Default Czech Mate / Perestroika

Thought I would start a thread to document the construction of a couple of Yak warbird racers that I and my good friend Robert Vogel have teamed up to build. We are dedicated to going fast but also enjoy having a model which is at least moderately faithful to the full size in outline and shape. We have stretched the wing a bit in order to achieve the desired wing area without ending up with a 1/5 scale airplane but otherwise they are quite scale. The full size is a highly modified Yak-11 which began its' career with Bob Yancey way back in the '80s and continues to race at Reno with current owner Sherman Smoot. My model will represent the airplane as it appeared when owned by Bob Yancey and called "Perestroika".

Robert will be duplicating a later incarnation of the airplane with the name "Czech Mate" and a few more airframe mods including a much larger vertical fin and rudder.

We decided to split up the framing chores so Robert produced the wings while I did the fuselages. Now that both aircraft are framed we will each continue with our own respective models. As I need to finish up a couple of other projects first, to include getting a cowl plug produced so we can make a couple of glass cowls, my progress will probably be slow for a bit. However, if history is any indication, Robert will probably make pretty rapid work of the build. I hope so anyway as I can't wait to see if this thing is going to fly!

The design work was done in CAD and the parts laser cut. Plans and parts MIGHT be available at some point if the airplane flies well. Span is 66 inches which yields a wing area of around 750 square inches. We are hoping to keep the weight to 9 pounds or less. I will start out with a OS 1.20AX in my bird as I'm not to concerned at this point with being a gold contender. I think Robert has plans for either a massaged YS 1.40 or possibly and electric set up.

Here is my airframe with the vertical fin borrowed off of Robert's bird. My fin and rudder will be different to reflect the stock unit of "Perestroika".

Robert's airframe is just a bit further along.

Hi Chad,

You might want to get in touch with either John Krohn or Kent McKenna regarding Perestroika. They campaigned a giant scale r/c unlimited version and may have some insights as to how it flys. Should you ever decide to offer plans or a kit please let me know as I am interested in a sport flying version of this plane.

Best Regards
Carlos G.

Thanks for the information Carlos. I have every confidence that the airplane will fly quite nicely. Particularly so if we can keep the weight down. I am working on a third airframe (slowly) which will be for sport/scale flying and will include flaps which are quite simple on the Yak-11. This third airframe will have a different cowl and canopy as we plan to replicate "Night Witch" as seen below. This same general cowl and canopy arrangement has been used on at least half a dozen different airframes and opens up a number of potential scale paint jobs. If the airplane flies well I will most likely offer plans and parts for this version as well as the Czech Mate/Perestroika. Thanks for checking in and updates will be coming soon I hope.

Updates from Robert. Oh yeah!

Robert went the extra mile on this one with internal linkages to the tail. Even the rudder pull-pull is almost entirely concealed. Very clean and neat. The tail wheel is still a work in progress.

Span is 66 inches Tim. That is a bit mis-leading though as I stretched the wing out a bit to get more area. Still a pretty large airplane by warbird racing standards but not as big as it sounds.

Hi Carlos,

Robert's Yak seen above is now pretty much ready to cover. He has taken some time off of this project to wedge a YS .91 into an E-Flite P-51B for a back-up airplane but should be back to the Yak very soon. I completed the plug for the cowl and the guy doing the mold has been a bit busy and has not finished it yet. I was told it might be done today. With any luck I should have some new pictures of the airplane in the next week or so. Stay tuned...

Have not made any progress on my airplane Tim, too many other projects that have to be finished first. I'm not sure where Robert is on his. I do know that his workship is in his garage which is not air conditioned and so all building pretty much comes to a stand still from June through to September at least. I should talk to him in the next few days and will inquire as to the status of the Yak. If he has managed to get it covered I may go over and shoot some more pics.

Well, we are finally starting to experience a bit of a break in the extreme heat so Robert has been able to get back out to the garage and make some progress. This thing is going to be awesome! Looks like the all up weight is going to be right at 9 pounds which is exactly what we were shooting for. With a "massaged" YS 1.40 up front it will undoubtedly "haul the mail" in fine fashion.

Hey Chad,
Heres my version. 47" wing at 406 sq's and 43 1/4" long. Powered by a YS .70 and hoping weight to be 4 1/2 to 5 lbs

Thanks for the kind words gents, much appreciated. Tim, your little "Czech Mate" looks good. Ours is 66" span with about 750 square inches and should be about 9 pounds. We needed enough wing area to allow for the big YS plus I wanted an airplane large and light enough to be a solid sport flyer. We will see if those goals were acheived very soon I hope.

That one is nice but I prefer the all blue wing to the silver/blue stripes. Actually, I prefer the lime green which is why my airplane will be finished as "Perestroika".

Have you all seen the newly rebuilt Sea Fury "Furias"? The new owner has gone all the way and turned this R-4360 powered monster into a fully race modified airframe. The new paint job has been revealed as well and I think it is awesome. I'm thinking there may be a Sea Fury warbird racer in my future!

Damn! You think along the same lines as me. I was going to catch up with my bud Brian Sanders and go to his hanger to get some specs on Dreadnaught. This is so cool Chad....

Hi chad,

Here is a link of the Yak we campaigned at Madera.

It had an Aerrow 200cc modified race engine and it was very fast...

Let me know if you are going to run the OS120AX. I have used this engine on planes to go fast with. best so far is 143-144 on gps.

I can help you with prop selection and so on.

Hi Carlos,

I seem to recall seeing pictures of your big racing Yak in a magazine or two many years ago. Nice bird, is it still around?

Airraptor,

I'm definitely going to be running the 1.20 in my bird although I have yet to decide if I will race it or not. I've got a couple of other projects to finish up first but I hope to be back to work on my "Perestroika" in the near future. I would gladly accept your input regarding the best set up for the 1.20 when the time comes.
