Ultra Spad Stik 4 mil wing?
I'm in the middle of the Sticks,
Got a 4x8 sheet of coroplast, 4 mil.
A sacrificial Hedge trimmer with 21cc engine.
Question, the 2mil is going to cost more to ship in,
and I wanted a cheap build, so can I go ahead and use the 4 mil for the entire wing
and still get a flying machine.?

RE: Ultra Spad Stik 4 mil wing?
I am in same situation, lots of 4 mil, no 2 mil. So, I am interested in an all 4 mil build also. I think the 4 mil will be heavier and I think the Ultra SS was originally powered with a Ryobi 31c, so, maybne the 21cc will not be enough engine for spirited flight?
There was also a SPAD Stick designed aroiund a 25cc engine. maybe this would be better with the 21cc engine?

Looking forward to comments on this.

Sincerely, Richard

RE: Ultra Spad Stik 4 mil wing?
I'm a new plane flyer only done helis.
I got a glider I'm waiting on parts for from
hobbyking that'll probably get here when I'm 90.

Been on the sim warming up for planes so i'll try and find a spad or copy
the weight and thrust data to something like an ugly stick.
I'm still figuring RF 4 and haven't gotten to editing the planes.
Tom Tranh on ebay, update cable has become operational,
He's a cool guy and called to see if the cable was ok, so a little emery cloth and the pins
on the cable are nowq making contact.

Got the motor out of the hedge trimmer,
even with un-relenting *****in from the old lady.
But you do what you got to do, when your broke.
Looks like a glow engine, funny I've never broke
one of these out of a good working tool.
Got loads of good hardware that I can use.
I'm not putting the wing tips on the ultra spadstik, I like how the ugly stik looks,
and I'm hoping I can figure out the rounded tail, if not then just going to get it built and hope I
can find a good deal on the servos, so far
all I need is servos and some control rod, and whells.
Got everything to get er done.

Taking apart trimmer in my gallery.
I think the housing is good to keep for exhaust deflectors
since it is very heat resistant.
Got a cutting board at walmart this morning and it was only $2.98 and you
can make a bunch of motor mounts with it.

RE: Ultra Spad Stik 4 mil wing?
Lots of good conversion information in the conversions forum. Also, to reduce the weight of the small gasers, some have used glow/gas. There is a forum on that also.

Basically, you get rid of the flywheel, coils and sparkplug, and then get a glow plug adapter for $10.00, and a glow plug. You mix glow fuel and gasoline and run the engine on that fuel. Start the engine like a glow engine and then take the glow plug wire off and it keeps running. I plan to run a 16cc Echo gas engine that way. Lots less weight.

I will see if I have some more SpadStick plans that you may want to see. Do you have a CAD program to blow up files to any size you want? If not there is a free version of Intellicad by Cadopia that I have been using.

More to come. Good luck and Happy Hobbydays.

RE: Ultra Spad Stik 4 mil wing?
You take the thing that looks like a fan and the ignition off?
That would save a good amount of weight since the cg is going to be forward with the size of the engine.
I wasn't thinking about the spark plug although i did read about the glow plug adaptor and
didn't understand that it will run like a glow engine.
Guess I got to go find a puller somewhere.

spaceworm 12-05-2010 01:25 PM

RE: Ultra Spad Stik 4 mil wing?
A puller makes it easier, but it can be done with a pair of screwdrivers one on each side and then gently and evenly prying up on the flywheel. Sometimes putting a nut on the shaft to keep it from being buggered and then tapping with a hammer on the nut while prying with the screwdrivers helps shock it loose. Helps if you have three or four hands or really tactile feet. A spouse or girlfriend could also help, but don't give them the hammer if they are pi**ed at you.:D

Good luck.

Here is the link to the 22CC echo Trainer from the SPAD site. It might be a better choice for your 21cc engine.

Good luck.

Over and out.

RE: Ultra Spad Stik 4 mil wing?
Checked the 22cc chris spad trainer. i did happen to look for some square pvc as i was shopping for the square
post section for the ultra spad, and didn't see any. All we got her is lowe's.
I've got enough coroplast to do probably 2 planes.
If I can find the Chris spad echo trainer plans which I looked for on his site, and can find the square pvc then
i'll do that one for the 21 cc.
My union hall has a lathe hoping it still works, because there's a couple of things i'd like to turn
when i'm getting to the motor mounting.
Got a place to do some cutting that has alot of tools, so hopefully I'lll get the bulk of
it done early this week.
Got some servos coming so I'll plan on doing at least airlerons for now and still cut the flaps
and do those as I can find some deals on used abused stuff.
I read about a Kleine Fogelman airfoil which increases lift, I'll find the link.
My brother has cad or he's going to reinstall cad, so if anybody has the cad plans then he can load them for me.
Mesage me and I'll give you my email tosend the file.
I got a camera that I carry always so I'll post alot of pics since I've been getting amped on this project,
which is all I can think about so I want to get it done !

