Definition of a SPAD
i cant seem to find a clear explanation of a SPAD. i know it stands for "simple plastic airplane design" but i just wanted a clearer definition i suppose. stupid question huh..?
the reason i ask is that i have a spare 80" WS wing in perfect condition from a SiG Senior ARF, and i was thinking of using some square PVC or somthing for the fusealage, and some lite aluminum for a tail boom.. something like one of those Duraplane kits..would this be considered a SPAD ?
i have always assembled ARF planes and this would be my first attempt at homemade project. any idea's would greatly be appreciated...thanks !

RE: Definition of a SPAD
SPAD is more of a concept than an actual definition. Many "Spadders" have assembled planes from spare parts into various Frankenplanes that flew very well. Go for it and you won't regret it.

RE: Definition of a SPAD
The typical SPAD is made from corrugated plastic, PVC downspout and/or aluminum molding. The main advantages of a SPAD are simplicity and durability. I'd say using an existing built-up balsa wing definitely works for simplicity, although it's not quite as durable as a foam or plastic wing. I say go for it! I grabbed a covered foam wing out of the trash (only had aileron damage) with the same idea - strap it onto a SPAD fuse and fly it. Haven't gotten around to that project yet, but I still have the foam wing.

yeah your very close to a full spad. after a while you will want to make a coro wing for durability. yours is close enough. as long as it flys, who cares what its made of right?

Just take the measurements of the wing so You can make one out of coro if the wood one turns to sticks at some point in the future.

RE: Definition of a SPAD
basicly, one thing that spads have in common is a coroplast wing and tail feathers. The rest is pretty much open in my opinion. Thats the one thing that all spads- the ones on STTB at least (save the foamies) have in common.
