Got her all blocked out and although she wasn't perfect I decided she was close enough to move on to color. As she sits now the base color is on along with some graphics. So far I am happy with the results. Going to do some more detail work before the clear. Sorry no pictures, just more of a teaser until next week.

Shawn,
As usual, your fiberglass work and paint look top-notch. (We are always our own worst critics.) Best of luck with your maiden.
Jim Sweeney's older P-47 was a bit of a handful during my maiden with it last Sunday. Adding flaps tamed the landing a little, but now the flight characteristics are off. The handling is just too wonky for me to feel comfortable racing it with so little time to work things out and practice. I'll make further adjustments and try again, weather permitting; but I'm not having a "warm, fuzzy" about the chances of feeling comfortable with it in time for the race, right now. He also assembled an old Kyosho Bf109 ARF part way for me, and I'm going to try to get that finished up, too. Its not pretty, but if I am lucky, I might get it done in time to see you on Sunday, and try to maiden it, as well. Yet again, I find myself trying to throw something together at the last minute to get out there. I look forward to seeing you, the "Macchi 5", and hopefully the rest of the family.

Thanks Ollie, this time I put finished weight in front of having a perfect paint job. Finished weight is 6 lb 6 oz. I will be starting another one soon. I hope you do get something together, yes racing is fun but it just wouldn't be the same without the whole group. If you can tell me what the P-47 is doing maybe together we may have enough ideas to get it sorted. Looking forward to seeing you and the crew. No kids this trip as we will be hauling stuff back to SJ that we had stored in Folsom.

It was a very exciting day to say the least. First off I have to say that although I had resisted moving to a 4 stroke for a few years the YS 115 fired right up and performed flawless all day. Got in 3 flights each one getting better and faster. The only things that need some work is is removing some of the weight I added to move the CG back as I went a touch too far. I also need to investigate the LiFe RX battery as after 1 flight it was reading 6.5V without load. Overall very happy and looking forward to it getting better as the engine breaks in and I get the airframe dialed in. I wanted to also thank everyone who supported and encouraged me during the build. This was a tough one as it was built during two moves. More people then I can mention came through not only supporting me and my Trixie in regards to the build but gave unmeasurable amounts of emotional support. The words "Thank You " seem to fall woefully short.

I really enjoyed following your build, Shawn. And it was a pleasure for me watching you finally come to the YS "dark side", and seemingly LIKE IT -- as well as to watch the Macchi 5 take to the sky. She looked even better than in the photos. I loved the pearlescent effect in your clear coat -- that was a nice touch. Sorry we didn't get to talk more, but it was great to see you and Virginia again.
I look forward to meeting up with you again in a couple of weeks, as well as to the second installation of the build thread, when you build a second one for Ali. That one will just have a YS 70 in it though, right?

Awesome,
So Glad to hear it went well and you are happy. The YS engines are actually easy to set once you find the position, then read the plug after each flight to verify.
I run the little Zippy life batteries and even some of the Hobbico life ones and have no issues with either.

Marty, what capacity pack and what voltage do you see after 1 flight. I was charging the pack after each flight and putting between 75 to 80 ma back into the pack so I'm sure that 800 ma is plenty capacity but that drop to 6.5V no load and with load it was dropping to 6 V. Im going to pull it out and see what the individual cells are reading. But everything went well got a couple items to change before she goes out again.

Was the battery under load when you did the test? Under load my LiFE batteries will show 6.5 volts or so after a flight. On Sunday my plane with the GPS sensor was reporting just under 6.6 while on after flight (while resting). I tested my 1700 pack after first flight and received a reading below 6.6 with everything off and no load so I charged (since I was playing with the GPS and had the plane on for quite awhile), but didn't keep track of the MAH that "restocked" the battery. I flew a second time under the same conditions and then packed up. I can charge at home and note the MAH's and report back if it helps tonight. Usually during races I tend to recharge my LiFE batteries and see about 100-150 MAH needed to recharge after a heat. As a side note, I have modified my LiFe battery balance plugs so that I can use a charge port on the side of my plane along with a JR charge switch. This allows me to read voltage through the balance plug and recharge the battery as well without having to take the plane apart and access the wires for the battery.
