Low Wing, Tail Draggin S.P.A.D Debonair
Hey all just finished my first low wing SPAD. I have been flying a normal Debonair for about a year now and it has not missed a beat. So I decided to try it out as a low wing tail dragger. I also took quite a few pictures of the build process if anyone needs a little help. Anyways hopefully these pictures come out on here.

She's lookin' great! I have loved my Deb since I made it a tail dragger, and used the RNAF wing. I increased the chord a bit and used two servos for the 'rons, and it's one of my all-time favorite planes. It flies well in most weather conditions, can "hover" it in 20mph winds [X(], and I usually have the field to myself when the weather is "too something" for other folks to fly.
I think you're going to love it! Looking forward to the flight report.

P.S. Im interested in putting a symetrical wing on this plane (currently flat bottom). Can anyone show me a side profile of an RNAF wing?
How does one build a RNAF wing? Web link to a site or thread which describes this?

What do you guys think about mounting the landing gear. I planned on mounting the gear right under the leading edge of the wing. The fwd. mount bolts will actually go through the gear and then through the fuse. Will this work for me? Also great job RhyanO on the spadet conversion I think something like that will be my next project. I attched a picture of my tail wheel setup. I found in online and it works great for the tail. I tried the side mounted vertical stab with just a wire and after a few landings the plane starts to lean. Hopefully this will work out. Thanks for the replies keep em coming.

Sorry I forgot I had a question about the engine I put in it. It is a brand new Super Tigre .40. I could not pass it up for 49.99 on tower. I know I wont be able to rip through the skies but will it be plenty of power? Thanks

Here's a link to the DPS (Das Plas Stick) wing on [link=http://www.spadtothebone.com/freeplans.htm]SpadToTheBone [/link]. The RNAF stands for "Red Neck Air Force," the handle of the guy that came up with the 2mil on top, 4mil on bottom wing. Once you build and fly one, you'll be hooked.
If you want to make a fully symmetrical wing, fold the 2mil and glue 4mil ailerons in, then slide your spar in sideways, turn it up on end, and drizzle CA down the spar and let it set. Be careful not to glue the end of the wing to your foot when you drizzle the CA!

Yes Mark....I can use a computer from time to time. I got the planes in the car and ready to go! I guess I need to take a few pic's of my Spad-4 Star Forty combo and post them. It maybe a little ugly, but it fly so good.

I will be back home Friday and get the photos posted then. What I have is a Spad with wings from a 4* 40 on it. I got the spad from Mark after getting back into flying this Spring after 10 years out of the hobby. Being hard headed I did not want Mark to hook up the buddy box and I made a nice smoking hole in the ground on my 2nd flight. After replacing the fuselage I got the 4* wing out of the attic. I wanted to just see what it would look like and after seeing how much lighter the Spad was I decided to give them a try. After about 40 flights, not one problem. About a week ago I took my old .46 2c off and replaced it with a Mag .52 4c. The plane just keeps getting better!!

Hey sorry for the late reply but no I have not maidened yet. I am going on vacation for a weak or so. Hopefully while I am gone I can get the rest of the radio stuff I need and I will then be able to maiden. Just did not feel like stripping other planes. Anyways I am going to also post a few pics of the scheme my son and I came up with. He calls it the " Yellow Jacket " Have a good weekend. Mark

The power source is a .40 Super Tigre, hopefully this is enough. A friend of mine has a debonair with the same engine and it screams so it will do fine I think.

Thanks for this thread and especially the pictures. I am a newbie and have just completed my 1st Deb.
I have two basic questions:
1) How did you paint/color the fuselage (your color = brown)?
2) How do you build/attach the low wing? Do you have any plans or build instructions?

Thanks for the comments. To answer your questions here goes nothing.
#1) The fusecolor was actually pretty easy the local hardware store here sales 2 1/2" pipe in white and brown so I just bought the brown. I have used white before but I thought the yellow and brown contrast a little more for flight.
#2) As far as the wing goes it is simply a debonair wing. When I built it I cut the top out to fit the fuse. Then I added the wing wrap to only the bottom. After I cut the wing out I found out where my CG was then I cut out a hole in the fuse to fit my spars. It fits great nice and snug. After I got the wing on I drilled two holes in the trailing edge and the leading edge of the wing then glued some plywood to the fuselage. I then installed 1/4" blind nuts (T Nuts) then used nylon bolts to attach the wing.
Hopefully this helps you out. Let me know if I can add any more pictures that will help you out. I will do what ever to help.

Southerland's on Camp Bowie West in Fort Worth also carries both white and brown. If you're down that way, swing by JT's Hobbies about 1/2 way between Southerland's and 820, behind the Wells Fargo Bank. They've moved into a bigger store in that same strip mall and now have lots of new stuff. Say "Hello!" to Elvis while you're there.

hey Mark. I have been building spads the last two years and I didnt see your posting. I have done something simular, a low wing plane with some diehedral. It is sortive like the 4 star 40 but with a gutter fuse, I call it the coyote. It flies really good. Im sure if I had sen your plane, I would have done it sooner. It looks good and I hope you are enjoying it

I ended up with this one after removing the top wing from a lousy attempt at a biplane. The low-wing plane flew really well. I still have the parts somewhere, but the gear has probably been used on three planes since this one.