So if anybody is still looking.
You cut out the 4 channels above the black line I drew in (sorry for the crummy paint job)
below or split the line, 2 above 2 below?

spaceworm 12-12-2010 03:08 PM

RE: Ultra Spad Stik 4 mil wing?
Yes, I am still looking. But, I seem to have missed something. It looks like you are using the 4 mil with the flutes spanwise. And you are cutting the flutes at the leading edge so you can form the leading edge round. Your question is whether the cut flutes are above or below or split at the leading edge centerline? I think if the wing is flat bottom, the flutes would be cut above the LE centerline, or maybe one below and the rest above. Fof a symmetrical wing. cut equal above and below. Just the way I would do it. I may have to try it soon after the holidays. good luck.

Regards for a happy hobbyday.

RE: Ultra Spad Stik 4 mil wing?
To form the leading edge of the horizizontal stabilizer. It is to fold over to form the leading edge of the horizontal stabilizer.
In the ultraspadstik krautious opus instructions it says to cut 4 flutes not all the way through, just I guess his
terminology is score, then it will fold over, so rather than have to cut a piece of 4 mill I'm running low,
so I can't afford to cut a sample piece out otherwise I would.

What you lack in building material you make up for in fabricating and welding skill. Awesome work. How are you using the 4 mil for the wing? I thought you were cutting the leading edge flutes to allow the 4 mil to fold over the LE radius. Re the scoring vs cutting. I think he is actually cutting one side of the flute to allow it to fold. In the SPAD notes, there is a tool made from two hook cutters spaced the distance between the flute sides that is used to cut the facing web away. Keep up the really good work.

I'm still watching too Joel! :)  I've just never build an Ultrastick so I'm not much help!  LOL  It's looking good.  I see you're down farm country way so I know you've got plenty of great flying space down there.

RE: Ultra Spad Stik 4 mil wing?
I'm the original dumpster divin junkyard dawg !
Thanks for the encouraging replies.
Want to thank Carl Spano so far, swapped for a Quadra 42.
He's helped tremendously over the
last few days with 30 years modeling experience,
he has given me a book full of tips and how to make the dwindling dollar count !
Reagan at Coroplast says she will send some 2 mil.

I'm having to be careful, made some quick cuts in haste not big mistakes but I
can see I'm making measurement errors that are hurting as the build progresses.
Spaceworm, I keep rereading the horizontal stab page and just can't figure where to cut the 4 flutes he's
talking about cutting, where it folds over. I should have added an extra inch or 2 but didn't, I
went exactly the 30 x 24. So I need to be sure I do the cutting on the correct 4 flutes.
I was thinking 2 above where I painted the black line and 2 below, but without a piece to fold I don't know.

It's not long enough but I can figure the fold line,
and it looks like the middle flute and 1 on each side will make a nice
leading edge.
Edit: Removed 2 and middle flute just the top looking down like half an i=beam and the leading edge is
real nice, pics later today.

RE: Ultra Spad Stik 4 mil wing?
One thing I've learned about SPADs is where you cut or fold is not really critical.  As long as you get things close and they're solid it'll be ok.  As long as your wing surface or your stab surfaces are about the same overall area, if you're off a couple flutes on a fold it's not going to kill the build.  I hear ya about the dumpster diving....  I pretty much just follow spadtothebone.com but it amazes some of the guys at my field what my planes are made of.  One of the guys calls me McGyver.  LOL

RE: Ultra Spad Stik 4 mil wing?
Ok tryiing to plunge ahead here.
Anybody that can help out, i've been scanning for servos, prop, servo horns.
Tentatively got 2 Futaba s3010's from on here.
If those fall through I need a good price on a servo for the rudder, trying to use 1 higher torque there.
Have a couple of Futaba S9202 one each on eleavator.then a
S148 on each aileron.
Throtlle another 9202.
Still short a good servo and a backup one.
Need a 16x8 prop that's what Kraut used, and he's not on rcuniverse any more.
So empty your scrap boxes and see if you got some odds and ends, I would
be grateful. !

Wheels needed too ! got pink baby buggy tires I can use in a pinch. Shaft 1/4 inch. Tail have 3/32 stainless tig wire
to make rear steering wheel, Don't have a work around for that so far.

Oh, also can I use a nitro gas tank with regular fuel?
Got one that'll fit good leftover.
If not advice needed !

spaceworm 12-15-2010 09:31 AM

RE: Ultra Spad Stik 4 mil wing?
You will need to change the stopper from the tank to one made for gasoline. The one in the nitro tank will be destroyed by gas. You can get the stopper made for gas at any hobby store or Tower for less than $4.00. If I had an extra one, I would send it to you. HiTec servos are good value for the money. Again, if I had any extra they would be yours. Sorry.

Happy Hobbydays.

Sincerely, Richard
