Default First ever spad build SICKLE and need some quick help with the spar

Hello:

I have a old 35 inch sickle and I need to make a spar. Do I just glue the 2 yardsticks togather then make the tapper cuts? Its a 35 inch wing.....how should the spar be cut? A 40 inch sickle has a spar that is 3/4 inch near the wing tip. I am useing 2.5 inch downspout and am following the 40 sickle plans but the spar has to be different right?

Thanks

Tammie

Can't it be done with just one yardstick? Taper from the bottom for the slight dihedral? I just glanced at the plans, but that is my guess. You can look at the plan somewhere in here http://www.spadtothebone.net/SPAD/ or find a similar one.

Thats what it looks like in the plans but it says somewhere that the wing is symetricle. If I just tapered the bottom would then it not be fully symetricle?

Thanks for the input

Use standard yard stick, taper as shown on plans, center in middle of wing. Last 2" of each wing tip will not have spar. Really doesn't need ii. Have built several of these and they are a blast to fly.

Hope this shows mine. Last 2 I've built (and presently have) has OS 35 AX and they rock. Good luck with yours.

I see this...but is only one side of the yardstick cut with the other just straight? Flat side down on wing?

No, flat side up, to give a slight dihedral. I think the spar is put in after the trailing edge is joined with CA wicked down the spar. Mustangman, cool pics you got there. A SPAD with retracts! Skis.

Thanks Man......It's amazing what can be done with coroplast. Fellow modeler turned me on to SPADS many years ago. Your imagination is your only limit to what can be accomplished with spads. Alot of the work has already been done for us. Read and follow the threads relating to SPADS.

I have another quick question about reading the plans on any of the spads. I see where it says for instance the distance between the LE and spar on example plane is 2" as in 2 inches. Then the next measurement may be the aileron or spar and its like 1.625. What is 1.625?.....I understand 5/16 or 7.8ths or 3/32.....but 1.625? Whats this?

Thanks again

1 5/8" . = 1.625". Five divided by 8 equals .625 as a decimal equivalent.
