Default How can I make my DIHEDRAL BUHOR slower?

My maiden flight on my 1st SPAD was great. I didn't even have to trim it!!! Thanks TATOO!!

My only issue is that I'm more used to small electrics and I have this great field that's close to my house. The size of the field and the speed of the DIHEDRAL BUHOR make me a bit uncomfy.

I built it with FLAPERONS [3 position] and this helps but not enough. It may be a bit heavy..........it has a .46 MECOA/4mm coro/3" wheels and 1"alum landing gear on it. Other than the extra servo it's built to TATOO'S spec.

Did I mention it's a DIHEDRAL BUHOR DIHEDRAL BUHOR DIHEDRAL BUHOR DIHEDRAL BUHOR ?

What size prop are you using?...you might try lower pitch if you can....just a thought

A wider wing to knock down the w/l even further? A thrust prop, like a 12X4 or 12.25 X 3.75, maybe. A smaller Spad is really a good way to solve this problem. Build a HOR or SRR with a .15 and 8X3 MAS prop, they fly slow and turn tight, I can keep mine in a very tight space easily. Increase the ws to slow it down even further. Light weight, large wing areas, low w/l, these are the keys. Don'y forget your left stick too.

Hacker-

I'm using 10x6 and 9x6 props on a brand new motor.

Frank-

Wider.....do you mean span or chord?

I just ordered a mess of 2mm coro for a QHOR or an SSR. I'm gonna try it with my DIESEL PAW.19

More span is all you need, that way the cg point doesn't change. The props you are using aren't helping, the above props I mentioned will really slow it down. BTW, the 9X6 is generally too small a prop for a .46 engine, it'll let it rev a bit too high. An SRR with a PAW .19 would be a great combo for what you are looking for, lots of power too (and lots of pitch black exhaust, I don't know how you diesel guys put up with that, lol!).

Thicker wing = more drag..

and it will keep the plane nice and stable at very low speed.. but then there wount be much high speed,, not even in a dive..

You'll notice on a Fun Fly that the airfoil is kinda thick giving you a very stable plane at slow speed...

Also A big plane that seems slow eats up a lot of sky , but a small plane that seems fast take forever to cover the same area of sky..

Bighead,
i agree with FrankC29,try the 12.25x3.75......if you cant find that try 12/4 or 11/4...good luck

Yes, a good point I forgot to mention. This is why the HOR and SRR use a full width Spar instead of a cut down one like most other Spad designs in it's class...it slows it down even more. Don't go overboard with this, or you'll end up with too much drag and not enough lift, but yeah, thicker=slower.

Damn,

I just ordered a bunch of 10x5 and 10x6 KAVAN SOFTPROPS!
The LHS's around here seem to have a very limited selection of props on hand.

What do you guys think the wing span should grow to. It's at 60" now.

Also, any suggestions on what to use as a spar to thicken the wing? Should I just layer the yardsticks? I would think that would be a bit weak.

Thanks for all the input SPAD RULES!

For a thicker spar you can rip a piece off some 4x2 pine about say 5/16 or 3/8 thick.
have you tried to get some thinner coro, this will help reduce weight all over, also if you can get some 2mm coro build an RNAF wing this will give you a true (SPAD) flat bottom wing.

Default I-Beam Spar

A taller and stronger spar can be made from two yardsticks. Rip one yardstick in half and glue the halves to the top and bottom of the other to make a yardstick I-beam. Most of the force carried by the spar is resolved to the top and bottom, so this design is strong for the weight. The full yardstick can be swiss cheesed, especially on the outer part. Heck, I've seen steel I-beams where the web (the central part) looks like nothing but rods.

Wow, That's so simple I never would have thoght of it. Thanks again guys.

Any sugesstions for wing span?..............or is just increasing one OR the other enough. Given the extreme cost of the wing I have to be very careful

60" is big already. keep it 60 make the wing thicker and try a slower prop ,, 11x4 or 12.25x3.75,,

you'll now have a dog with no legs,,

dont make a plane that is doing to bore you on it maiden flight..

Silly,

"Also A big plane that seems slow eats up a lot of sky , but a small plane that seems fast take forever to cover the same area of sky.. "

I've been thinking about this. Do you mean a big plane that is always on the verge of stalling and therefore needs to be coddled around the sky?
