Giant Spadet...
Here are the first few pics of my progress on my first ever SPAD...
I typically fly gas models, and since I have a 30cc homelite collecting dust, I decided to give SPADs a try. I downloaded the plans from spad.org, and have upsized them to accommodate my engine.
I figure it'll have a 100" wing, and with a 30cc motor, I think it'll fly very trainer-like. Since I'm an instructor for our club, maybe I'll train some others to fly giant-scale when I'm through...
Let me know what you think....

looks great so far. What kind of 30cc are you planning on using? Have you got an all up weight yet?
I've built a few of the gasser spads, and, just from what little experience i've had, i'll say with a 30cc engine, its gonna be very trainerly. Maybe too trainerly, but, i could be wrong.

Thanks, guys for the encouragement.
Chris, the 30cc is a Homelite, but it's a strong one. After reading your post, I think I may cut the wing back to about 84-90 inches. I don't want a pig in the sky... All up weight should be in the 14-18 lb range, or at least that's my first guess. I could be wrong, but I'll keep you all posted.
Bambam, I too like the stickers on the back of my truck. I got them from Aerografix (he's a user here on RCU) and only about $10 shipped. I have gotten more compliments on them at the local flying field than you could imagine. I oughtta buy a couple dozen of them and sell 'em to members. Wonder if he'd give me a bulk rate....
As I progress on my Giant Spadet I'll post pics... Just got a new Digital Camera for my birthday last wednesday, and since I'm broke after that purchase, I have to build planes from cheap (this was free) materials. A customer of mine was going to throw all his coro out with the trash....BLASPHEMY!
The horde, all free:
4'x6'sheets....18 pcs
2'x3' sheets....38 pcs
All is white one side, graphics on the other. Big score on my part, if I do say so myself....

14-18 lbs would sound about right. The clt i built weighs 15 1/2 lbs, its a 16x96" wing, and a very similar fuse. The engine is a 45cc homey i converted. Its got lots of power.
I also built a bipe, and used a ryobi 31cc. It weighs 12 1/2 lbs. It swings a mas 18x6 at about 7800 rpm (yes, its been modified a bit), and it doesn't quite have unlimited vertical, but it will climb out at about 70 or 75 degrees no problem.
14 lbs would be a good weight, i'd think, depending on how much power you really want to have.
Incidentally, i use 2 mil for all my wings, the bipe has 2 14x48" wings. They are both alot of fun to fly, almost as fun as my funfly's.
