Default ultraspastik problem help !!!!!!!!!!!!!!

ultraspadstik kraut build, here's the page

www.spadtothebone.com/SPAD/ultraspadstick/Page2/Page14/Page29/Page34/page34.html

He says use 2 mil on the 2" strip that goes in front of the aileron hinge line.
The aileron hinge assembly is a piece of 4 mil and the gap will be 4 mil he says 2mil which doesn't work on a test piece I rigged up to check stuff with

not sure of the problem you are having...

but did you double the aileron and flaps as shown here?

[link]http://www.spadtothebone.com/SPAD/ultraspadstick/Page2/Page14/Page28/page28.html[/link]

I would think everything would be flush if the top wing panel is 2 mil and you add the 2 mil spacer.

Hi JoelStolarski
I know I can help you, but unfortunately I cannot understand your problem. Plus I am not willing to dig into it further to possibly understand the situation. I have reached the age where my attention span is very short. Work with me and I'll probably solve your problem. To show you I can still solve challenges, look up my SPAD Flying Lawnmower at http://www.wilsonrc.org/download.php?list.9

The spacer goes on top of the 4 mil hinge area under your finger in the picture above, not in front of it. The aileron is to be folded over double, so the area to the left of your fingers would be a piece of 4 mil coming back to the hinge line. Then the 2 mil top panel goes on top of the 2 mil spacer.

here is a crude MS Paint image.

Thanks Mr Greenspeed and maybe you can help me understand what Villa was trying to say in
the post before yours.
Yeah, I 've been dragging my feet and dreading the wing fold because the test folding I've been practicing
has been coming out terrible.
I guess I'm getting worked up over
trying to get straight lines on this plane.
I don't have precise tools for woodworking and it's very frustrating to be off a 1/16 here and there.
The average person doesn't notice a 16th but I'm used to working on precision stuff(unfortunately I'm out of work too)
and I guess my skill level has degraded from being idled for so long.
Thanks for the picture, I'm becoming a bad reader and I have to reread stuff alot now.
I went back to the ultraspadstik plan and
read what he says to do and like you said he says to put the 2 mil ahead of the hinge line.
I have reread those plans like at least 1 hundred times now and it's plain after you drew the picture that
he put the 2 mil ON THE AILERON 4 FLUTES AREA.
The pictures on Krauts plans are terrible.
He designed a neat plane and from what I've seen on youtube they fly nice.

Other than He's old and tired & wants You to build a flying lawnmower I have no clue .............LOL!

Under standing Spad plans comes with spad building experience, the more You build the better.
After You have built enough spads You can build a fliable spad from just the dimensions with out pics.
Reading Chrisspads How to Design Your Own Spad is good to study too.
http://www.chrisspad.com/planes/main...paddesign.html

Using scarps to test building techniques like Your doing, is the way to go.

It looks like You making good progress, keep up the good work. [8D]

What would happen, or be the difference to flying if the aileron was flipped over and glued to the 2mm. top and 4mm. bottom without adding the "2mm. spacer" ? Just asking.

I fitted up the test wing fold without the spacer and on the small test piece it looked ok.
For now I'm trying to follow Kraut's plans exactly.

All this talk of spads and glueing... it's impossible to glue. the coroplast or corex is cheap an easily available but the glue i never did find one that worked to be strong enough. Though I still managed to build one
material cost $0
glue cost $40,
carbon bits wheels horns etc another $40
sticky tape to hold the whole thing together another $15
covering another $30

servos motors taken from something else .. priceless ;-)

result a nasty looking plastic plane  (but it is indestructable i have to say something positive)

I might as well have bought a load of balsa and done a trad build.

it's impossible to glue
No, You just didn't get the correct glue or didn't prep the coro/corex correctly.
Thousands of Spads have bin built and the glue is working fine.
result a nasty looking plastic plane
Here again it takes practice building a scratch built plane from coro/corex or wood.
I'm sure if I tried to build a wooden plane from scratch the first one would be a bit frustrating and look nasty too.

It's just a matter of what You want ; how bad You want it and what Your willing to do to get there.

Take a look at the USS at spadtothebone.com again it was the first one built and looks and flies as good as any wooden UltraStick

I would like to see You build a scratch built balsa Ultra Stick and see if it looked any better and how much You had to spend on wing jigs, balsa working tools, covering, covering tools and the dozens of other things You have to know to make one that won't turn into tooth picks on the first landing if it makes it that far.

Good luck.

like Greenspeed says, you got to get the hang of the gluing, I used a combination of
sanding and practiced alot of flashing, by
watching draftman 3 vids on youtube.
watch his down and dirty fast flashing, and you
got correx so practice,.
You'll burn some pieces and it stinks inside for sure if you do.
don't ask me how I figured that out !
