you will know to keep the CG in mind right from the beginning. It should NEVER be the last step. Before I anchor anything down I will tape or tie everything in place to see how the CG is doing.

Mr. Villa the landing gear is doing what you said it will do and
I will once I am to afford to, replace the landing gear and make it using the 6061
aluminum which can be heated to bend, then let sit for 3-4 days and the hardness returns.

I have the weights of the plane:

Fuselage 9.40 lbs with everything in except motor.
Wing 4.20 lbs.
Motor 2.43 lbs.
I had Mike help me to suspend the plane yesterday after I used the online calculator
program to determine where the cg is.
http://adamone.rchomepage.com/cg_calc.htm

Weight needed to trim for for cg is 2.59 pounds.

I could not hold the plane on both of my fingertips by myself, so it developed into a bit of a job,
to derive the weight to balance the plane.
I melted down one of my 3 pound diving weights that I had not pawned off,
and melted the pieces into different size flat discs.
Then we used the discs to find the weight. Amazing how a little job turned into 5 hours to accomplish.
I made a mold to get the final weight that I am thinking of securing with screws to under the fuselage right behind the firewall.
I calculated a 5% static margin with the program above I put link to, and as far as Mike can tell we are at optimal weight in
other words after about 2 hours we had slight nose down without fuel added.

I Melted the weight and built a mold to get a shape, inserted 2 screws through the bottom of the mold to and if the mold had not stuck to
the weight it would have been done pretty quickly.
I DON'T KNOW WHY THE GALVANIZED SHEET METAL MOLD STUCK TO THE LEAD.

I ENDED UP HAVING TO BEAT THE LEAD TO FREE IT FROM THE MOLD !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1

I MADE A WEIGHT FOR MY OLD GRAUPNER SAILPLANE THAT YOU CAN SEE IN THE RC GLIDFER FORUM THAT NOBODY KNOWS WHAT MODEL IT
IS BECAUSE IT IS SO OLD BUT THATS ANOTHER PROJECT THAT IS DONE EXCEPT FOR HAVING TO FIND A WAY TO FASTEN THE BATTERY TO THE OUTSIDE BECAUSE
THE BATTERY WON'T FIT IN THE TINY FUSELAGE.

2.59 POUNDS to balance?  Wow, that's a lot.  Oh well, it is what it is..... let 'er rock.  Just be careful to plan ahead and know when to drop the throttle in case you're approaching the end of your runway and she still hasn't broken ground.

So you are very tail heavy. I suggested moving the wing; you did not comment, so possibly you missed that. Please at least consider it, and compare it to alternatives. I screwed up the CG on a SPAD biplane I built and ended up moving both wings back about one inch. Others have occasionally moved the engine forward by adding a large spacer, or whatever is needed. I have seen spacers about 4" long. Here again, compare it to alternatives.

Hi JoelStoralski
If you look at http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/m_9669725/tm.htm you will see what another SPAD fellow had to do to for a super tail heavy condition; he moved the wing back about 2-1/4". I believe he also moved the engine forward.

Patrick says " let her rock". She may fall like a rock.

Villa, I missed the wing moving, and I read the answers to the posts pretty carefully.

My total weight of plane isn't as high as some of the others I've seen on here, but
sure adding 2.59 is a bummer and it took a while yesterday to figure how to secure it.
Only good thing is the way I secured it on the bottom of the fuselage behind the firewall
I can cut pieces off if I placed it in the wrong place.
Haven't checked it yet and I'll need Mike to help me out on it,
until I can maybe build a cg checker.
Have to see if I have enough pvc pipe to rig one up,
but I can't afford to do it for right now if I don't have the pvc.

I wish somebody posted earlier on how to move the wing to change the cg.

I didn't know how to do that and I should have asked before I drilled the holes for the wing mounting, but
have had a couple of scatterbrained days.

I can still do that but I think I'll leave
that for a rainy day.
Not that I have much going on so far but I am just wanting to get the plane
out to the field and do some taxxiing and hopefully some flying.

Great looking USS Jole [8D]

To check CG Mr Clean uses a CG sling, I'm sure He'll chime in.
It's so simple it Spad worthy .
Just 2 loops of rope and a plum bob.
If He doesn't, I'll get You the pics and info.
tomorrow.

Jeff

I lied.....LOL here is the PDF of a CG sling.
http://www.henrylx.rchomepage.com/Stuff/Sling.pdf

7 pics are worth 7000 words. the plum bob points to the CG
More info

Hope this makes things easer for You.

I think all the interent browsing makes you read
things faster, and because their is so much
available you get overloaded .
I'm always feeling rushed about things.

The cg checker is neat I'll try one today.

I've been in the doghouse for so long now

that I guess it doesn't matter if I drill a hole in the ceiling to hang the plane.

To make it easy to check the cg of my planes, I just install a screw eye bolt in the wing center at the cg location. Make it strong enough to support the plane, I then hang the plane by this eye bolt and check for level in both fore and aft and side to side directions. Simple and effective.

Sincerely, Richard

I *did* mean *after* you got it balanced however you chose to do so.Not just let her rock as is. Don't fly that beast tail-heavy. Hope you're still making progress. Take care.

It was pulling good, did a second run Sunday, and found
an issue with a battery rubbing bad, so fixed that, and redid the landing gear with
wire going across to hold the front gear, which was splaying.
Good thing I didn't go off and rush things because what I fixed needed fixing.

A real good bit of news, I got in touch
with a fellow in town that has big rc planes.
I will be able to see him Friday so
that he can check the plane out.

Hey.. getting close to that maiden flight! Here's a pic of the C of G checker I made. Cost zero, works great. I used a big nail for the plumb bob. The rest was just junk laying around the garage. Figured if I was going to ballance it I might as well weigh it too to figure the wing loading. Will be using this rig on the .31 cc Coroplast SPAD I'll be starting shortly. Good luck on your maiden flight!

I like the blue body, is that painted?

Made a cg checker don't know if I posted it.
Used pvc pipe and made a plumb bob as well, and it
was at where I calculated the cg with the online calculator.
I was off on one side a little, so with the plane hanging i laid underneath
it and was able to measure better .

So it'll be good to get some feedback on the plane.
I test flew the old glider and it didn't do so good.
Need more power I guess.
I think I'll look for a plan for a flying wing to put the motor in
since I have some 2 mil coror left.

Joel... you say you "test flew the 'old glider'" and it didn't do so good.. Tell us more! Been following your build all this time and anxious to know all about the first flight. The blue on the Eagle 2 I'm pretty sure is Monokote. The black on the nose is painted over the monokote. Again, axious to know about your SPAD's first flight.
