Default Here goes nothin'!!!!

Hello all,

I am about to embark on building my second SPAD 3D......but not the same! This one is scaled up 1.35% and will have a 48 inch wingspan and fuse length. Other parts are proportionally larger. I hope to get a weight around 6-7 pounds.

Here is the kicker, I plan to put a 23cc weed whacker conversion I have as a power plant. I think it may be AWESOME.

Any ideas.....I am open to criticism/suggestions.

If it doesn't work, what the heck - It will be a blast to work with!

Thanx in advance,
Tom

The only thing I would be concerned about is the weight of that engine. Have you put it on the scale yet? What size prop? 15 inch or so?

The weight of the engine is going to give you fits, not only with the total weight, but in trying to get the whole thing balanced on the cg. Good luck and let us know how it goes!

The engine is off a weedeater. I have done considerable work lightening it. I am not too concerned about the CG issue. I am currently flying a Carl Goldberg Ultimate with a homelite conversion and also a stik with similar engine. The CG issue is addressed by shortening the nose and lengthening the tail end a bit. The servos go in the tail also. I will keep you posted!

Prop size is anywhere from 15 x 10 to 16 x 6. I may try a 16 x 4 fun fly too.

Cool deal, did you do the conversion yourself? Can you post some pictures of it please?

The big spad 3d flew well! It has some flex in the left wing leading edge. I think that a 5/32 wire or two will fix that. If you think the .46 size Spad 3d is a harrier/hover monster, then this thing is something far better. It just toots around at a 45 degree angle all day long. The 23cc engine is plenty to hover it.....and my prop choice was not ideal. It was just one I had sitting around.

This thing is too much fun! Any of you out there have gas Spad 3d inspirations, go for it....you will not be sorry!

I have a couple of preliminary pics.....
Finished engine and airplane pics are on the way.....I have been too busy building and flying this thing!
